Well that was no fun

Last week I wasn't feeling up to snuff, so each day after work I just kicked back on the couch and watched TV.

On Sunday afternoon my left arm went numb and was accompanied with some chest pain, so I hightailed it over to the ER. They did preliminary tests and while most looked OK, they saw something odd in the EKG so I was admitted to the hospital. The rest of Sunday (and all thru the night) consisted of blood tests every 3 hours. Between that and the 2 am admission for the other bed in the room, I didn't get any sleep.

Monday started bright and early with a bunch of tests, which consisted mostly of sitting in the hall in a wheelchair and waiting. First wait is that in order to take some pictures of the heart they have to inject you with a solution and let it circulate for at least an hour. Then I had a stress test, which must be done with the doctor present, so we sat around 30-40 minutes waiting for him to show up. After that came a followup picture of the heart, which required another injection and the associated hour wait.

Tests all came back OK, so a neurologist came to see me. He did a once over and said it looked like it was a pinched nerve and scheduled me for an MRI to make sure it wasn't anything else. It was scheduled for the morning, but the last slot of the day freed up so they wheeled me over for it sometime after 9 pm. On the way over the nurse said the MRI should take about 30 minutes or so. Then the tech said it'd be about 45 minutes, but after I was strapped in place he goes "oh, your doctor ordered an extra test so you'll be in for at least an hour". What fun. The MRI was quite noisy, but had an interesting sound to it - it kinda reminded me of Industry (2.5 MB - mod file plus AAC conversion), one of my favorite Amiga Mods by Deathjester.

I thought for sure I'd sleep Monday night as they weren't having to draw blood anymore, but the guy in the other bed starting having major problems. Alarms kept going off throughout the night causing the nurse to come running in, so I was constantly being jarred back awake. At one point they asked about his living will, so his prognosis must not have been very good.

The MRI didn't turn up anything life threatening, so I was released Tuesday morning. I was already scheduled to see my doctor next week for a routine checkup, so I informed his office of the incident so they could request copies of all the lab results.

I've spent the past couple of days recouping from the lack of sleep and hope to get back to work on Frantic next week.

I thought I put that in there, but guess I didn't - the arm numbness and chest pains are both gone.

I'm still very tired though, probably a few more days to recoup from lack of sleep.

I was in hospital for 4 days last autumn. And I was under the impression that they sometimes(?) really do their best, to make you even more sick. Little sleep, bad food, non-working TVs...

They checked for that, wasn't a stroke.

I eat a lot of fish and veggies, I've lost 30 pounds by doing a modified version of the Atkins diet. Lunch yesterday was green salad, salmon and cooked spinach. Dinner was a huge bowl of gazpacho soup with a little bit of meat and cheese on the side.

I love rice (sushi, asian foods, etc) so I knew I couldn't do a strict Atkins diet. When I started I was at 200 pounds, so I set my initial target weight at 199. I step on the scale every morning after I get out of the shower (so there isn't any variation due to cloths). If I'm at or below my target I have a Whatever-I-Want day, otherwise it's a low carb day. I usually get WIW twice a week (occasionally it's once or thrice). Every couple weeks I dropped the target by 1 pound. I did this until I got to 170 and have left the target there for the past 9 months, though lately I've been debating dropping another 5 or even 10 pounds.

My doctor was skeptical when I started eating this way, but he isn't anymore - I no longer take cholesterol medication and my blood pressure medication is at a lower dosage.
