I brought it from Ebay for $15.50. The Ebay description as shown...
Sega Game Gear System Parts/Repair Powers Up
Description: The item up for sale is:
A Sega Game Gear system for parts or repair. The system does work and play games, but the screen is dim and it is missing a battery cover. The system also has scratches on the console. No batteries are included.
All I needed is a Game Gear that can power up, that's it.
It came in today. I opened the box and found there's a Gamegear inside. Thanks goodness that my mail person didn't crush the box, there's hardly any packing in there. It didn't need any since handheld from back then can survive a bomb explosion. Plus Lynx and Gameboy both has a battle scars but still works. PSP also has battle scar, but still works. Wait, what was my point again? Nevermind.
I set it on the dining room table and started my day.
Then later, I inspected it. There's battery cover missing, no big deal. I removed the battery cover and there were batteries in that one. Too bad I 5 star'd that seller before I reread his description. I don't know the condition of the batteries, but I'll check it with my Wii-mote and see how much charge it has left. There's a fuzzy stuff in one of the screw hole.
Now opening this thing. I had the screw bit to unscrew that security screw. I couldn't find it since it was in that glass cup that was on the shelf. Since that glass cup wasn't there, I guess it doesn't exist anymore. I just got the small screw flat head screwdriver and successfully unscrewed that security bit off. Thanks goodness!!! Later, I threw that screw in the garbage where it belongs. Then I unscrew the rest. I opened the Game Gear. I immediately disconnect the connecters to the sound and power board and set that cover aside. I used my broken Game Gear cover instead since that one already has good set of batteries installed and I know the sound board works properly. Connected the connectors to its ends.
I put in Sonic cartridge in the slot and switched the power on to see if it powers on like Ebay seller said. The screen looks like there's Vaseline thrown on it. There's only vertical lines shown while there's several horizontal lines that is about 1-5 pixel thick. The sound and speaker works fine. So, that power got turned off by me and then inspection begins.
I spot the obvious capacitor that has leaked right near the RAM/processor chip. I took it off by attempted to cut it and shortly use the soldering iron on it for a few seconds. Took the cap from GG1 and transfer it to this spot. Solder it in. Turn on the screen, nope didn't fix it. Inspection begins once again. Spotted another caps that has leaked, it was right of the CFT light. I replaced that one. Tested the Game Gear, but that didn't fix it. Spot one that is on the left-bottom corner. I twisted it off instead of desoldering it. Solder the capacitor there. Turned on the system once again.
This time, I turned up the brightness. I see Sonic wagging his finger at the title screen! Oh shit I can't believe that fixed it!!! Yay!!!
Even though I know the other caps needs to be replace. I close it up and went upstairs to attempt to beat Ristar once it for all.
The bosses in Ristar are not easy. I started at stage 4 because I am unsure if the rechargeable batteries would last a full game and I need to accumulate 1up to increase my chance to beat the boss. There are continues, but it gives 2 lives to start with and begins you at the first segment. It took me 2 runs from stage 4 to beat that final boss. Before, it took me about 10-12 runs to try to beat the final boss.
I keep wondering if there's a fuse on the Game Gear... What's that green cylinder right near the sound wire connector.
I will attempt to do LED mod on this one later.
