I listened to the podcast and I wonder why you get that much of a lag when recording video. My pc is very old and slow and I had no such issue, perhaps on games that run on 50fps there might be a couple of miliseconds of delay but nothing major. I used dscaler for the recording and then post processed it with virtual dub (that was the slow part) and I didn't really try too much for quality (composite didn't help much anyway). I've moved over to linux now and I haven't tested what I can do.

Hey, thanks for listening!

What kind of capture device are you using exactly? It could be that mine is an external/USB capture device. But yes, it does cause a good bit of delay. For puzzle games and RPGs, it's not a big deal and is generally easier to record straight into it without a splitter, but for action games that require split-second timing, it's a no go for me. The delay kills it. This is how it generally works for people I have talked to who use USB devices and go through composite or S-Video (I'm not sure how well the ones that take RF work).

It's an easycap DC60 usb 2.0 and I use a composite cable. In all the videos I took, I had noticeable lag at only one game and that was due to the software used.

With DScaler I didn't feel any lag. My pc is a mere p4 hyperthreading at 3 GHz and all with IDE disks. Why don't you give it a shot with Dscaler? It could help with giving you less hassle in setting it up. (of course post processing the interlaced video is time consuming, about 2x the length of the video on my pc).

Hey, I didn't see this comment. I will look into this Easy cap you use. Overall I like my ION USB capture device, and now that I've got a video amplifier I can play the game on my TV as opposed to the small cropped area in the capture program on my PC. Still, I will check this out. My box isn't perfect by any means, as some systems occasionally "blink" during recording, giving me blank frames I have to chop out of in my more serious reviews (which is a pain in the ass). It wouldn't hurt to have alternatives and use different boxes for different systems (not a lot of hassle as they are USB).
