C64 Graftgold
Hi there!

So, after 2 brainchilds from Steve Turner, we now get to see Andrew Braybrooks last C64 title:

Intensity

Ratings:
Zzap! Rating: 75%
Lemon64: 7.4

Staff: Steve Turner (music) Andrew Braybrook (everything else)

Overview:
In 1988 this must've been really something special: An action game, with neither scrolling nor shooting!
In Intensity your mission is to rescue a couple of space colonists from platforms attacked by Aliens. For this you are controlling 2 vehicles at once, one that is collecting the colonists and one that is directing and guarding the collector.
You can destroy attacking Aliens simply by ramming them, so you're main job is buzzing up and down the screen getting rid of them. With the Fire Button, you call the "Drone" (I think that's how it's called) to collect any nearby colonists.

Fun in 2006:
Well, it is playable, it has sort of an oldschool Arcade feel, yet it didn't manage to capture my attention for longer than an hour. It get's hectic very quickly and even though it has elements like buying different ships and enemy alien mutating sequences, it still feels terribly thin. Mostly you're just zipping around like a big erazor :)

Intensity compared to previous Graftgold titles:
Obviously it has "that" look again - it just looks all like a stationary version of Uridium. I think the drone concept was a part of Morpheus already, and the Alien mutations seem to be continued ideas Andrew already presented in Gribbly.

Greetings,
Manuel

The graphics are definitely just recycling Uridium. Was it a budget game?

I don't think it was planned as one, else BT would have released it on the Silverbird label straight away instead of putting it out on Firebird. Yet, I remember buying Intensity and Soldier of Fortune (and other Firebird releases of those late C64 days like Savage) soon after they came out for 10.- DM each. I think it was the time when everyone switched to Amigas and so C64 games sales were very low already, forcing publishers to lower the price quickly. (Actually I think I switched to an Amiga as well at the time, since while I remember buying Intensity and SoF, I don't remember playing 'em :ponder:)

But you're totally right, Intensity feels very much like a low budget title. I always thought it was quite similar to a real low budget production, Motos from Mastertronic if you remember that per chance.
