Playing Batman (C64)

Hi there!

Great memories. Tim Burtons first Batman movie absolutely ruled my teenage world in 1989:

I actually remember riding 10 kilometers with the bike to the nearest cinema to see it. Not only was it the best movie ever made (well - at the time! ;)) with a great cast (okay, Keaton was questionable, but Nicholson and Kim Basinger were great) it also had a fabulous soundtrack from one of the greatest musicians of our time!

But while I had almost every merchandise available, strangely enough I never bought the game. It seems the considerably low 59% rating in issue 12/89 of Power Play made even me shy away from it. Actually... come to think of it... I may have played a pirate Miggy version of the game, albeit as far as I remember did it have 3D driving scenes, whereas the C64 version I picked tonight had them sideways in 2D.

This C64 version is more or less the typical Ocean movie game job, i.e. they usually just turned a couple of scenes from the movie into some kind of themed mini game collection. One of the few times this resulted in a good package was Oceans Platoon game and so I was optimistic to hear that Batman was made by the same people. (Who also did Typhoon BTW)

The driving intermezzos aside, the main portion of the game plays a lot like Sunsofts gameboy and console Batman games: Jumping and climbing over platforms, our hero throws his never ending arsenal of Batarangs to knock out Jokers also never ending arsenal of thugs while trying to reach the exit.

As expected from Oceans C64 experts, the game is technically flawless with above average graphics and music. The playability is also there, so if anything I'd complain that the game is pretty short with just five levels - I beat them in less than 2 hours. Of course, the Joker's got the last laugh:

Some future day the Playing series may see its sequel "Batman Returns", but first it'll continue with something else.

Greetings,
Manuel

We'll have to disagree on the merits of Tim Burton's Batman. I always felt it was one of the worst movies I'd ever seen.

The trick is to decide that you're going to like it no matter what - before actually watching it! :D
