Playing Champions of Krynn (Amiga)

Hi there!

Red Areemers are called Draconians in the Dragonlance universe:

After all the rather so-so games lately, it's been about time to spend some higher quality gaming time once again. Of course another AD&D game is always welcome in my house, especially one that dives into a new scenario: After three "Forgotten Realms" games SSI finally showed the Dragonlance universe some love!

Before it actually turned into fun, Champions of Krynn required some work. First thing was to decide on which platform to play it, but after the only DOS version I found had CGA graphics :o, choosing the Amiga version was a must. Next I struggled some with character generation, until I threw all my perfectionist habits over board and just whacked a somewhat competent party together in approx. half an hour. I hate it when there's no ready-to-go party residing on the game disk... :ponder:

The game itself so far is pretty much the same as SSI's last effort I played, Curse of the Azure Bonds. There's a couple of minor tweaks made for the Dragonlance scenario like having Kenders available as a race and the power of magicians is now influenced by Krynns blue, red and white moons, but other than that it's totally the same game system, plus a new story.

That story has been fine so far, engaging and entertaining. One oddity was when Caramon has been part of it as a NPC character, which felt a bit silly since I certainly also had my own Caramon created for my party. Let's wait and see if we meet some Raistlin impersonator along the way as well :lolblue:

The first two dungeon levels were fun and with my party members now already being level 5 characters, I'm really looking forward to fight some more dragons tomorrow! :)

Greetings,
Manuel

So, after a day off (my wife insisted in watching Star Trek V yesterday), I made it through yet another dungeon tonight.

Unfortunately not much more to report, it's been just a standard AD&D dungeon without any surprises. Let's hope that keep I just reached proves more interesting! :)

Star Trek VI got in the way yesterday, but tonight I managed to play through an entire dungeon, the keep I mentioned. I somehow start to get quite bored playing this game. I can't even tell exactly why. Most likely I've just seen one Goldbox game too many by now. It's just always the same, over and over again. Makes you really wonder how SSI got away with basically selling the same game nine times in a row :lolblue:

Meh, after another day off I lost interest during the next dungeon. Halfway through it there's a point where it is required to have a knight in the party to pass through. I just couldn't force myself to go all the way back, create a beginners level knight and then try the dungeon again. I'm currently debating with myself whether I should better skip a couple of the upcoming AD&D titles, hoping for one that shakes up the formula some more ;)

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see its sequel "Dark Knights of Krynn", but first it'll continue with something else.
