Marble Solitaire Update

Posted by , 01 September 2005 · 17 views

If you've been browsing the homebrew forum, you have probably seen the Marble Solitaire game I've been putting together for the 2005 Minigame Competition. http://www.atariage....showtopic=75152Since the original annoucement, I have been able to include some basic sound effects, and more than doubled the number of puzzles. Currently, I am looking for more puzzles to include in the final version. They are not hard to find, indeed the problem is actually narrowing them down. I've recently been focusing on combinations that are symmetrical both horizontally and vertically. There are 4096 of them, and I've been running a program all day to determine which ones have solutions. Here is just a sample of potential puzzles uncovered so far...
   -0-      ---      -0-       ---   000      0-0      000       -0- -00000-  0000000  -00-00-   ---0--- -------  -0---0-  -0---0-   00---00 -00000-  0000000  -00-00-   ---0---   000      0-0      000       -0-    -0-      ---      -0-       ---    -0-      0-0      ---       ---   0-0      000      000       000 -00000-  -0-0-0-  00---00   --000-- 00---00  --0-0--  -00-00-   --0-0-- -00000-  -0-0-0-  00---00   --000--   0-0      000      000       000     -0-      0-0      ---       ---
I'm considering holding a poll to help select puzzles. There are so many to choose from, I'll have to check if I can allow people to vote for multiple entries. Once I settle on the final puzzles, I will be just about ready to submit the game for the competition.

Hi there!

Just from looking at them, I'd like to play 1,2,5,6,7 :)

Greetings,

I've always liked this puzzle game. Looks good! :)

Well, my program has uncovered 1249 solvable combinations with horizontal and vertical symmetry. Most of these combinations have counterparts that are congruent, but rotated 90°, for example:

   -0-      000
   000      000
 0000000  -00000-
 000-000  000-000
 0000000  -00000-
   000      000
   -0-      000
So the actual number of puzzles uncovered is actually about half of 1249.

Now I'll give my computer a well-deserved rest, and next week will search for puzzles with 90° rotational symmtery as in the following:

   ---
   00-
 --0-00-
 -0-0-0-
 -00-0--
   -00
   ---

After that search is complete, I will begin the unenviable task of selecting a tiny fraction of the available puzzles to go into the final set.
