I replayed Fable 3 after many years away from it and got a bad ending because I forgot that time went by so quickly when doing the stuff in the throne room. I started a new game and had over 9 million dollars in the treasury and got a good ending, but this time I'm stuck on the Witchcraft Mary thing with two hobbes slapping each other and another one standing in front of a machine. I tried things like leaving the cave and deleting Traitor's Keep, but nothing works. Related links:

    • The other difference not mentioned is that with the PS3/360/Wii era, consoles came stock with wireless controllers from 2006 onward (except the 2005 launch 360) while the PS2/GameCube/Xbox were still wired unless you bought accessories.   And while the Wii didn't have stock HDMI, it did at least support widescreen for play on modern TVs.
    • Well, I got everything I was supposed to then. Thanks.   It's a really strange decision though. You'd think that they'd want it to be ready to go right out of the package. I mean, they provided the USB-C power cable, just no power brick. While I'm sure there are lots of people with extras lying around the house, I'm sure there are just as many without them.
    • Oh I don't know if Shoot 'em up is the best way to get used to retro dev, because it's not such an obvious genre, but it requires much less work compared to other genres.
    • It has to be added that the relocatable loader there is not, strictly speaking, limited to "peripheral handlers", it can be used to load arbitrary binaries in this format from arbitrary storage. IIRC the OS defines a vector where you can store an address of your "get byte" routine and the loader will use it. @trub experimented with that years ago. The trouble here is that no assembler can generate files in this format, and there is no official entry point in the jump table to run the loader (thus e.g. Rapidus OS defines this entry point to be at $E483).
    • Just curious but has anyone ever attempted making a Myst style homebrew game? I recently played through the Saturn game Lunacy and its like Myst but I noticed the in game mechanics are so simple its almost like an interactive movie. It was lots of fun and I think the genre has a lot of untapped potential.
    • One question I wondered was about the “debug” file in this update. Is that necessary to run the update or does it just helps developers figure out how to improve it. I ran it not knowing and I get those little codes up top.
    • The Peripheral Handler Loader allows devices on the SIO bus to send their device handler to the computer either automatically (type 3 poll) or on demand (type 4 poll). For instance, you could plug in a device, and have its Q: device automatically install on boot directly from the device. It supports a relocatable format, so handlers can load at any address in memory. While this sounds useful, there are a few problems: They aren't supported by 400/800 computers. Relocatable handlers load at MEMLO. There is not often much space available there before MEMLO rises too high to run programs, since standard DOS executables are not relocatable. It would have been more useful to relocate handlers high instead of low, except for the complications with screen memory. Type 3 polls are mildly useful as they can be used to autorun code after DOS boots, but type 4 polls are useless because they only work if the application leaves memory free at MEMLO and tells CIO that it supports loadable handlers. Which none do. And, last but not least... there are precisely zero devices known to have ever shipped with relocatable handler support. Thus, the peripheral handler loader is pretty much a waste of ~400 bytes in the low OS ROM. Whether the Help Text Viewer is a better use of that space is a different question....
    • Many thanks for this very detailed description🤙   Just to add, never use the same PC to update Evercade devices and if you did, remove its driver first.   Also use the delivered USB cable, as many others are good for charging but do not transfer any data.
    • There was a point when we'd have been asking at what point does the software emulation fad run out? After all, original hardware is cheap and easy to get...   FPGA is not a "fad". There was a time when I might have thought it was, but the MiSTER changed that, and then we got a bunch of other relatively cheap FPGA-based stuff afterwards. And it has clear advantages over software emulation. I, like many other people, think it's worth paying a little bit of a premium for an FPGA-based machine vs. something like the "NES on a chip" machines that were all the rage a few years ago.   I'll always be more of an original hardware guy, but I dabble in software emulation and I'll probably dabble in FPGA's as they continue to come down in price. FPGA's IMO have a permanent place in retro gaming.
