Not a spokesman, but my new X-Arcade Tankstick Max with the added spinners is pretty great.  Though nowadays a lot pricier than it used to be.  I think I got my first one for something like $120 during a sale.

Since joining this forum, I think it's set me off on a kind of mid-life crisis...
First I purchased an Atari 2600+ and recently a NEO-GEO CD.

This little guy has become my favorite bird, the Great Grey Shrike

It hunts small rodents and birds. Sometimes it hunts them more than it needs to eat and so it leaves the carcasses hanging in spikes and thorns for later consumption. So if you notice impaled rodents in bunches, you have found the Shrike's larder. No surprise that the bird's latin name Lanius excubitor means sentinel butcher. It also wears a black robber's mask like a badass.

As a bonus, it shares a name with my favorite scifi monster, Shrike from the Hyperion/Endymion books. A 3-meter tall time-jumping, metallic, spiked entity and quite a butcher in itself.

I'm an old former multi-facetted Systems Analyst, PC Software/Hardware Technician, Network Manager & IT Manager who was paid to do what I loved doing. Unfortunately, in late 1999 I suffered a system crash and had to reconstruct and repurpose myself into other lines of work.

However, I've kept my interest in computers all this time and, quite frankly, enjoy mucking around without any pressure. Now the 3 of us (me, myself and I), are very happy - although it does occasionally get a bit crowded and noisy in here.

    • For clarity, the 800 'Personality card' (front slot) had the 10K ROM OS & math chips. In the 400 these were on the motherboard (albeit socketed and therefore easily internally upgradeable).   Both 800 and 400 had a slot for a CPU board slot that was not externally accessible, bearing the 6502, ANTIC and CTIA/GTIA.   The 800 had 3 externally-accessible RAM slots, the rear one having additional lines that allowed some plug-in non-RAM expansions such as 80-column video.  The 400 had just 1 internally-accessible RAM slot.
    • >>Early 400 / 800 models had a CTIA chip.<<   I would change this to 'Very early US ...'   I think CTIA machines are a real rarity, not least because Atari offered a free upgrade to anyone with a CTIA machine.   CTIA machines never shipped to the UK (and, I presume, Europe) - by that time all machines were already GTIA.
    • I would advise against the Gekko and Akura. Reasons:   1. the image probably won't be centered properly 2. the cable is fragile and prone to erratic functionality 3. it doesn't scale anything, so your display will do the scaling, which may be good or may be terrible 4. it doesn't do anything with the Dreamcast's DTV signal, so if your display also does not, you'll end up with weird vertical lines on your screen where video information is missing   Get DCDigital or VGA box + OSSC or Retrotink, as those fix all of the above problems.
    • There's no additional delay for drawing the first copy of the player object. But it does look to me like the player is drawn at the moment the RESPx resolves, which shouldn't happen - the first copy is not drawn until the following scanline (unless the position is reset again in the interim). But without knowing what the rest of the TIA implementation is doing it's hard to diagnose exactly.   I've not heard of Jigo2600. I'll take a look at that.   But good luck in your coding. It sounds like a fun project and an implementation targeting a microcontroller would be good.
    • You know that scene from The Simpsons where Sideshow Bob keeps stepping on rakes? Yeah, I can totally relate to that. There was a big, big bug in the code that kept the interval between Byron draws at a constant rate, resulting in slightly weird behavior in game. Turns out I should have been using the original timer "intervalmax" to read stage behavior data, not "inmax" which I somehow included in the code. I mean, the compiler kept telling me I had a wasted variable. I was like, "Hey, shut up, I need that variable for timing," and it turns out that no, I really didn't. It was some OTHER variable, and it was a small wonder the code worked at all. I hate when that happens.   Here it is now in its fixed state. Buh, embarrassing. whackem_game.rom
    • I really have no idea, but I hope Blaze realize they could be alienating their customers if they announce yet another system after people just bought a new EXP or VS...
    • Yes my current code begins drawing objects immediately at the calculated horizontal clock (that is +5 or +4 related to the RESPx clock hit, plus all the weird calculations related to when it is hit), because that's what I've read from every document and source code I've seen. This is the first time I read that there are delays on the first copy and I'm still struggling to understand how this delay is handled in existing emulators, my current reference is javatari.js, I'll look at your source even tough I don't know much about Go.   I fear that fixing this thing in my current implementation is nearly impossible, too much code to add (running out of code space). I think that I need to take another approach to render the TIA graphics, I found this source https://github.com/jigo2600/jigo2600 that also have a very detailed description of the TIA internals, and being written in C++ maybe I can step though it more easily. This will take a loooong time, this is the 4th or 5th time I rewrite the TIA code and I'm a bit tired... the games I'm more interested in are working, I can live without Galaxian for now...   Thank you all for the help.
    • When I wrote a multitasking thing I had a scheduler, since I didn't want it to be up to the different tasks to decide who would run next. That decision was taken by the scheduler. When task switching was due it was because of a timer interrupt using the TMS 9901 timer. So the scheduler was called by an interrupt, which meant that the information to return to the very same task that was interrupted was in R13-R15 when the scheduler was called. These three registers I stored in the TIB (Task Information Block) for that task. Then I picked a similar set from the next TIB to be run, inserted into R13-R15 and did the common RTWP to return from the interrupt. But now I was of course returning to another task than the one that was interrupted. At program start, all TIB had their data block filled with data which would start the task from the first instruction with the proper workspace. So even at program start, the very first task would be called by a RTWP.   The scheduler managed a queue of tasks ready to run, where individual tasks could be inserted or removed, depending on the need at any specific moment. It's of course also possible to use priorities and/or create special event queues, like for tasks waiting for keyboard input, data to show on the screen or whatever it may be.
    • That’s how I went … I don’t think I have a single original for the NGCD, I gladly patched each and every one of them that either had cd or cdz protection, given none of my money would go to SNK or Visco or etc… anyway I did not feel bad one bit. For my top loader I went the neosdloader route http://furrtek.free.fr/sdloader/ and it’s so much faster … I even have a cdz (pity no neosdloader for that) but rarely if ever use it.  I also own an aes + neosd pro (https://terraonion.com/en/producto/neosd-pro-aes/ ) just because I could afford it way back when and it can alsoplay about half of the ngcd library in addition to all aes games thanks to razoola of unibios fame (http://unibios.free.fr/)   I mean if anyone is in retro gaming neogeo is a mandatory stop … MiSTer does a very good job at it btw, so that counts too.
    • I think it difficult to make a use case for BL/RTWP.  Not impossible.   For reducing the amount of memory used by a BLWP vector, you can embed the vector in registers like I did with CPUID:   CPUID DATA $-16 R8 location DATA CPUPC R9 location CPUPC BES 12 skip over R10-R15 R0 to R7 are not used by the routine.  R13, R14, and R15 are used normally.  R10, R11, R12 are free.   Many routines do not use all 16 registers.  Routines like VWTR, VSBR, VSBW, VMBR, VMBW.   Jeff White
