    • OLD CS1

The short story: Paramount releases "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" on DVD.  It was apparently mastered by a summer intern using off-the-shelf software, resulting in progressive scans of interlaced sources, not de-interlaced and shit quality.  Two of the discs in the set are unreadable so I resort to alternate methods of acquisition.  I find someone has run the DS9 set through an AI up-scaler to produce a 720p collection in fantastic quality!

Really, Paramount?  Would that have been so difficult for you to do and sell to us at the MSRP of $69.99?
      1. SpiceWare

You might want to pick up the original DVD sets of the individual seasons instead of the crappy complete series.  Doing that solved the ripping problems for me, plus the file size for each episode is 2x larger than from the complete series.  More info here:

      2. OLD CS1

@SpiceWare  Maybe the cheaper mastering is why the complete sets cost less than the individual seasons.  So damned annoying.  I have stayed away from buying individual seasons because I cannot guarantee I can get full sets and it is usually more expensive that way.

I did not have such good luck with "Futurama" or "Family Guy," as well as a couple of other series.  Even the individual seasons of these were encoded poorly.  Plus, the DVD-on-Demand stuff is just garbage, in my experience.  I make full rips of those because I expect the media to die any time.

      1. x=usr(1536)

In some ways, it's reminiscent of the arcade game Hunchback.  Not totally the same, but there are similarities.

Now that I think of it, I can't recall a version of Hunchback making it to the 2600, though just about every other platform from the time seemed to get one.  Hmm.
      2. Intellivision Master

There is a homebrew called Hunchy 2 for the 2600.  Also, there is a 2600 multi-cart with mini games on it.  One of the games is Hunchy. Both the homebrew and the multi-cart are in the AA store.

        Hunchy in the 2005 Mini-Game Multi-Cart

        @batari released the ROM here.
Hunchy is a 2k ROM that punches above it's weight IMO.  Good game!  There is also a hacked version here.

    • Hi, few weeks ago I bought a Atari 800XL (PAL) that has this video issue:     This has the feel of a video-processing issue on the (I presume) LCD screen you are displaying on.  Do you have another display you can try?  If not are there display menu options on your display that allow you to manipulate how video signals are processed?
    • The MegaMania commercial with The Tubes doing the music is peak 80's awesome.
    • A quick update. I have been testing the boards for shipment. I still need to do a little more testing - the boards have worked fine but I updated my testing procedure a little and found a couple more boards.   While I was at this, I also started to work on the StrangeCart firmware some more. I needed to review how I test the boards, which lead to reading the source code, which lead to working on the software...   I have added a couple of features, the more interesting of which I will discuss later when I am a bit further, but I think it is pretty interesting - well for me at least.   The smaller and less interesting new feature is a helper: during testing I couldn't immediately locate my serial to USB FTDI dongles. On searching I did find a few (I am sure I have more), but they were all connected to various projects and I didn't want to detach them. I was thinking I should not have this problem, since I literally have dozens of microcontroller boards, many of which I have designed and support both USB and serial interfaces. I got hit by the not invented here syndrome, so I added USB to serial conversion capability into the StrangeCart firmware.  For background information, I use the virtual serial port over USB connection to the StrangeCart all the time. For example, when I am testing the boards, I download BASIC programs to the flash memory of the StrangeCart using XMODEM over the USB serial port: dl_fs DIM.BAS xmodem receive to SPIFFS CCCCCCCCC xmodem return code: 128 The dl_fs command expects a filename and then XMODEM transmission, and the StrangeCart writes the received data to the flash chip. That enables me to see that things work properly with the flash chip. [In this case it was a very small BASIC program which can then either be loaded from TI Basic using "OLD SCD1.DIM.BAS" or directly loaded to the StrangeCart's own BASIC interpreter with "old DIM.BAS" on the StrangeCart serial console. Save SCD1.DIM.BAS also works for saving if there is another method of getting the BASIC program into the TI.]   I now added a new command usb2serial: usb2serial Entering USB to serial converter mode. Exit pressing S2 or S3.   After this, the StrangeCart will pipe data from the virtual USB port to a physical UART (there is a pin header on board, the serial port is a 3.3V port but I think it's 5V tolerant) and vice versa. Currently the settings are fixed to 115200, 8N1. The buttons S2 and S3 are buttons used to change cartridge images normally, but in this case pushing one of them will terminate the USB to serial conversion mode.   This is a small feature, but now I only need two StrangeCarts to test the UART pins on the boards
    • This is why I loved that era of gaming. Everyone could make a game. It also gave me some ideas for Robot Force stories. (The weirder, the better!)
    • Old-school video game commercials are as of a deal as the games they advertise to me; so I was wondering, what was your favourite Atari one??   For one there's Star Wars. The kid's reaction is hilarious, especially if you're a Gen Z like me who has access to advanced hardware like the Xbox One. He really feels like he's in the game. And there's his classic ending line: "SOME GAME!!" When I first played Star Wars Battle Pod at Dave & Buster's, I said that. (Funny thing is, the kid says "It's great in the arcade..." what do you think his first reaction to the arcade version was??) Helps I'm good at the Atari game (but not Battle Pod.)   Speaking of, there was The Fly, shown before Return of the Jedi. My dad showed this one to me when I was a kid along with a few other Atari commercials. How the guy gets inspired to make Yars Revenge just by seeing a fly in his room... and similar inspirations for more classic games. IIRC, the people behind Tron did this ad. Makes me wanna be a kid in the '80s (which is why I can be born in 1982 or even 1972 on the Web at times.)   Another memetic ad nowadays is Pole Position. The line "He's a corporate executive; he stops exciting things from happening!" alone is hilarious. (So HE was behind the cancelled Atari games!) And the awesome '80s music courtesy of MTV. Reminds me of Speed Racer combined with Death Race (both remade in 2008 too!) That ending is brutal; how can they still be alive with the car wreckage punctured thru them?? This ad sums up what the '80s were like.   Ice Hockey is funny, starring Phil Hartman before he was TOM 2000 or Jijii. How he builds up to the point where he yells "ICE HOCKEY BY ACTIVISION!!" Feels like an old-school SNL sketch.    Centipede was another MTV ad, and it's a doozy. It reminds me of kaiju flicks from the good ol' days and the ending with the guy becoming a centipede gives me ideas for a Robot Force story.   Any ads you'd like to mention??
    • Incredible news that  you can now get the classic remakes of Star Raiders and Yar Revenge for about 68 pence each.  MS are also touting more sales as the months click down.   Who would not jump at the chance of playing the finest Version of Star Raiders on 360 ( a wee bit of spin there as it is the only version.).  I bought it and it is okay.  Graphics are quite good and the sound is okay but the tune loops too frequently.   Plus the updated on rails shooter version of Yars revenge.  Neither are brilliant but they are not bc so they might be worth picking up.  68p for yars as well
    • honestly as someone who was TOO YOUNG to know anything at all, going off what everything looked like in 1983, my best guess for most of it is:   Saturation in the console market: This on its own isn't terrible, and for the most part i think it was alright, but Fairchild vs Atari 2600 vs Intellivision vs Colecovision vs Atari 5200 vs Odyssey 2 vs... just seemed a bit too crowded, especially compared to the home computers around the corner.   Saturation in the games market: What REALLY didn't help was the oversaturation in the games market, even if i personally think its alright if a third party makes their own unlicensed game for a system, the issue was Atari or basically any of the console companies at the time had any kind of "seal of quality" and if they were to have one, they were so Anti-Third Party that it would probably be for ONLY ATARI games or ONLY COLECO games and there wouldn't be a standard for third parties so any of them could copy eachothers stamps and still release shovelware onto the general public, not to mention the fact that not only did a few rivals to atari make 2600 adapters for their consoles THEY ALSO PUBLISHED GAMES ON 2600, and at best (and honestly, the most likely case) they wouldn't be intentionally bad but moreso the bar was set low for their rival systems ports, ya know marketing and all. But many third parties just threw whatever at the wall to see what stuck, the only form of control that kept some games more restricted was the most Adults Only type games being sold main in or from the counter with an ID, otherwise it wwas fairgame for what was sold to people, sure you could've gotten pitfall with your paper route money in the early 80's or you could've gotten porky's/tax avoiders, pac-man, ET, and speak of the devil...   Atari didnt give a shit about their employees: Even if the Tod Frye story about the "unfinished prototype" wasn't true, it seemed like Atari didn't give a turkey about at least giving Frye the help of porting the most anticipated port of the classic arcade game that he likely needed in order to release the game in time, and ET? Well a lot of us know that it's really just a good Adventure title held behind by it's strict deadline, think its bad now when games are released too early in a buggy state? At least you'll at least get a very "minor" post-launch series of patches over time because the studio realized their deadline was horribly short, well, with ET you might never see the fun adventure promised, least not for a handful of decades... i imagine if ET was given even just a couple more months, it might've been seen as a genre-defining title. But they NEEDED that sweet sweet Holiday '82 money! oh jeez oh and more on atari    Atari 5200 (mostly the controller): I do not wanna start a war with 5200 fans, i agree the console itself and its games library, while small is very underrated. the issue is how and when it was released. It was essentially the original idea for the 8-bit computers, a very powerful (for the late 70's)   successor to the VCS, but the way they finally executed it was terrible, The controller is the obvious issue, i will defend the fact that it was very much ahead of its time, with an analog stick and 3 menu buttons especially setting it at most 3-4 gens ahead of most others, but the problem was the fact that they tried to put everything in 1 cheap remote, and to itterate, WHY do you need an analog stick for games from the early 80's? Sure theres flight sims like the excellent Rescue on Fractalus but even then, it wasn't even a good one, and the KEYPAD??? i know this started with the Intellivision in 79-80 but just because someone does something stupid doesn't mean you should do it too, now i'm not a "complete airheaded child" i realize the reason for these was likely for more Computer based applications or for very advanced games like strategy/sim/rpg titles, but that makes me wonder why they didnt just... include a joystick and a keyboard/separate keypad in there? Sure probably cost but this was "the Advanced choice" anyway!, if it just had 2/3 action buttons + menu buttons with a standard joystick with an additional keyboard/keypad controller included it would be a VERY different story, but on top of all that, not only was it monstrously huge but it was incompatible with 2600 games without an adapter (which at that point, why not get a competitors system, sure keypad controller but usually those last longer than 5200 pads, are probably smaller and have more games) it would've been outdated by the late 80's! I do not hate the 5200, but i do think it would've been best if Atari either reworked the system or instead made the 7800 for 1984, especially if it came with the POKEY chip. and TL;DR an oversaturated game market without even the most basic form of quality control combined with the oversaturation of home consoles and home console software combined with the fact that many competitors would release their own games on their competitors and have competitor compatible adapters and without a REAL next-gen system to fully grab consumers or again, quality control. People opted for the cheaper home PCs, which not only were in a price war but also games (especially on tape) were cheaper than console titles, provided more than just games but also had graphics on par with the more high end systems or even somewhat comparable to the eventual next gen systems. sure its not everything, but thats just what i've gathered from what i've heard. maybe i'm missing the straw that broke the camels back, but again i wasnt there so i'm hoping i at least got most of the story down.
    • Sorry, I was responding to something specific Mr Me was saying about doing a  ColecoVision adapter.   I just gave the name of a person who did a good ColecoVision thingd but even though it is off topic it was segueing off what Mr Me said.
    • It is not modded yet.  I need to track down the path on the schematics. I tested from the cart to the first resister, but I could not figure out where it went from there.  Is the Pokey its own separate path from the cart slot? (Separate from the tia traffic). Let me see what I can find on the drawings. Thanks.
    • https://github.com/FujiNetWIFI/fujinet-firmware/wiki/Setting-up-a-TNFS-Server#TCP-on-TNFS "in the 1.3 firmware the TCP for CONFIG is activated by default, if only the server supports it (and the newest version of the tnfsd does). If TCP is not supported by the tnfsd server (or e.g.: the TCP 16384 port is blocked by firewall), firmware 1.3 will fallback to UDP."   Is there a list of URLs of the TNFS servers supporting TCP?
