The Mirage, one of the definitive mega-resorts of Las Vegas, is closing down.  Wow...Las Vegas sure has changed.

      1. x=usr(1536)

        Ditto the Tropicana.

The last few times I've been to Las Vegas it's evident that tourism never really recovered from COVID.  Fewer machines are occupied, it's been relatively easy to get a hotel room, and comps and cheap buffets are essentially a thing of the past.  Even the gaming areas designed to appeal to Chinese players are pretty much empty.

There seems to be a definite shift happening from attracting people on the basis of 24/7 hedonism and over to being event-oriented - the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, events at the Sphere, the new stadium being built, etc.  To be fair, this has been happening for a while, but it really seems to have picked up over the last 3 years or so.
      2. dudeguy

Could it be that young people have zero interest in blowing their money on computer and table games that they know are set up to where the house has the edge in nearly every single game there, and don't enjoy being around greedy simpletons who don't understand that concept?
      3. 7800Knight

@dudeguy It is possible to win in Vegas if you play the right games the right way.  Sadly, most won't be those people and I doubt today's young people have the patience or potential to even try.
      4. dudeguy

@7800Knight it's just a different culture and I think that type of gaming has gone by the wayside. Young people would rather play video games at home that have an actual storyline or play a game where they have more than a 1% sway in whether the odds will favor them or not. Most young people are playing trading card games, fewer and fewer are still playing Texas hold em (though it's still a big thing obviously)
      5. dudeguy

online gambling has taken over too. sports betting and fantasy football, March Madness brackets. so gambling is still popular with young people but they're not driving across country to do it, they're doing it from their living room. or investing in crypto BS

    • A lot of a company's success comes down to marketing. I wasn't around when the NES came out but maybe they just ran a really good ad campaign. I look at all those pre-NES consoles and just go "blecccchhh!!!" To me, the system just made sense. Simple design, sleek exterior, good graphics (for its time)   Nintendo basically dominated the market from 1985 until 1991 or so when the Genesis picked up steam with Sonic. And id argue still basically stayed the market leader until the Playstation came out

    • Given the existence of the TheC64 maxi and eventually an Amiga500 maxi I wonder if the keyboards are USB based and if they can be adapted to be used in mister and/or sw emulators.   I wouldn't mind buying inexpensive USB based replica keyboards for a few systems (c64 which would cover vic20 and c16, Amiga, Atari ST, 800xl, max, ...).   I am not sure who makes the existing ones for the maxis but if they could reach a 20us$ price point per keyboard it would be awesome and add a lot to the experience. I sure would buy a few of them. They can start with what they have and then rank by popularity ... if they do a zx spectrum let it be the plus version but I could see people interested in the chicklet as well.
    • Pretty simple board and few components and connectors. I think the audience is pretty small; most people would prefer to find other paths to any upgrades they need/want for the machine. I generally have to agree with that.
    • Most of it was tip and taxes.   The crazy part is McDonald's charges you still $5.39 for the now empty box with wrapper and bag.   But with the amount of views he got from his one post on twitter, he will earn like a few hundred dollars from it.   He should be fair divide up his twitter winfall earnings with the McDonald's workers and dasher thst went to all that trouble to just prepare and then deliver the empty box.
    • Could be slightly off and more compact - I'll have to take pictures of the two connectors next to each other.  The TE connector is larger than the TI one is.  My guess is that the TI one was custom made to fit, and Steve did confirm that it was custom made.   Edit:  I measured and remembered one of the issues - the card edge in the 74 is 20.8mm when measured end to end.  I just measured that opening in the TE connector, and it's not wide enough (20mm is a tight fit). I think compared to the TI version, it was thicker as well.  I did correspond with TE about the requirements (this was several years ago), and I need to find that e-mail, but needless to say, that was the *closest* thing they had.  My statement still stands about us needing to either recreate the connectors that can fit that were made for the 74 (or hack the TE one, which will get tedious because they will have to be hand modified).    If one of you finds an easier path, I'm all for it!
    • I'm trying to find the correct way to convert Falcon RGB565 to RGB888. Since Falcon has a 6-bit DAC, color conversion can be divided into two steps: 1) RGB565 -> RGB666 2) RGB666 -> RGB888. I'm interested in the first step. I could not find a direct description of the first step. And therefore I draw conclusions only based on indirect evidence. In the "Atari Falcon030 Technical documentation October 1st, 1992" the RGB565 mode is called XGA in some places. Another book, "XGA Software programmers`s guide" says the following: "The XGA subsystem can display direct color as a 16 bit pixel where the color fields are shown below. These fields provide the most significant bits of the inputs to the DACs with the color value. Any missing lower order bits are always specified to be 0". And I conclude that in order to convert 5-bit values to 6-bit values, I just need to shift the value to the left by 1 bit. Does Falcon actually use this method? Can anyone confirm or refute my conclusion?
