Lynx was Atari's first portable game system, and world's first color handheld. It was designed by Epyx and the engineers who created the Amiga. Hi Rick, I'm from Kelowna as well. I have the 8 MB Horizon 4000+ ramdisk.
I see that you got the 1 MB SAMS card.
How has it been working out for you?
I'm thinking of getting one so I can use the new v4.0 dm2k that now supports 80 column display if you have the F18A video upgrade together with the SAMS card.
I have the F18A upgrade, but not the SAMS.
It's too bad that the 8MB ramdisk can't be configured for using some of its RAM as a SAMS.
Let me know how that SAMS card has been working out for you.
      Cheers
      Roger

    • Oh I understand completely, and was not expecting CIEDE to be competitive in pure speed versus less complex color distance algorithms. What's puzzling to me is the fall off (and even negative regression) when adding hardware threads. I would think that just subdivides the image in smaller vertical regions and each thread can run independently, so there should be some gain. Is the color comparison done perhaps in a central thread, and thus becomes a common dependency?
    • SIMD optimization is typically a data reorganization problem, not a code problem. The compiler rarely makes solid gains unless you are already using data in a very applicable pattern (vectors with one to many transformations). For that matter I'm not really sure the problem set of RastaConverter is SIMD-friendly - it certainly should be thread friendly, since raster lines dont have inter-dependency.
    • For me, I bought a Xilinx programmer from Amazon and downloaded the Xilinx LabTools 14.7.  Using that, it stated my chip was write-protected.  I was able to erase it with this utility and then program it.  My next step will be assembling it with the Raspberry PI and trying it out.  Hopefully I can get to that this weekend.
    • I have a 256k RambiXL upgraded 800XL. It's in very good condition. I don't have any cables to go with it. Just the computer.   I have these power cables available. For an extra $10 I'll throw it in. For an extra $20 I'll throw in a A8PicoCart like shown in the picture.   Asking $200 Shipped from 90255
    • I've been working on a couple of 2600 projects over the last year, and I'm finally comfortable with sharing one of them.  This is Raknotron, a twin keypad shooter.     Raknotron_001.mkv   It draws inspiration from Black Widow, but I intend for it to be its own thing.   Right now, the game is more of a technology demo than anything else.  You can move and shoot, and you're bound to the screen.  That said, background art, character art, and animations are all in so it'll hopefully look and feel polished.  The controls are as follows:   Left Keypad: Move Up+Left | Move Up | Move Up+Right Move Left | Move Down | Move Right Move Down+Left | Unused | Move Down+Right Unused | Unused | Unused Right Keypad: Shoot Up+Left | Shoot Up | Shoot Up+Right Shoot Left | Unused | Shoot Right Shoot Down+Left | Shoot Down | Shoot Down+Right Unused | Unused | Unused   I'm open to changing around the controls for the left keypad.  I had originally mapped Move Down to the middle key on the third row, but I found myself pressing its current location instead.  I also plan on using one or two of those middle keys for special actions.   Raknotron is NTSC only at the moment.  PAL and SECAM support are planned though!  Moreover, the NTSC colors have not been finalized yet.  I'm kind of purposefully keeping things grayscale for now.   Also, the game is 4K and should be playable on real hardware.  (I tested a very similar build on my 7800 using a Harmony Encore cartridge, two Video Touch Pad controllers, and @8bitwidgets.com's Synthcart coupler.)  It should also be playable on the 2600+ if keypad support is added.  (Please don't hate me @Ben from Plaion. 😅)   As for what's next, I've been trying to adhere to a very simple development philosophy.  I focus on one thing, and I try to finish that one thing in a week's time.  The next week will be focused on adding an additional sprite to screen.  I know that doesn't sound very exciting, but I'll try to make it worth your while.   Lastly, I'm including the source code with this release.  I hope someone finds it helpful!  Also, I'm open to any suggestions on how to optimize my code.  (I know I will eventually have to scale back how many sprites I'm processing each frame.)   Let me know what you all think!   P.S.: I'm not opposed to adding joystick support.  I just really wanted to show off the keypads in a way that I don't think other games have. Raknotron_05172024.7z
    • Most of the time that's all they need, looks like ya just got unlucky this time.
    • It's been an interesting system for sure. I still spend time playing on it, yet haven't managed to boot it in PC mode as of yet, so I've been treating it more like a traditional console. On that end, I can't quite share the same amount of enthusiasm as expressed above. I'm more of the thought that it's been a mixed bag. The selection of games has steadily grown, and while I won't say it's a bad selection of games, it's not all that great either. Without wanting to offend many of the devs who have been supporting the system, I'll say that most games have been a bit "meh", with a few exceptions. And Atari's own games have been a bit in that range too. That said, the system still shows a lot of potential. Having the 2600 and 7800 homebrews has been great, but I also feel like Atari could certainly do a lot more on that front, as there are still tons of unreleased games for those systems as well as for the 5200, Lynx, and Jag that would all help fill out the library. Plus, it would be nice if Atari could reach out to some other companies that didn't have games on Atari hardware and really start making the VCS into a real retroconsole that branches outside of just the Atari realm. That would certainly attract some more attention to it.   There's still plenty of other nitpicks to be had outside of just the game library. The OS has definitely seen some improvement, but there are still plenty of stability issues and other things that detract from the overall experience. The interface could use some more tweaking, as it's proving to be quite cumbersome with a sizeable library. The system also seems to crash or hang more often than I'd like, and this is especially true if I'm watching videos of games on the store. And I d probably don't even need to mention the non-gaming "apps", which are a frustrating experience for anyone not using a keyboard and mouse.   Overall, I'd give the VCS a passing grade, but only barely (and I'm being generous here). It could be a much better experience with some more resources put towards it, as well as some more timely moves to expand the game library.
    • This is an NTSC palette conversion and NTSC aspect ratio - I will start a PAL conversion as well. gnutso_candy_ntsc.xex
    • I forgot to mention I touched all the joints on the chips with a soldering iron to reflow them but I did not add any solder to them. Like I said in the original post I did follow all the traces with a multimeter and there was continuity through all of them. I was thinking of removing the old solder and replacing it with fresh solder but I have not done that yet. I was going to order a new capacitor and then resolder everything at the same time. It was just frustrating because this is one of the games that has been on the more expensive side lately and I bought it untested thinking it just needed a good cleaning.
    • Back when it was originally released on one of the Atari flashback units, it was a PAL rom. Was a complete misstep.  They later released an ntsc rom.  Track that one down.    Might be a bit off on this but here is the original thread I remember...   https://forums.atariage.com/topic/72762-flashback-2-reviews/page/3/#comment-908821
