Funvision Symbol decyphered!

I made an interesting discovery with Challenge. The Zellers version of this game has Funvision on the screen, but the HES version (PAL) does not. I looked in the HES rom with bithacker and there is actually a Funvision logo in there, but it does not show up on the screen. I think it was "turned off" by HES. There is a third version of Challenge that is unknown, and has 276 lines. I found no Funvision logo inside. The space where it should be is blank as if was erased.

There is always more than one way to hack a ROM. You can either remove/disable/modify the code for displaying the logo or you can erase the data so that the code shows empty spaces.

Yep. I like it when leave the logo hidden in though as a clue.

On a side note I just looked into another rom, Mein Weg by Quelle, and in there the Funvision logo has been erased. Mein Weg is indeed Challenge but translates "My Way" I think going by Rom's entry in his database or roms.

I'll be damned. Yours does look like mine Stabernide. Does it have a yellow end label logo too?

So there are two roms in identical carts. It shows a cross over period, but which came first? Was it the rom with a logo replaced by the rom with no logo? I would imagine this is the case as it is easy to erase a rom.

Thanks for the pics Stabernide. I really wish you had a dumper! Take care of the T-Handle Karate too.

Yes, same yellow end label.

And I will take care :-) , and perhaps, some time, there will be a rom dumper somewhere ...

The Chinese writing on the T Handle Condor Attack label translates as "Space War"

How did you translate it? I'm presuming you don't read Chinese here. ;) I tried looking for one online but I couldn't find any type of site where I could sort of draw the symbol and it would translate it. What does the Chinese writing say on the Condor Attacks out there?

I have not been able to decipher the full text but the second two characters together on the Chinese Condor translate to War.

The First and Third characters by there self mean large, the last (fourth) charater means battle, together they literally mean large battle or "war"

you can see the translated meanings by using the english word search on the following link

http://www.zhongwen.com/

This site only works if you have a idea or good guess as to what the words may say

I have not been able to guess the second Character but maybe you will have better luck

So, did soneone already make progress concerning the confusion of "Sea Monster" / "Sea Master" and "Missile War"? Those two games also showed up in staberinde's screenshot collection, though the shots aren't labeled (which is which)...
I would like to know this too.

Does anyone here own this one:

If so, which game is it?

Uups, sorry, I didn't even recognize you could not see the picture names (and thus which screenshot is which). I attach a zip-file including the pictures, so you can see the corresponding picture name.

OK, here's my take on this...

1. "Space Robot" seems like a clone of Missile Command.

2. "Astro War" is identical to the game "Sea Monster" I had. I think it had the same label as pictured above, but with "Sea Monster" on it (only the manual sheet said "Sea Master" and was packed with the "Missile War" cart).

3. "Phantom Tank" is unknown to me.

4. "Condor Attack" was my "Galactic", though I'm pretty sure it didn't say "Goliath" at the bottom.

Same for 4a. "Condor Attack" T-Handle

5 and 5a. "Open Sesame" is unknown to me.

6. "Spider Kong" (all variations) is unknown to me.

7. "Space Tunnel" is unknown to me.

8. "Sea Monster" is the same as my "Missile War", though my cart said "Bit Corp." at the bottom, not "Fuzzy".

Are these PAL or NTSC screenshots? I ask this because your folder is called "Eigene Bilder", which hints to a german speaking country, which usually has the PAL TV standard.

I'm extremely curious about the logo on the screen of the Astrowar car-less text label from Goliath now.

In case you are still interested:

Astrowar without car and Goliath logo: same screen as with logo (Dimax)

Space Robot with car and Goliath logo: same screen as without logo (no company name on screen)

There's more to come, someday ... :-)

Got another one to add to the case. While talking about multicarts in another thread it got me to thinking of this 4in1 cart I own. Scroll down to post 75

This one worked without dipswitches, and when I took it apart there was a beautiful Funvision logo on the boad (surprise, surprise).
