H-ello. :!:

Sorry I didn't see this topic sooner, but you can all rest a smidge easier. You have to follow the money and the political favors to figure out what's going on here. Here is the chain of events:

  1. Last year, Rep. Lamar S. Smith (Republican) of Texas attempted to submit a bill called the Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2006. As far as I can tell, congress didn't even look at his bill. It was simply dropped in the trash can and forgotten about. (Probably because it was stupid and redundant.)
  2. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales fired a bunch of federal prosecutors, seemingly for failing to carry out spurious litigations that might affect elections.
  3. The House places massive pressure on Mr. Gonzales to explain his actions. He plays stupid, but feels the burn.
  4. Representative Lamar Smith of Texas stands up for poor little Gonzales. Tells the House and the press to lay off of Gonzales and "turn to more pressing issues".
  5. Attorney General Gonzales urges the House to look at his new bill, the "Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2007". Oddly, the text appears be exactly the same as text of the Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2006.
  6. Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas makes a statement that he "applaud the attorney general for recognizing the need to protect intellectual property."

Conspiracy? What'choo talkin' bout willis? Ain't nobody here but us chickens!

Mark my words. This was political manuevering by Rep. Smith in an attempt to provide his bill greater credibility. The only problem is that you don't take the #1 man on the Democrats' shit list and use him to promote a bill when the Democrats currently control the congress.

So I wouldn't fret this bill too much. Both Rep Smith and Gonzalas may by criminals that spit on the principles for which the GOP stands, but they're apparently very dumb criminals who think they'll get away with no one noticing what they're up to.
