The Official "Thrift finds" Thread

Earlier this month a co worker gave me her family's "old Atari stuff" (as she puts it):

Atari VCS "Darth Vader" with two Atari brand joysticks, two "flight stick" style (nothing special), a pair of paddle controllers and a "Video Game Storage" unit-plastic base and amber colored transparent dust cover.

Moon Patrol (complete in box)

Mean 18 Ultimate Golf (Atari 7800)-complete in box, just the top cellophane is open. By the looks of it both of these games were purchased at some clearance deal (I'm guessing maybe Big Lots-the price sticker coloring looks similar to BL's) and her parents grabbed a bunch without looking.

Today's find:

Sega Nomad with power supply, Sonic 2 cart, extra controller (Blockbuster 3-button), $7

Bad news: the plastic screen cover is broken.

Good news: the Nomad works fine

Bad news: it's a Nomad, so even though I resoldered its power plug when I opened it up to flatten out the cracked screen cover, the power plug is still flaky.

Good news: it's a NOMAD EFF YEAH! (my third)

It was bad design on the part of Sega to use a coaxial plug on top like that, sticking up vertically. There's just too much movement on a handheld for it not to get an intermittent connection.

Maybe I should try adding some monster capacitors in there to give it some "hang time".

FYI, how to open a Nomad:

1) remove the four phillips case screws (all but the lower middle one)

2) jam a gamebit (large size, same as SNES/N64 consoles and Sega carts) into the lower middle screw hole

3) push a ratchet handle onto the gamebit and drive it into the slightly smaller hole

4) once it starts turning, the case bottom will separate - keep turning until the case comes apart

5) do not put that stupid gamebit screw back when done, it's better to just leave the hole empty

(if you have a truly dead Nomad, consider it to be a source of four donor case screws)

To remove the analog board assembly:

1) disconnect the flat cable to the digital half

2) disconnect the cables near the volume and brightness controls

3) there are seven small screws holding the analog board down - do not unscrew the middle four, they hold the screen on!

4) the analog board should come right out

5) pay attention to the red power switch cap - you will need to replace it before screwing the board back down!

Not too much today. :|

Yard sale had a SNES mouse sitting in the "free" box, so I grabbed it. Don't have any supported games yet though, so I can't test it.

Estate sale had a dirty TI99/4A sitting on the floor of the garage with $10 sticker on it, I passed. Then I looked in the basement and found a set of set of of TI joysticks for $4 so I got them. Of course they don't work, but I think I can use them to mod some CX-40's to work with the TI99 instead.

Non-game, but nerdy: A Star Trek: Next Gen phaser TV remote for $5

Yesterday I took a quick trip to local village for laundry and found about 50 yard sales there. The village was having Sunflower festival this weekend and many people often hold sales during that time as there's usually more poeple coming from out of town. Of all the gaming stuff I spotted, only one was of interest to me.

I found a complete boxed Coleco Amaze-A-Tron. (First time I saw it I thought it was Tron game) The box was in raggy shape but the game unit appeared to have been played once then put back in plastic bag and left alone for the next 20 years. No battery corrision, and the manual is in excellet condition. Also included is the 4 pieces so it's quite complete.

The price? one quarter. =) =) Piccy here (on top of today's Detroit Free Press):

Box: http://personalpages.tds.net/~wilykat/DSC02765.JPG

Unit + manual + 4 pieces: http://personalpages.tds.net/~wilykat/DSC02766.JPG (both covers installed on back)

Today I went back to visit the Share Shop as it's only open Monday, Wed, and Saturday. Almost everything there is $0.25 unless otherwise priced. Today, I found something I never expected to find: a working Palm m100! Not up to today's standard but still good enough for shopping list (so I don't need to remember which 2600 games I have) While the m100 won't replace the other PDA I currently use, I can afford to "lose" this one accidently and not worry about the cost of replacing since I paid...

25 cents! :D

battery cover included, no cable but not hard to deal with. stylus included is not original and considering tight fit, I'm guessing the stylus was meant for different unit. The original sale reciept from buy.com is included showing the unit was sold on July 2, 2001 so just a hair over 6 years old now. No listed price though.

Hey everyone. So I was out today at yard sales and I happond to actually find an Atari 5200. I have never seen anything Atari 5200 in the wild before...over my 8+ years of yard sales I have been to...aside from a couple games here and there. it had:

The Atari 5200 system with power cord, 2 controllers, Owners Manual, and switchbox manual...but no switchbox.

Frogger in the box w/ manual

Qbert int he box w. manual

Kangaroo with manual only

Countermeasure cart only

Pac-Man with manual only

Galaxian with manual

I asked em if it worked and they said it did the last time they used it(who knows how many years ago it was) It was all dusty as hell as well. I asked em how much they wanted and they asked me how much i'd pay. I actually said I'll give you $5 as its dirty as hell and you dont have the switchbox and no idea if it stilll works. They took it! I couldnt believe it.

I also got a working console only Sega Genesis model 2 for $1

So I spent a total of $6 on all of that. Pretty good I would have to say.

don't feel bad.. my automatic response for wild finds when people ask me to name a price is usually $5 as well, for any thing.. as it is, if you don't know, then you don't care, and yer just there to dump it. take advantage of the situation.. that $5 is $5 the seller didn't have before

Ok, here is a weird spot to find games but I was happy. I was walking downtown here in my small town of Clintonville, WI and in this box on the side of the road marked to go to the garbage dump I found 7 Sega Master System games and 2 Genesis games all with boxes and missing a few manuals. The games are as follows:

Master system-

Hang On/Astro Warrior

Double Dragon

Altered Beast

Casino Games

Reggie Jackson Baseball

After Burner

Alex Kidd In Shinobi World

Genesis Games-

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle

PGA Tour golf II

I dont have the systems to play them, but for free, ya cant go wrong!!!!!

Here's a batch of games I picked up over the weekend.A few are from a garage sale, the remainder from a used game store:

IMG_2643.jpg

The NES games , ATV Offroad Fury II, Carmen Sandiego, and my loose doubles of

Boogerman, Syd of Valis, and Atomic Robo Kid are trade fodder.

@RaRoss: That's a cool find. Imagine how much other stuff probably went to that dump over the years........

Yesterday was one of those days that keeps me thrifting. I found a bona-fide Atari 2600 (four-switch woody) with eleven cartridges, power supply and third-party joystick, all for six bucks. The Atari needed some work, so I got to play doctor, replacing the RF cable and cleaning the contacts in the power and color switches. After that, she played as good as new! Some of the cartridges weren't so lucky. A couple had their PCM's knocked out of whack, apparently victim of some overly curious kid.

Question for you hardware techie types: The power supply seems to work well enough, but I happened to try it on my Krokodile Cart, and the cart never would read or write correctly. When I tried the cart with another power supply, it worked fine. So, should I be concerned about the original power supply? Is it normal for the power output to be "sub-par"? Is it likely to get worse? Does it hurt the Atari to use the power supply?

well.. I'm not really hard core techie per say.. but if yer trying to use a 30 odd year old wall wart then you could very well be dealing with some dirty power issues.. I'm not familiar with the Krokodile kart myself, but seeing thats its newer technology, it might need a little higher tolerances for power usage..

as for the VCS, I think you can actually run the board of a nine volt battery just fine.. once again.. I'm not that techie when it comes to it,

but I would say that it would be good practice to make sure the wall warts are producing the required out put, and when necessary, use an appropriate after market product.

How would you go about running the system off a 9V battery? I've heard it could be done with the Flashback 2, but a real VCS? That's news to me...

by no meens do I think it would be practical, and the Mah's are off, but the board runs off of 9v DC

more theoretical, than practical

Banner day at the thrift. Mostly Playstation, but that's kind of cool as Iv'e been playing it a bunch lately. I have one of those arcade cabinet kits that uses a game console, and I've got Playstation in there. A lot of the games I've got are pretty fun (though many do not lend themselves to the stand-up arcade experience), and the games that came at the end of the PS1's life are pretty amazing graphically.

Playstation PSone unit + component cable: $7.50

Duo analog flight sticks: $3

= PS games, all $2

Miss Spider's Tea Party

Tony Hawk 2

Spongebob Squarepants

Rainbow Six

Army Men 3D

Motocross Mania

Syphon Filter

Medal Of Honor Underground

Star Wars jedi Power Battles

Spec Ops Ranger Elite

= SNES Kablooey: $1.25

= Xbox Sims Bustin' Out: $2.50

= 15" high sparkly new looking Waco Jackpot Machine: $10

Safest way would be to just wire up a 9v battery snap to a 1/8 inch mono phone plug (tip positive) and plug it in like you would the AC adapter.
