Dauber
So...you buy a collection of Atari 2600 games in order to get a nice wide variety into your collection. Before you know it, you can build a fort out of all the dupes you have. POST PICTURES OF YOUR COMBAT COLLECTION!!!! So...you might be looking at this collection and thinking, "Hmm, Dauber has only three varieties in his collection," right? Wrong. One of those graphic-label Combat carts actually has text that's slightly more orange than the text on the other graphic labels! [All together now!] "OOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh!" Alas, I never did get a numbered Combat cartridge in the past 23 years I've been an Atari 2600 owner. You just gotta wonder how many orphaned 2600 systems are out there...y'know, without their Combats... I think the last lot of games I bought had frickin' FOUR OF THESE THINGS... Foxsolo2000
There has to be more combats than any other Atari game. What makes me laugh is when you see Ebay sellers put them down as extremely rare and want up to £5 for some of them

+atari2600land
I only have 2 Combats. One I bought for the extra cart. Now I have a Combat without a cart and one with a cart. And I thought there were more Pac-Mans than anything.

Room 34
Alas, I never did get a numbered Combat cartridge in the past 23 years I've been an Atari 2600 owner. That one in the upper-right looks like a number label to me. The positioning and kerning of the text on the face labels of the number label carts is different... "sloppier" than the later labels. "Game Program" was larger and higher up, and the CX number was printed below the Atari logo. Yeah, that sure looks like a number label to me. What, is it missing its end label? They wouldn't have made more Pac-Man carts than 2600 systems, would they? What? Did Combat come with each system? Assuming you're not being facetious, I'll answer that -- yes, originally Combat did come with each system. I seem to recall that they did make more Pac-Man carts than the number of 2600s that had been sold to that point. (Or was it E.T.?) The thinking was that the game would be so "hot" that it would sell more systems. (Yeah, I think it was E.T.) @kielbaca: That picture of the Combat carts in the shape of the tank is sweet! That's most definitely a 1977 Combat. I got one CIB ^_^ Actually I got two, and I don't have a regular CIB combat so its in my complete minus combat promo boxed 2600, to make it "more than complete"
+atari2600land
I didn't know that Combat came with each Atari 2600. Nowadays you don't get any game with a new system. Also, I could understand wanting a few games as backups in case one cartridge dies, but IMHO having like 20 cartridges with the same game seems a bit odd. Crazy Climber
Believe it or not out of the 300+ Atari cartridges I own not one of them is a Combat. Everytime I see it for sale it's always a two to five bucks and I just know I'll end up with one out of a lot I purchase sooner or later so why buy it seperately right? I do own the Sears version though.
gamme
I recently brought a Combat down to the used game shop for trade and he didn't even want it. I slipped it onto his pile anyway because it was a picture label variation and most of them that he had were the text labels. I have 2 of them..a text and a picture label version and that's it. I don't like the keep doubles unless there is some variation.

Also, I could understand wanting a few games as backups in case one cartridge dies, but IMHO having like 20 cartridges with the same game seems a bit odd. Back then things were different. People didn't understand the concept of purchasing media... if you couldn't play the thing right out of the box, people would feel ripped off. As for owning 20 Combats... I don't think anyone SETS OUT to own that many. It's just that, as you buy games in lots, you're bound to end up with lots in your collection. (I own 10 myself, although as far as I'm concerned, there's absolutely no reason to own more than 3 -- and that's only if you're obsessive about collecting all of the major label variations.) sandmountainslim
Hmmm, I think there are enough Combats to build a bridge spanning the Pacific Ocean. My hat is off to Combat carts! It is most likely the Combat cart which sacrifices itself for the new Homebrew productions. Combat becomes Climber 5 Combat becomes Starfire Combat becomes Conquest of Mars and soon some brave Combat carts will become Ladybug! Respect for that. Inky
Combat! is the Jesus of the 2600 world. More so than any other game, it gives its life so that others may live. Yea, for it is written: "For Atari loved its consumerbase so much, that it gave its numerous Combats, so that other games may live" -- Combat 0:1 Here endeth the lesson. +SpiceWare
I had a bunch. I sent them to AtariAge for store credit. AtariAge uses them for making homebrews.

Well, there is definitely an end label on it, but it's the regular lower-case red text with a silver border. No number. It could have been put there by a previous owner, though; might have had a number label on it at one time.

I have all 9 of the number label carts, and plenty of regular text labels, and in all my experience, if the face label looks like that one in the upper right, it's ALWAYS a number end label.
