godzillajoe
This game *IS* hard Only 33,190 so far. And the fact that there may be some slight delay using the Stelladaptor doesn't help. I swear I meant to turn a corner and it didn't respond.
jwierer
Challenge accepted. Here I am on the 1st key and also when I get wiped out on the 5th key. In case anybody is wondering, the 5th key is where the power pellets stop turning the ghosts blue so you are basically on your own. I may try later using the standard boards, but puckman forced me out of using any patterns I've used in the past . On my stand up Pacman I think the highest I've ever got is the 19th Key. -Jeff
PacManPlus
Ok. I think I need to play this tonight, as long as things don't go wrong with the conversion that's happening at work...
godzillajoe
48,030 I actually did better but foolishly started a new game before a screen cap thinking it kept the highest score
jwierer
201,930. I think this is the 8th Key. -Jeff
shadow460
Looks like jwierer got the challenge. I'll post up Food Fight tomorrow--I haven't been home hardly at all today to get it typed up.
Dauber
ABOUT EFFING TIME!!!! Not only did I finally break 6 digits, but I also did it on the Hangly maze, up to second key.
shadow460
Congrats to jwierer and to Dauber for meeting this week's challenge. You guys officially have bragging rights until someone can meet a challenge in the future. I need suggestions from everyone who's played for the game to be played in two weeks. Next week is Food Fight (I'll get it up this evening), and the week after is up to all you players. Frogger is in the list of selections, too. shadow460
Atari Pro System High Score Comeptition The third homebrew installment, Frogger, will be played at a later date. Until then, we bring you action for Charley Chuck's home town. Up the road from the Corral sits a local ice cream and dairy store. Tonight they have an ice cream tasting featuring flavors like Plutonimu Lime and Ice of Neptune. Charley Chuck just can't wait for the doors to open, so he busts in and spots a savory cone. Surrounded by bananas, watermelon, and other ingredients, Charley makes his way to the treat. Busted! The ice cream chefs come out in full force. Charley finds himself in the middle of a full blown Food Fight! This week's game: Atari Corp.'s Food Fight Difficulty: Intermediate, starting at level one. Difficulty switches should be set to the left position. Recommended Controls: CX-40 Atari Joystick Challenge: Attain five instant replays in the game using the settings above. This will be verified on the honor system. Congratulations to jwierer and Dauber for meeting the challenge in Pac-Man. Current High Scores: None yet Next week's game is to be announced. Please submit a suggestion for next week's game with your score. If no suggestions are recieved, the game will be Dig Dug by default. I still need suggestions for sports titles, including racing games and hybrids like Ninja Golf. Last week's best gobblers: Standard Maze: Dauber: 92,400 godzillajoe: 48,030 atarifever: 25,540 vdub_bobby: 21,920 LarcenTyler: 6330 Challenge Winners: jwierer: 8th key level and 201,930 points Dauber: 2nd key level and 110,770 points Hints and Tips: Instant replays can only occur every five levels. Watermelon never runs out, so where it's present, stand on a patch of it and unload! Remember that the cone is worth more if you get to it faster. Only hang out on a level if you intend to knock out the chefs or you're trying for an instant replay. Edited November 5, 2006 by shadow460
godzillajoe
OK since I stayed in tonight, I'll get the scoring started with my first try of 210,800 No picture since I can totally waste this score with some practice. I used to play the hell outta this game Also I assume you mean INTERMEDIATE level because there is no NORMAL Two other helpful hints 1. You can bring a piece of fruit or veggie over to the next level if you're holding it when you eat the cone so grab a piece right before you chow down. It may save you from a nearby chef at the start next screen 2. The chefs will fall down the open holes so lead them there if you're being chased and not near a tasty weapon. Also, take your pic or screen shot immediately after you lose your last guy since the game never displays your score again once it goes back to the title screen and attract mode! WTF?! Hitting PAUSE as the fruits and veggies are flying towards you last dead Charlie is the way to go! Edited November 5, 2006 by godzillajoe
shadow460
Edited the original post. Thanks, Joe. I guess I should play the game before I put the first post up, huh?
godzillajoe
It's all good. I'm gonna crack open a beer, crank some tunes and hit some chefs in the face with pies!
shadow460
lol, I ran for some 259,000 points myself. Food Fight is a great stress reliever!
Lauren Tyler
I know I can do better, I just need to find my Atari 7800 power adaptor. (Ugh!) I only managed to get one replay on Level 7. I always wondered what the trick to earning a replay was. godzillajoe
Two more slight corrections, instant replays are not limited to every five levels, at least not levels that are multiples of 5 as I just got one on level 14 The cone isn't actually worth more if you eat it sooner. It's worth 500 x the level you're on so 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 etc. Dunno if that maxes at some point. I made it to level 22 and it gave me 11,000 points for it. The key to big scores is higher levels but it gets FAST.
Dauber
It's only worth 500x up to a certain level, then the bonus stays the same no matter what level it is. I forgot what the top is...
Dauber
Okay, I can finally submit a photograph of my TV for the HSC. Some things I've discovered for the first time thanks to HSC: - The instant replay song does come to an end if your replay is long enough -- one replay I had played the entire song, then there was a few seconds of silence, and when Chuck ate the cone, the little coda thing kicked in. - Speaking of instant replay...I think the myth about the instant replay possible only every five levels has to do with something I've just now noticed: the watermelons are on every fifth level. As you don't run out of watermelon, you can just stand on one and wipe out chefs up until the last drop from the cone hits -- in fact, that's a strategy I've been using: go to the watermelon nearest the cone, and just spend the duration of the level constantly hitting chefs with chunks-o-melon. Since instant replays tend to happen on the screens that take a longer time (and some near-death experiences), people tend to see instant replays on the watermelon levels, since they probably spend more time on those. - Now...has anybody encountered the following screen? The screen just freezes, with just Chuck and the ice cream cone. No chefs, no pits, no throwable food, etc. Although the screen freezes, the "Mess Call" jingle plays normally, but nothing else happens, and the only way to do anything else is to power off and power back on. I'm pretty sure that happened to me in MESS once too.... - It occurs to me that someone should do a hack of this game...have it play normally, except that if Chuck happens to fall into one of those open chef hole thingies, the scene cuts to a deep pit where you're joined with E.T. and you spend hours trying to figure out how the heck to get out of it. - I think I found a bug...it was on level 4, I think. One of the piles of pies got down to two pies. And those last two were unpickupable. (Yes, that's a word. It's a word because I said it's a word.) Now....my [current] high score submission is attached...(and yes, that is a penguin on top of my TV set....and no, it didn't explode.) 128bytes
When we say "difficulty switches to the left position", what does that mean, and why does it matter? (this is a serious question - does it really effect anything for Food Fight, and isn't that the "A" difficulty position on the 7800 as regards 2600 games?) godzillajoe
A couple more tips and things no one asked for but I've been playing all morning 1. The max score for eating a cone is 25,000 for level 50 and anything beyond 2. Chefs can kill each other so drawing them into a cross-fire can be helpful in the higher levels

Atarifever
Gah! I just did 576,000 put hit pause too late to snap a pic! Here's my question regarding the honour system: does Joe's score here still count? If it does, which I'm pretty sure is the case, then why ever bother to snap a pic? godzillajoe
I'm not counting it and don't think it should. That said, if anyone is cheating or making up scores to try to impress a bunch of strangers on a message board you're one sad little puppy. And besides, I can beat it! I just need a beer first! Gah! I just did 576,000 put hit pause too late to snap a pic! Here's my question regarding the honour system: does Joe's score here still count?
