Question - FB2 Portable?

Recommended Posts

Look on page 3 of this thread. Post #75.

Someone posted a picture of what Curt may have in mind. His next post on the next page said something like... kind of... something like that... now hold on a minute. LOL

Scroll up on that 3rd page and you'll see that Fuji symbol handheld. I thought it was cool and posted that picture a while back. I linked it from somewhere.

BTW: You still haven't told me what that "Linux" handheld was... :ponder:

The Linux handheld is just a dream of mine, I wish Atari would make one that was equivalent to the GP2X. Nothing more.

Then in that case I've some research to do... ;)

The real dream machine is an Open platform with hardware like in Sony PSP plus a touchscreen and bluetooth. But running Atari software on it kind of misses the point. It is a bit like playing Pong on a 5000 USD large screen.

At least I tend to use the best available programs on the platform I am using. In the case of Sony PSP the games are typical titles from 2006 or 2007 plus movies.

What attracts me in these retro-things is that the Atari software is the best thing you can run on them. So please keep the Flashbacks just as "crippled" as the originals. More than half of the fun for a programmer is to be able to squeeze the last bit of performance and gameplay out of the hardware.

A Linux handheld is a nice idea but it is not a "Flashback" thing.

Not to mention the obvious differences in community. Linux is nice, but some people take the "open source" ideal a bit too far :P .

Actually though, the whole concept of a portable flashback is quite an interesting programming endeavor. Not only do you have to deal with the limitations of the 2600 itself, but the small screen and use of portable-style game design. Could be quite fun to work with, really.

Oh no, not a flashback but a unique item, totally Atari, totally a new platform. Not to say that it would be ultra proprietary, but a new, cool Atari product. I love the Flashbacks (at least the second one, the other is okay) but it's really nothing new and isbuilt on what is already there. LET ME STRESS that I love the FB's and wouldn't have it any other way. But I feel that a Linux handheld would be a great thing. A competitor for the GP2X and a statement to the gaming community as well as the computer industry.

Anyway, that's off topic here, there's a thread I started about it here and atari-forum.

As far as size, I simply can't use a GB Micro, I can barely use a GBA without cramping :) I hope that's not what you have in mind. I like a solid feel to my stuff, too. That's why I drew my concept like I did, where your hands would be kinda spread out unlike say, an SNES controller or a GB color.

I was thinking the other day about aftermarket accessories. Skins, themed cases, magnifiers, all those neat things.

I wonder if I sent Curt a clay model of my drawing, if that would spur things along any, get the old blood pumping. :lust:

Well... if you provide the hardware, I'll provide the operating system! :D

Oh? You didn't know, we're using the Zen Buddhist New Age Inversion calendar, we still have about another week, maybe two...

Seriously though, it'll be a little while longer before any kind of announcement - good bad or otherwise, hang tight...

Plus look at it this way, if it wasn't happening I think you'd all see my tirade on the forum, so just hang tight, things take quite a bit of time to get signed, sealed and delivered.

Curt

How long is "about another week" in the Zen Buddhist New Age Inversion calendar? Anybody?

PS. Where there any good "news" yesterday? I kind of waited for some cool jokes about the FB2 Portable on April 1st.

LORDI the GODS of METAL have stolen Satan's Flying "V" Guitar shaped space ship and are on a mission to rid the galaxy of all the idiots....It's a big job but LORDI is up to the challenge!!!

post-7957-1175548417_thumb.jpg

The Flashback 2 Portable released with this LORDI hack would sell in Finland like CRAZY. All the kids know "Hard rock hallelujah" after Lordis victory in the European song contest last year.

Their monstrous look is a bit deceiving. The lyrics is actually positive and the music pretty good to listen to. The whole band is dressed in latex and they look like plastic toys.

You won't see any hacks on an Atari product unless atari owns the rights to the original game and then they would go with the original game not the hack.

However if you download your own BINS into the FB2 portable you can play all the hacks you want

I think it should be made a small as possible in regards to stylish embellishments.

There is nothing I hate more on a handheld than empty case. Tight compactness ftw.

I completely agree - I think this should be made as compact as possible (I'm personally thinking something pocket sized). If I want something big, bulky, and will make people stare, I'll pull out my... Lynx.

The case design was completed back in November - we brought in one of the top Industrial Designers who has done work for Jensen. I spent a great deal of time detailing the look and lineage of Atari products and how - if production of the 2600 had never stopped - it would've evolved into this very product.

Curt

From the Dedicated Systems forum:

Flashback Portable Update -- It hasn't been officially canned if that's anyway to put a "good"? view on it....

Curt

The glass is either half full or half empty, depending on your POV...

Sounds good. I like the idea of a 2600 'evolution'.

Thats fine, assuming you're continuing on where the Atari 2600jr left off...

/referring to my previous post about empty space and the original vcs :P

Generally I have faith in you Curt, you don't typically let people down when you can help it anyway, so thumbs up to you. I don't see how releasing an image of the case would hurt things, and if I'm not the first, let me at least join in requesting for some sort of picture to at least lull us from curious wonderment.
