jbanes
Seems the people camping out at the Toys'R'Us in Times Square did so all for naught. The store is stocked to the gills with a whopping 5,000 Wiis! http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entert...-wii-215830.php The formerly cool folks over at PCGamer convinced one poor sap to give up his opportunity of ever owning a PS3 in exchange for a $7,500 PC Gaming rig. They'll be checking in with him to ensure that he holds up his contract. http://www.pcgamer.com/archives/2006/11/111706_-_one_le.html With the accessories hitting the street in advance of the console, GameSpot grabbed a Wii Classic Controller to give their first impressions. http://wii.gamespy.com/articles/746/746735p1.html The next PS3 shipment is next week. Unfortunately, there will only be about 100,000 units. Pack ammunition. http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=7250 The Wii Store is officially open for business. That is, if you're lucky enough to have a review system. Otherwise you may need to wait a few hours. http://lennin.kotaku.com/gaming/gizmodo/cl...sole-215828.php http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/18/wii-sto...n-for-business/ eBay is NOT going crazy over Wiis. jbanes
Seems that a couple of fellows looking for a PS3 managed to end up with a Wii before the street date. There's more info on the second page, where one of the fellows says that Wii Sports Boxing is his favorite game. He even made a Mini-Mii! (insert groans here) http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=129566 New Yorkers should have Wiis in their hands right about now. I'll post a story as soon as one hits the wire. jbanes
The Wii has officially hit the streets! With over 1,000 people lined up in Times Square, there is no current sign that the Toys'R'Us will be unable to fulfill all the orders. http://today.reuters.com/news/articleinves...6&type=qcna
jbanes
Watch live coverage of Times Square here: http://www.gamespot.com/events/wiilaunch/l...p;click=topslot Just click on the "Watch it Live!" button! Edit: The show appears to be tape-delayed. I expected it to be only a minute or two, but it would appear it's significantly delayed. If you tune in now, you can see the sale of the first console. jbanes
That's it! The first Wii has been sold! Here it is with pictures. Reggie waits behind the counter for the first customer. The first customer Isaiah "Triforce" enters. He's been camping on and off for 9 days. Note that he has a powerglove on his right arm, and a Triforce T-Shirt under his jacket. The back of his jacket says "Nintendo". Obviously a dedicated individual. Triforce grabs a copy of Zelda to go with his Wii, and brings it up to the counter. The sale is made! Triforce holds up the receipt while Reggie holds up the Wii. Triforce and Reggie pose with the Wii for the media. A closeup of Triforce's Wii. At Triforce's request, Reggie takes the Wii out of the box and signs it. Triforce proudly displays his signed Wii. Perhaps one day it will be worth millions. Reggie places the Wii back into the box, packs it in a bag along with Zelda, hands it to Triforce, and the two shake hands just before they part. (Note the bag over Triforce's shoulder.) That's it, folks. The event appeared to be nice and orderly with plenty of units on hand. Tomorrow we'll all have to see if there were any instances of riots or mass shortages. 'Night all! jbanes
Well, it looks like the Nintendo launch went off without too much of a hitch. In NYC, the actual number of Wiis turned out to be closer to 4,000 than 5,000 according to C|Net. However, there was enough for everyone, and a peaceful and fun event was had by all. Interestingly, very few people responded that they'd be selling their systems on eBay. http://news.com.com/Its+all+fun+and+games+..._3-6137020.html A few people used the money they earned camping out for the PS3 to purchase a Nintendo Wii. http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentSe...4&t=TS_Home A rather long Wii commercial has shown up in Mexico. http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9955-1.html?tag=news Check out the footage of the NYC launch event over on C|Net. Includes an interview with Triforce's wife, and several on-the-street responses. http://news.com.com/1606-2-6136994.html Los Angeles also had a thousand people waiting for the Wii from the local E.B. Games store. No report of supply problems. http://news.com.com/2061-10797_3-6137018.html Some pictures of just how many Wiis were in NYC; http://crunchgear.com/2006/11/19/live-from-new-york-its-wii/ While a lot of people went home happy last night, not everyone got the loot. Even in stores with 100+ units, the Wii sold out quickly. http://hondaswap.com/members-lounge/no-wii-me-77810/ http://www.intersubjectivity.net/2006/11/wii_19.html http://fuzzz.gaulin.ca/2006/11/19/sweetmon...-getting-a-wii/ Most people are still tired after staying out last night to get their Wiis. Never the less, reviews are starting to trickle in. A suprising number of those reporting back are women or couples. :!: http://www.micechat.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1123822 http://mog.com/dangercat/blog_post/26406 http://xavipants.livejournal.com/136689.html A number of fellows chased away a woman away from a Target line at 4 AM in Lansing, NY. A school teacher no less. http://allthingspark.blogspot.com/2006/11/no-wii-for-me.html Albert's home town of Austin Texas experienced something of a run on Nintendo Wiis. Albert
Albert's home town of Austin Texas experienced something of a run on Nintendo Wiis. I guess Nintendo didn't realize that the Texans are a bit more techologically savvy than our President. http://dubiousquality.blogspot.com/2006/11...-in-austin.html Yep, and I can corroborate the above blog, as Sauron and I visited eight stores last night (four Wal-Marts that were selling at midnight, two Best Buys and two Targets). All the Wal-Marts were sold out well before we got there (they gave out vouchers earlier in the evening) and the other stores already had tons of campers outside. We realized it was pretty hopeless and returned home after that. I'm sure we would have seen this same scenario play out at every single store in Austin selling the Wii (probably at least a hundred stores). ..Al

jbanes
seems like the guy is just making commotion.. but this is odd though, i went to a local radio shack a month ago, and they said they wouldnt be carrying any wii systems. If you read through the rest of the comments, there was a lot of people backing up his statements. Pretty much everyone who pre-ordered through them is reporting that the status is now "cancelled". Also, doing a web search for "Radioshack Wii" shows that a LOT of people were directed to Radioshack to get their pre-orders. It also shows that Radioshack seemingly "ran out" fairly quickly. Given that the product isn't even listed on their site anymore, it would seem that it got pulled at some point. If they pulled the Wii (rather than saying it was simply out of stock) what does that mean for everyone who pre-ordered?

jbanes
A video has now appeared of the PS3 running Fedora Linux. The video includes a voice-over explaining what's going on at each step. jbanes
The New York Times spent a full weekend with the PS3, playing over 13 games. Their impression was less than favorable. From the article: "The whole PlayStation 3 system is surprisingly clunky to use and simply does not provide many basic functions that users have come to expect, especially online." http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/20/arts/20g...amp;oref=slogin

jbanes
It seems that Reggie let slip that Nintendo may have overstated how many Wiis were actually available at launch. Nintendo is now expecting 1 million Wiis to be sold by the end of November, and 2 million to be sold by the end of December. It's unknown what this means for the product availability. http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=11774 Nintendo has spent Megabucks on their new commercials. To the tune of $200 million! Now if they could just save us from the bad puns. http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/12/nintendo...ed-200-million/ Wii would like to play.
