It seems that Reggie let slip that Nintendo may have overstated how many Wiis were actually available at launch. Nintendo is now expecting 1 million Wiis to be sold by the end of November, and 2 million to be sold by the end of December. It's unknown what this means for the product availability.

I knew that this had to be the case. There is no way in hell they would have sold out with the alleged 4 million which were supposed to be available at launch day. Around here, from inquiries I made, there were only a few more Wiis than PS3s.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that I think the North Am Wii launch was actually about 300,000 units.

The alleged number of units was 1 million. 4 million is the number that was expected by the end of 2006. Reggie just dropped that number by half.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that I think the North Am Wii launch was actually about 300,000 units.

The numbers on the wire are currently between 600,000 and 800,000. 300,000 is far too low of an estimate considering that more stores had Wiis, and most had more Wiis than PS3s.

Of course, we haven't gotten official figures back from Sony either. There may be a nasty surprise about their 400,000 number as well. (Though most people are probably prepared for that one.)

I don't think Nintendo ever said they were going to have 4 million units on launch day. The figure I saw repeatedly was about 1 million on launch day and 4 million by the end of the year. Given how many more Wiis were available at stores compared to the PS3, I'd say they had about 750,000 available for launch. The above article says 1 million by the end of November, which would give them another 10 days to get 250,000 units into stores.

Ooooo! That's kind of neat! Thanks Cheese!

Here we are:

Those should update to the latest numbers on every page refresh.

Keep in mind that these are just the estimates that have been going around. They're probably based on the same info I've been pulling off the wire, and may not be accurate. The actual numbers may be higher or lower. We won't know until the respective companies either tell us, or NPD releases solid numbers from retail tracking.

Edit: If you're dull enough to wonder about the 360, here you go:

Has anyone noticed how these Wii numbers have been climbing?

wii_forum2.jpg

It was at ~660,000 when I started, and now it's at 686,513. Every so often it seems to go up by about a thousand. Makes one wonder just how many Wiis Nintendo actually did sell?

Apparently, the UK is excited about their own Nintendo Wii Launch. According to Gamasutra, the Wii preorders on Amazon.co.uk sold out within minutes. If you didn't get one, don't worry too much. Amazon says there will be more consoles available on launch day. (December 8th)

If you need batteries for your Wiimotes, try these $723,440 batteries from Amazon. Marked down to an affordable $12.99, you'll be confident in knowing you've got the best batteries money can buy.

(Update: Looks like Amazon has fixed the problem. The batteries are still available, and I've posted a pic so you can see what Amazon used to show.)

According to the nextgen numbers, the Wii has broken 700,000 sales. If my calculations are correct, the Wii us selling at a rate of about 40,000 units per day. If this pace keeps up, the Wii will have sold 1,000,000 units by the last day of November. Precisely in line with the last predictions given.

wii_forum2.jpg

Currently, that places the estimates of Wiis vs. PS3s at a 2.6:1 ratio.

Want free Tacos for life? Fork over your PS3 and Taco Bell will give you $12,500 worth of Taco vouchers. Burp.

If you've heard rumors that the PS3's memory card reader was defective, you can rest easy now. The manufacturer claims there are no defects in the units, and that the card reader should operate correctly.

Wired's GameLife Blog takes a look at the PSP to PS3 connectivity, and clears up several misconceptions. The good news? Children can remotely watch movies under the covers after their parents send them to bed.

It seems that analysts are continuing to slash their launch figure estimates. American Technology Research estimates that the actual launch figures for the PS3 were between 125,000 and 175,000 units while the Wii launched with only 400,000 units.

If there was any question about Nexgen's estimates before, I believe that their current information proves them to be unreliable. They have slashed the estimates of the Wii sales to around 480,000, most likely in response to this news. Oddly, the PS3 estimates have remained in place despite similarly bad news for the PS3's launch numbers.

The Washington Post decided to pit the PS3 against the Wii by inviting over a bunch of casual gamers. The catch? They stacked the odds in favor of the PS3 by hooking it up to a $4,500 HDTV. The Wii was unfairly hooked to a standard tube set. Click the link below to find out what happened. The best line? "Some of the verdicts they offered are unprintable."

Yet another publisher with PS3 exclusive titles has jumped ship. Konami annouced that Fatal Inertia and Blade Storm will be ported to the XBox 360.

With the reports that the PS3 launch may have been as low as 125,000 units, Gizmondo has suggested that ~10% of all the PS3's availble are currently being listed on eBay. The photo evidence only captures the current state of eBay, and does not count consoles already sold. Other avenues like Craig's List are not counted. Fraudulent PS3 sales may also be showing up in their numbers.

Two Gamestop employees are now behind bars for stealing four PS3 systems. The two theives reported an "armed robbery" to the Sacremento police on November 16th. Unfortunately, the police investigated and found it more likely that the two employees swiped the systems outside of business hours, then reported the incident as a robbery. Whoops.

In a touching story, a generous teenager donated his PS3 to a raffle to raise money for a family dealing with tough times. They were originally hoping to raise $500 for the cause, but the addition of the PS3 may drive the fund raising much higher. (Note that there's a video available in the upper-right hand corner.)

The San Francisco Chronical has published an article praising the Wii for making players look "utterly and completely dorky". They compare playing the Wii to "looking like a deranged crossing guard" or "someone giving a PowerPoint presentation in the middle of a meth binge." I guess it's a good thing they had fun playing it. ;)

Until then, the Wii is a solid alternative for gamers who don't want to spend $1,000 or more on eBay for a PS3. And if buying one means you look like someone giving a PowerPoint presentation in the middle of a meth binge, that's a small price for artistic progress.

:rolling:

I'm really starting to consider the Wii as the logical winner of this round. I'm thinking that it is just an extension of what many of us have already found... pushing the technology farther and adding a bunch of flashy bells and whistles isn't necessarily the right direction to go. Neither is making your console as complicated (and expensive) as a PC. We already know, the EXPERIENCE is what matters. How much fun it is. The Wii may be a way to make that concept mass-markatable outside of gaming niche markets. The more I hear about it, the more I think it is a sleeper. Honestly, if I were to consider any of the current generation, the Wii would be the top contender (barring Amazon giving away more $100 360s).

But $250 is too much for my tastes, for a Wii. What they need is a product like this for under $100. *THAT* would be a huge seller, although I suppose that number is unrealistic for the Wii's features.

I think I'll just wait for the FB3. :)

How is this unfair :?

The wii cannot display HD, the PS3 can. The odds weren't stacked in favor of the PS3, the PS3 has abilities the wii doesn't. What is really unfair is trying to make a low end system comparable to a high end system.

The Wii is still going to look better on an HDTV with component cables than on a standard tube. On the HDTV, you'll be seeing 480p with a 16:9 resolution. Two quality features that are not available on most non-HD tubes.

Nope and nope...

This launch is going pretty much verbatim exactly as the last launch did. The Dreamcast was right around where the Xbox 360 was at that point and lots of people said Sony would never make up the distance - they did within one year. As for Nintendo, lots of people thought the GameCube was going to put Nintendo back on top again and most everyone thought they had finally worked out their third-party support issues - neither of which ended up being true.

The PS2 even had fewer launch units available than forecast, or admitted to by Sony - same as the PS3. It was a pretty negatively-viewed launch. I'm surprised people still watch console launches and think they mean anything whatsoever; all that they mean is the system is now on the market. Perceptions of the launch itself are meaningless. The GameCube and Dreamcast both had better launches than the PS2 - with more units available and a better game lineup - and they both got clubbed to death by the blunt force instrument known as the PS2 in the years following.

(The Xbox 360 also had a pretty overwhelmingly negative launch, and now some of the same people that complained about that launch are piling on Sony and recommending the Xbox 360 instead. Everybody has apparently forgotten how much of a joke that launch was.)

I myself am starting to realize the futility of trying to argue the point, though. People have a tendency to get so completely wrapped up in a particular moment and then fail to realize how quickly things can change, despite history showing again and again how often that happens. The Wii may have had a good launch, the Xbox 360 may have a big lead - neither of those things matter at all. It's kinda like assuming that whoever wins the coin toss in an overtime NFL game is going to win the game, when statistically it makes no difference.

Except you forgot all of the lost support they have endured many times over. And it really isn't worth discussing or pointing out the ability of Sony. They are the new redheaded stepchild and it's quite fashionable to hate them. Oh well, a majority of those on the Sony-hate bandwagon will end up with a PS3 and love it, like all the times before :)

Wii has got it made right now, but SONY can still make a comeback. Or pull a SEGA and screw up for the rest of the generation. DC had a decent lead at this time also, and sales slumped afterwards, killing an already crippled SEGA.
