Stella 2.3 Released...NOT YET!

Sorry bud but I think you broke the display in full screen mode.

When playing as normal, the entire viewable display is shifted several pixels up (and out of viewing area!) but when I hit the tab key to bring the menu, the display shifts to proper position but the menu screen is messed up with text off center and not on the button (see the first attached pix). When I get rid of the menu, the display shifts back up and there's some leftover garbage on the bottom of the screen (as seen in second attached pix)

This is confirmed with a few randomly selected 2600 games in full screen mode.

This fantastic Atari 2600 Emulator has been updated!

Sounds great! Unfortunately, I downloaded the Windows version and tried to install it, but during the installation it keeps saying the files are corrupt. Also, it keeps defaulting to the directory where I have 2.2 installed-- which is *not* the directory I put the installation EXE into-- so I have to keep changing it to the new directory where I want to install 2.3. :?

Trebor, there's a reason I hadn't publicly posted this release yet :)

What OS are you using, video card hardware, colour depth, and rendering mode (software or OpenGL)?

I've just downloaded it, and there's no corruption. Perhaps the server you got it from was bad. Try another one. I even installed it under Wine in Linux (notorious for crashing on corrupted Win32 stuff), and it worked fine.

Stella is meant to be upgraded from an older release, so I set the program directory to default "C:\Program Files\Stella". I suppose I could change that to "...\Stella-2.3", but I assumed most people would just be upgrading. It's not too bad to have to change the directory, I think.

Which one; there are two bugs listed??

Full-Screen. :)

Confirmed. D?!m, I don't do nearly enough testing with software mode in Windows (I always use OpenGL). To anyone else reading this thread, please don't spread word of the release until I post a message. This release wasn't supposed to be public yet (you'll notice the webpage hasn't been updated).

Sorry, stephena. As you know I am not on an beta testing team or group for Stella. I did not realize this was not a public release. It appeared to be a public release. The notification I received was from yesterday as well.

This was my fault. I must have ticked the box 'notiify users of new release' by mistake :) Anyway, no problems, but I'd appreciate not mentioning it outside the forums (or having Al post a front-page message) until we get these issues taken care of. Still, it's good to know that at least a few people are waiting eagerly for Stella :)

Is it possible for you to delete this thread? Because when I post the final release, I want to add some extra info at the top of the message. And the thread will also turn into a bug report area, and it would be confusing to have two such threads.

I was using WIndows XP SP2 pack, Geforce 5600 card, 1024x768 at 32 bit depth render: software. When I play them in windowed mode, it's all fine but when I switch to full screen and leave full screen as default, I get broken off set image and broken menu.

When I use the OpenGL mode, the full screen works just fine and the menu doesn't break. so it's a bug within software rendering.

I did download it again from a different server (Arizona instead of Minnesota), but the two downloads were exactly the same size, and the size matched the number shown on the download page, so I don't think that was it.

I wanted to preserve my 2.2 installation, and it kept defaulting to my 2.2 directory (even though I was running the install from a new 2.3 directory I'd made), so I copied my 2.2 directory and then let it (try to) go ahead and install in my 2.2 directory-- but it still said the files were corrupted. So I *deleted* everything from my 2.2 directory and tried again, that time it worked-- hence it must have been a problem with trying to unpack the files over the existing ones? (Maybe the file permissions didn't allow them to be modified and I didn't realize it?) Afterward, I renamed my old 2.2 directory to 2.3, edited the uninstall listing to change all the 2.2s to 2.3s (for if I ever run the uninstall function), and then renamed my copied 2.2 directory to 2.3-- so everything is good as far as that goes.

However, when I ran E.T. Book Cart in 2.3, I was able to set and keep the YStart setting (I change it from 34 to 15), but when I changed the Height from 210 to 240, it kept changing the Height back to 210.

I love all the changes, though-- individual phosphor blend levels for each game if desired, plus the ability to use a custom palette (haven't tried that yet), plus the support for PAL/60 (haven't tried that yet, either).

I didn't try running full-screen, as I usually run Stella in a window. I'll put it through the paces Friday night and let you know if I find anything.

I've taken the various builds offline until I get this sorted out (except for the GP2X version, which is working fine). In the meantime, you didn't have to manually create a new folder yourself. When you start the installer, one of the screens asks where you want to install Stella. By default it uses "C:\Program Files\Stella". You could specify "C:\Program Files\Stella-2.3" if you like. The reason I do it this way is that most people just do an upgrade, and if I put a new version of Stella in a different folder, they lose all their settings, snapshots, state saves, etc. The real problem is that user data shouldn't be stored in the application directory at all, and it isn't for every other port of Stella. This is something I need to work on for a future release. The problem with doing it that way is you won't be able to install multiple version of Stella at the same time. Arrggh :(

When you start the installer, one of the screens asks where you want to install Stella. By default it uses "C:\Program Files\Stella".

I know you said that before, but what I'm saying is that, by default, it came up as "C:\Atari\2600\Emus\Stella\2.2"-- which is the directory where I have version 2.2 of Stella installed. I have my directories set up as follows (this isn't all of them, just enough to give you the basic idea):

C:\Atari -- General folder for all things Atari

C:\Atari\2600 -- Folder for 2600-specific stuff

C:\Atari\5200 -- Folder for 5200-specific stuff

C:\Atari\7800 -- Folder for 7800-specific stuff

C:\Atari\800 -- Folder for 800-specific stuff

C:\Atari\2600\Emus -- Folder for Atari 2600 emulators

C:\Atari\2600\ROMs -- Folder for Atari 2600 ROM images

etc.

C:\Atari\2600\Emus\PCAE -- Folder for the PCAE emulator

C:\Atari\2600\Emus\Stella -- Folder for the Stella emulator

C:\Atari\2600\Emus\z26 -- Folder for the z26 emulator

etc.

C:\Atari\2600\Emus\Stella\2.1 -- Folder for version 2.1 of Stella

C:\Atari\2600\Emus\Stella\2.2 -- Folder for version 2.2 of Stella

C:\Atari\2600\Emus\Stella\2.3 -- Folder for version 2.3 of Stella

etc.

It appears that the Stella 2.3 installation program is somehow determining that "C:\Atari\2600\Emus\Stella\2.2" is the directory where the most recently-installed version of Stella is located, and it is defaulting to that directory. Is there an environment variable that it looks at?

When I changed the target directory to "C:\Atari\2600\Emus\Stella\2.3," the installation program didn't seem to like it. The directory was empty, so it shouldn't have had anything to do with file permissions (and I didn't check on the directory permissions, since I was able to paste files into that folder with no problems). However, I don't think I tried it again with the installation program that I downloaded from the Phoenix mirror, especially after I was able to install it into the 2.2 folder without getting error messages about the files being corrupted.

Now that's weird. I didn't know the program did that, so I can't yet say if there's a way to override it.

If I can't fix this, I think it might be better to just include a ZIP build as well as the exe. Those who want a point-and-click approach can just use the exe, and those who want a more customized installation (like yourself) can use the ZIP build, and decompress it where-ever you like.

*Please* do. I hate self-installs. I like the self customized option of an emulator zipped. Zip file for me :D
