Atari portable computer

Cool. Looks like a Ben Heck special. :D

Ben Heck's laptop was cool, but a little too much with the "burled walnut" etc... This looks like something more along the lines of a "real" Atari machine. It looks great from what I can tell. I would love to have something like this... more, more please!

Hi,

I am glad you like it :)

I call my machine the Atari 1500XL.

It is running now but has not yet all the upgrades i plan for it.

An internal mass storage device like SIO2SD, SIO2USB an/or SIO2IDE

is mandatory, 512k SRAM and stereo sound will be added, too.

The 1500XL is based on my "empty" 600XL. i needed the space above the mainboard

for the TFT controller electronics, because of the the design goal of staying as flat

as a stock XL computer. 'By accident' the outer dimensions are same as a 1200XL.

Here are some pics for you.

Dude... I expected something impressive, in an amateur sort of way. You know, just a notch above having the lcd duct-taped to the 600XL case or something. But this is absolutely awesome. I can't even figure out how you did the case, short of having some injection molds milled. It looks better than authentic, it looks like what an XL-styled laptop would look like, if we were in some weird parallel universe where Atari had made such a thing. I'm stunned.

When can I expect my NeXTBook?

Beetle, how many requests for one of these would it take for you to go into production?

Sadly I don't see any of this awesome type of work going into production, unless you had injection molds made - which would then make the cost astronomical.

By hand that's a crazy amount of work to be doing for someone else, but I'd still like one. :ponder: :D

Looks like a pair or more of 1050 case tops for the lid, the main back looks like a 600xl (make the cart port that much closer to the rear of the unit).

Incredible.

I am currently on vacation, so i cant upload new pics right now. On the back ist a stock

PAL 600XL.

The case is done by using parts of

  • 600XL
    2x800XL
    1050
    1027
    1010
    3 tubes cyanacrylate
    some 2 component polyester resin
    and a dead PC Keyboard

Pictures of the inside i will add after all is tidied up and the planned upgrades are in.
