Fell Victim To The Infamous Three Red Flashing Lights!

One thing I must add, is if you have a warranty with a retailer. I had the RROD a couple of weekends ago. I called Best Buy up (where I bought it) and asked about my warranty. They told me to bring in to them because a refurbished model would have a different serial number and therebye wouldn't be covered under the warranty I paid for. They also mentioned that I would get a new console and could keep my hard drive. So that's what I did. I ended up buying a 25' ethernet cable from monoprice.com com (for $7.21 shipped  ) because my XBLA games were all demos offline. Oh well, I did network it with my Windows Media Center PC! ;)

I honestly don't understand why everyone is so worried about this problem. Sure, its an inconvenience, but you aren't out any cash. It sucks that so many consoles are defective, but why would that be an issue to anyone as long as MS will fix them for free?

Bullshit. The damn core unit that I bought to replace a premium (which got the three rings) gave me the three rings last night. Called MS wonderful customer support and the bitch told me it was going to be $150 to fix. Shouldn't cost anything because I didn't even buy the system 9 months ago.

So fuck Xbox/MS. Listed the thing on ebay as broken and another auction for the controllers, will be selling the games soon too. Sticking with the Wii and will be getting a PS3 now.

MS extended the 360s warranty to 3 years not long ago for most issues, including the RROD:

Got my Premium fixed. No questions asked.

Yeah...I told the lady that and she said yes, but I don't "apply" for that. When I asked why, she gave me some BS reason because I called about a month ago about the system freezing up for no reason.

This defies logic. Why would they not repair a system that you bought less than 9 months ago?

I disagree, the system's design is flawed otherwise Microsoft would never have extended the warranty to three years. When you spend $400+ on a device like this, it's reasonable to expect that it will operate without problems even if you use it 24 hours a day to play games. Why should I be inconvenienced to have to disconnect and box up a system to send back to Microsoft, and then unbox it and reconnect it when I receive it back? And who knows if I'll even receive a system in the same condition, since they seem to be sending refurbished units back to people? And then you will be without the console for several days while you wait.

The only reason Microsoft is fixing them for free and extended the warranty is to stave off an inevitable class action lawsuit otherwise.

I agree with Lord Helmet. Sure, you spend money in the begining, but MS is looking out for the customers with their investment. Its not like that there saying " Take your 360, and forget it"

And I agree with Al.

The 360 is obviously seriously flawed. If a failure rate this high happened in anything else there would be a recall. This thing was never ready to go to market as designed, nor as fixed. Something is inherently VERY wrong.

My personal opinion is there was a rush to beat PS3 to the market.

My opinion aside, 30% failure rate is unacceptable. I'm also really interested in learning how exactly Microsoft get's their 5% number. Seeing as how that neither supports customer/retailer experience, nor supports the need of a 3 year warranty extention.

This thing doesn't deserve to be on the market right now as is. Thing needs to be recalled, redesigned and rereleased when ready.

I guess it's not a bad bet though - if yours blows up, just ship it back under warranty : ) You'd probably lose your save games though.

Actually you don't lose your saved games because you don't send in the hard drive with the console.......or at least you're not suppose to :P

For me, I simply don't want to deal with shipping the thing back whenever it breaks, they send me beat up refurb that breaks, repeat the process, and etc. I just don't want to deal with microsoft (when i eventually buy one).

Total BS, it's not like they have to prove whatever number they pull out of their ass..

The fuck if I know. No longer matters to me. I am done with MS as a whole, once this PC starts going, its out.

Ok, ok...I agree with you on this. I guess what I was talking about is all of the people that say things like "I'm not getting a 360 because it will just break" etc. The inconvenience sucks, and it's unacceptable that MS hasn't fixed the design flaw, but the system is still not a waste of money, because it will get fixed for free if it breaks.

I guess I'm in the middle. MS needs to fix the issue for sure though.

The shittiest thing is that there isn't a viable next gen replacement for the 360. The Wii is a different animal all together. The PS3 doesn't have the library.

Yeah, the 360 and Wii are two different beasts, both enjoyable in their own right. I have no interest whatsoever in the PS3, though. The library isn't very compelling (at present) and I don't like how Sony used the PS3 as a platform to push Blu-Ray in this stupid video format war.

No offense, but I find the tale VERY suspicious if you're telling me they didn't tell you WHY they wouldn't replace it.

I've called MS at least a half a dozen times for various reasons. I have yet to run into a situation where I've gotten off not knowing anything about the conversation I just had with them.

I suspect there is a part of this story you are leaving out.

It does suck ass that the 360 is so unrealiable.

That said, it's easily the best system available right now.

Even when the PS3 gets some decent games, they will have to be exclusives or else I'll buy the 360 version if only to try and snag the achievements (Yeah I know they aren't worth any money I just like the challenge of trying to get 100%)

It's great that they extended the warranty because it's certainly a system that needs a 3 year warranty. Whatever the reason they did it...i'm glad. I play the 360 hours a day and sometimes just let the system sit running while I'm working (I work from home) I don't give a crap if it breaks down. It'll go right back to them....then maybe the Wii and PS3 will get some use. :)

I have one of the newer 360s (with the HDMI output) and I've had problems with it outright crashing during a game, and a few times I've gotten the flashing red lights. So far simply turning the console off and on has resolved the issue, but I'm certainly not impressed. Microsoft has had two years to resolve this widespread problem and they are still selling flaky consoles. My console is sitting by itself, with nothing to interfere with airflow around it. This is the only game console I've ever had these sort of issues with. Typical Microsoft quality.

I was under the impression HDMI output systems had fixed all the problems with earlier systems ? If this is not true then when is it ok to get one ? Just seems too many issues with this flashing red lights thing.

Without a doubt.

I can say this with all honesty that the ~2 weeks I was without my 360 and jonesing for a console fix, it STILL wasn't reason enough to turn on the Wii. The PS3 got some more Motor Storming in and I picked up Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

This is what I'm talking about.

It's OK to get one NOW :)

If it breaks...send it back. No big deal.

Who knows. Not right now, that's for sure. It's obvious it's going to take a few more revisions before they start to work it out. Personaly, I'm glad I can't afford one right now. :|

Maybe we're see a change once they finally start using the 65nm chips? They are supposed to be going retail by the end of this month. To that end, it seems like Microsoft has a deal in the works for a 45nm chip, but it wont be ready till late 08/early 09. :ponder:

Phhhttt! Most of us, on sheer principle, do not want to buy something just to have to send it back half a dozen times to get a working one. ;)

The Xbox360 has so much going for it: a fantastic library of games, XBL, Marketplace, Arcade, Achievements, and more. It just a damn shame that all of this is being tainted by such an unreliable console.

And MS seems to have no idea whatsoever on how to fix the problems... two years since launch and 360's are still crapping out on a regular basis. There is a video on YouTube where a guy bought a brand new Halo Edition 360 and before he could even get all the information typed in to set up his account, the system died with the RROD.

When my 3rd console got the RROD, I sent it in for repair and decided I had had enough of dealing with the BS that MS Customer Support puts you through and the shoddy, faulty refurbs they send back out. So I went out and bought a new console and an in-store warranty and when my "repaired" 360 returned, I sold it for as much as I could get.

I **HATE** extended warranties with a passion, don't believe in them, and consider them nothing more than a money-maker for the issuer. But I decided that if I'm going to continue playing and enjoying the Xbox360 and didn't want to deal with MS-CS and refurbs, that I would have to suck-it-up and go the in-store warranty route.

If nothing else, it must be said that we Xbox360 owners are a persistant & loyal bunch. We put up with so much crap from MS and faulty consoles but we keep coming back for more and more.
