Pixelboy
Hello people! As I mentionned in my recent Sudoku thread, I want to put Sudoku on a CV cartridge as part of a 2-in-1 package, the other game being a "Memory Match-up" game called "Remember the Flag". I've begun to do some design and graphic work on this second game, and you can see an early mockup below of what the game will look like. While I'm still in the design phase, I need your opinions about a couple of points: - Since this is a ColecoVision game, should I use the old U.S.S.R. flag to promote a certain retro vibe, or should I use the newer Russian flag? Personally, I'm tempted to go with the old flag. - Do you think the inclusion of certain flags could spark controversy? I'm thinking of such examples as Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Irak, Vietnam and others. I don't see any valid reason to exclude the flags of those countries from my game, but on the other hand, I wouldn't want to receive negative comments from, shall we say, politically sensitive people... Thanks in advance for your input.
ten-four
I'm a Dane you know. But when we are moving in to a political area, we should be carefully, even when we think it was meant for fun. There are people out there can feel themself hurt in a way, and it can wake up some feelings, -maybe from the past. So i think you should use the newer Russian flag, because it's close to Holland, and France in their colors. That would also get the game a kind a difficulty. But of course you decide... EDIT: misspelling. Edited June 8, 2008 by ten-four
Pixelboy
Alright, here's my list of flags so far. Most of them use tiles only, while a few use a combination of tiles and sprites. I don't even know if I'll be able to include them all in my game, so my previous questions might have been moot points.
ten-four
Nice job Luc. Look forward to see a playable demo in the future.
+thegoldenband
This is based on the board game "Match II", right? I have fond memories of playing that as a kid, and it taught me a few things. Somalia's flag was always easy to remember!
Pixelboy
This is based on the board game "Match II", right? I have fond memories of playing that as a kid, and it taught me a few things. Somalia's flag was always easy to remember! Match II? A pure coincidence, I'm afraid. I came up with the idea myself, but I'm not surprised that it's been done before in boardgame format. Country flags lend themselves naturally to a game like this. This is the first time I've seen or heard of this board game. Honest! I'm planning to include some interesting extra features, namely a solitaire mode (fail to make a valid match more than a certain number of times in a row and you lose) as well as some special flags that affect the scoreboard in the two-player game. These range from simple "+2" bonus points to a magnet that allow a player to steal points from the other. But the most important feature is the "connection bonus". See those "!" covers in the screenshot above? These replace the "?" covers when matches are made by the players. When a player manages to make rows of "!" covers (either horizontally, vertically or diagonally), in a Tic-Tac-Toe fashion, he/she earns extra points. All these extra features can be disabled in the options screen, of course.

I'm honored that you chose my thread to post your 1000th, double! Funny you'd mention a country anthem, because when a successful flag match is made in my game, the first few notes of that flag's country anthem will be played. P.S.: Whatever happened to that full-featured ADAM power supply you were working on?

Been a bit side-tracked with work and real life hogging all my time and haven't had a lot of time or ambition for any video game work. I'll get back to it eventually along with my Super Action Arcade Stick I started god knows how long ago.

The new Russian flag looks like a sideways French flag.
