Toucan
Thanks for the pics. Here's some TI-99 screen shots for the same games/some different ones. These are all on cartridges, as I don't think many here would be interested in seeing the disk games on the TI since usually only the cartridges are the collectables. Artlover
Wow. All these screen shots looked great. That was a very capable little system, wasn't it. I do have one question tho. In Dig-Dug, why the heck isn't Pooka red?

In Dig-Dug, why the heck isn't Pooka red? No idea. I can only guess that maybe the color somehow conflicted with something? If you want to see more neat TI things, check out the MBX Page. It has some really neat games for it (they are listed toward the bottom of the page with links to them). JamesD
CoCo 1 & 2. Most are unauthorized clones. Gameplay may have some different twists over the original. The standard colors aren't very attractive but the artifacted colors can be pretty good. And gameplay was pretty good. The screens look very similar to the MSX. Were there any more game emulators made for the CoCo3 aside from Donkey Kong? Seems to me there could/should have been numerous arcade emu adaptations if it is strong enough to handle DK. Well, MSX should actually look more like the TI 99/4 seeing as how they have the same graphics chip or a variation of. The CoCo 1/2 wasn't exactly spectacular color wise. The 6847 is an older chip. It does have a mode with all the colors available but they aren't as high res as the 2 color and 4 color modes. At least one game, Dragonfire, changed color modes on the fly to display more than 4 colors on screen at once. The CoCo 3 has a 64 color palette with up to 16 colors on screen at once... more if you change the colors on the fly. It looks a lot like the 32 color or half bright mode images on the Amiga. The original CoCo 3 design was supposed to include a 256 color mode and improved sound but Tandy axed that so the CoCo wouldn't compete with their PC line. JamesD
Were there any more game emulators made for the CoCo3 aside from Donkey Kong? Seems to me there could/should have been numerous arcade emu adaptations if it is strong enough to handle DK. Well... I'm not quite sure I'd call it an emulator myself. I believe DK graphics were character based so I imagine that's what is emulated. Blits of graphics blocks that were character generator based. The gameplay code was ported. It was clearly capable but Tandy wasn't easy to deal with and wouldn't carry their software in Radio Shack stores. Without the stores where the machines are sold carrying the software companies didn't want to support it. If the machine had been marketed outside Radio Shack stores I don't think there would have been a problem. BTW, here is what the CoCo 1/2 artifacting was capable of. These pics look like they were done with an emulator so the colors don't blend quite as well as the real thing but pretty close. http://nitros9.lcurtisboyle.com/sandsofegypt.html And here is what you could expect from some of the poorer looking games: http://nitros9.lcurtisboyle.com/monkeykong.html http://nitros9.lcurtisboyle.com/spaceassault.html I played Space Assault a lot even though it wasn't pretty. BTW, no matter how you want to compare the two machines... the CoCo outlasted the TI so in a way, it already won the contest.

nathanallan
I have another TI on the way(this one will work okay) and a mess of games also. I never got to use this one growing up, my schools and libraries went with Apples. Still good, but I would have liked the experience as a child. Chomping at the bit over here. Also, my other one is broken and needs a new keyboard (I'll try to clean this one). Any links for parts? Nathan

Also, my other one is broken and needs a new keyboard (I'll try to clean this one). Any links for parts? Nathan Nate, I have an extra TI99, you want it? Pay for shipping and it's yours It does not have power supply or anything else but it does work, I tested it.

newcoleco
Someone here talked about a game named Parsec for the TI99/4a? I think Parsec should exist for the ColecoVision. Is there a ti99 homebrewer here? Which cool game did you do for the computer TI99/4a?
darthkur
I think Parsec should exist for the ColecoVision. I think that would be great. I'm not sure how the voice would translate but everything else should be doable.

AtariLeaf
The coco3 was an incredible machine for its time but as mentioned, it was purposefully cripped to boost sales in the other Tandy lines. The homebrew scene shows exactly how well the coco3 could handle games:

As far as voice goes there's the game Squish 'Em Sam that has fairly good voice samples. Whether that was achieved through the CV itself or with a specific chip in the cartridge itself is unknown. To me anyways.
JamesD
I finally broke down and bought a TI 99/4A off of ebay. I've had a box of games for several years but never bought a machine until now.
+remowilliams
Tunnels of Doom still kicks ass as one of the best games ever made - finished my ironman Hero playthrough, yeah!
Dr. Van Thorp
The coco3 was an incredible machine for its time but as mentioned, it was purposefully cripped to boost sales in the other Tandy lines. A not uncommon practice; Commodore had an enhanced BASIC ready for the C-64, but instead reused the old PET basic out of fear that the C-64 would steal the market from a more expensive machine in the planning stages. Even more recently, Intel sold a hobbled Pentium called the Celeron, and used the weak Celeron's price as a justification for charging more for the Pentium, which had the same manufacturing cost. Stupid, stupid marketing people.
JamesD
Goddamn!!!!!!!!!!.TI Super Demon Attack looks friggin awesome!!! ,and coco Dragonfire...WOW!!!!.I'm not familiar with these systems, but judging by the games here, they seem KICKASS!!!!!!!!!! Dragonfire is the only cart that I'm aware of for the CoCo that switched color modes on the fly. You'll notice that the color mode switches on even byte boundaries. In this case 8 colors are displayed with no artifacting. Sadly, the limited number of screens on Dragonfire limits the entertainment value. The interrupt timing is different on the CoCo3 so the color changes in different places on it unless you use a patched version of the game. What I'm trying to figure out is how some TI games have blinky sprites and others don't. Blinky isn't just a ghost's name in PAC MAN. GreenDayRlz
The Coco `s can be made to have GREAT looking games if you a good programer. The Coco 3`s 256 color mode IS in there somewhere I thinK. It has been documented on "The inside" of the company. And 16 colors is all you need look at defender and stargate. You can`t beat that. And Coco`s game are awsome, Except for the BAD clones....
