Nathanallan - Are you interested in clear plastic parts because you'd like to have lighting underneath them? Or do you just like the way the transparent plastic looks?

If you had any pics or links to images of something you think looks good we might be able to figure something out.

If you just wanted clear plastic in general the 3rd party replacement cases would probably be the easiest/cheapest route.

With either of those systems it would be possible to make a design/window in the system itself, thus making parts of it transparent and/or could be lit up with LED lighting.

DaytonaUSA - I haven't had a chance to work on a Panasonic Q yet. Although I did have someone ask me something along these lines awhile back that I was looking into. It seemed like information was somewhat hard to find. I remember finding some remote codes that seemed like possible "urban legends" that "may or may not" work. Seemed pretty odd to me.

Do you have any info/links in reference to this? If you've got some info on it I'll look into it and see what I can come up with.

wood_jl - I haven't gotten the chance to work on any of Atari's 8bit computers yet, but I'd be willing to look into it :) If you have any links/info regarding the work that would make research much quicker for me.

Thanks everyone!

All I know is that there is a company online that once did them, that is very reputable, that is willing to do it for me as a special thing since I politely asked. I figured though, if you knew what to do, I'd give my business to an AA member first. But it's ok if you've never tried before, no worries.. I want it to go to someone who knows what to do, and I don't want to be the guinea pig ;). I'll take what pics I can to show you what they did to get the DVD disks and JAP GC disks to work though when I get it back.

Sounds good.

I found one of the links I have saved awhile back when this was brought up and it references using a "Panasonic Service Disk 2" to make the Q region free. There was a place that offered to "lend" you the disc for something like 35 pounds that people mentioned too. Apparently in Australia and some other countries people were lucky enough to get the service disk from Panasonic.

Do you mind me asking what company it is?

As for the clear plastic, I'll buy third party if I could find them. I can do windows and things myself, don't need those. But a totally clear plastic disk cover for a PS1 or DC, those I have not been able to find. If you can point the way, I'll get them.

Both for LED lighting and just in general cool looks.

NCSX. They offered a burned version of that disk your talking about, but not anymore. The chip mod they do does both game and dvd disk region functions. I'll be sending mine in soon.

Just want to add a suggestion mod to your arsenal.

I have been requested and performed internal speaker mods into Atari 2600's. I'm sure more people would want them, as it is a really neat feature to have, especially on light sixers.

I have a quick question or 2, I see you do NES work but could you do a AV mod for a Famicom? Also do you do any repairs on Neo Geo CD (top loader) I have one that doesn't read cds it tries to for about 4 sec then it just stops and does nothing. Or even if you know someone that does do these thing it would be a great help.

Nathanallan - I haven't come across any totally clear disc covers that any companies have made.

It would be possible to custom make them, as I'm very slowly getting into some slight plastic fab and have some initial quick ideas, but it would be somewhat time consuming and it's still down the road a ways for me. I'll keep this in mind if I start playing around in my "free time" one of these days...

holygrailvideogames - Thanks for the kind words! What needs to be repaired on your Astrocade?

I'm really open to work on any system: console, portable, arcade hardware, superguns, dedicated consoles, custom consoles/clone systems, etc. As long as I can get my brain wrapped around the work required, or can find some documentation online to look at I'm game :D

DaytonaUSA - I see, thanks. It sounds like they're installing a preprogrammed IC. This is how many of the somewhat "newer" mods are being done now. I will eventually get around to offering these types of services but it will still be awhile.

keilbaca - Sounds fun! I definitely hadn't thought about that one yet. Got any R&D pointers for me?

ckrtech - Hey THANKS :D I came up with those myself and thought they looked pretty nice. I like trying random ideas and those two were just such. I'm also going to do a similar mod with several other systems in the near future.

cubejunky - Sure, I'm game for pretty much any system. I'd need to look over some of my papers, but I'd say it would be right about the same price as pretty much all my standard AV mods - $30.

As per the NGCD, here are a few questions to help further diagnose the problem:

* Have you had the unit for awhile or did you just buy it?

* Did the problem just suddenly occur one day or has this been a gradual issue?

* Make sure you're using the appropriated rated PSU. I believe the different models used different ratings.

* Have you tested multiple games (and not cdrs)?

* Does the system seem to boot up and run regularly until you put a game in? (power light comes on, no odd noises, etc.)

Most likely it's either that the laser lens needs adjustment, or it could just be worn out from use. My first thought would be to try and calibrate the potentiometer on the laser lens. Hopefully it just needs some loving :)

* Have you had the unit for awhile or did you just buy it?

I bought it about a yr ago.

* Did the problem just suddenly occur one day or has this been a gradual issue?

it just occurred one day, when I bought it, it worked for a day (got it from a friend) but then it just stopped.

* Make sure you're using the appropriated rated PSU. I believe the different models used different ratings.

As far as I know it's all the right/original equipment.

* Have you tested multiple games (and not cdrs)?

Yes I have tried 4 different games none of witch are cdrs, all originals 2 from US and 2 from JP.

* Does the system seem to boot up and run regularly until you put a game in? (power light comes on, no odd noises, etc.)

The system runs fine it doesn't make any weird noises the power light lights up and it brings you to the main menu, it doesn't crash or freeze it just wont read games even when it is trying to read games it doesn't sound weird no grinding noises or anything.

Yeah, one main thing.

Get a sound driver that is small, even if you have to make it yourself, and use flat speakers. I did one using sony speakers (I need to look up the model number on my other computer), and its really hard stuffing everything into the case.

Great. I'll see if I can get a minute to open one up and take a few pictures of what I want you to look at. It would probably be easiest that way. Basically you'll be opening the unit and then turning a small phillips head screw that's located on the laser assembly.

It's very important that you mark your starting position and that you only make about 1/8th of a turn adjustments at a time in between testing the unit.

Kaze, its a really easy mod. You use the exact same points on the board to pick up the sound from the audio/video mod. Then you just solder the power directly to the 9v line or 5v line, depending on the speakers, then just put a switch in between the ground. *really* easy mod.
