jaysmith2000 Posted August 11, 2005 Share Posted August 11, 2005 Greetings, From reading through information it seems that the 1450xld's out there do not have actual 1450xld nametags on them, but are blank or tagged with a 1200xl. Mine actually has the original tag on it. Am I misinformed about the nametags for these? Here's a link to my site with a pic of the 1450xld. video game addict Posted August 11, 2005 Share Posted August 11, 2005 There's a stock photo of one in the Dec 83 Electronic Games magazine, it clearly has 1450xld name tag, although, it could have been a photoshop deal back in the day from a 1200.. if you look really closely you can see the L1 L2 leds above the tag, which are on the 1200xls. Not on your unit though. What's all that gunk around that tag & start button? Is it glue or epoxy from when they applied the tag? Your disk drive is a 1050 mech and not the Epson mech which was used in the functional 1450XLD's that had working disk controllers... Very few 1450XLD's had name tags, I have 2 without, and the full Tong unit with working drives has a 1450XLD (or is it 1450XL) name tag... I'll have to check... Did you know the Atarti 1400XL was actually called the Atari 1201XL? Curt Vendel Posted August 11, 2005 Share Posted August 11, 2005 DON'T use a standard XL/XE power supply, the first thing you'll do is blow out the video circuits on a 1400XL or 1450XLD... You can take an off the shelf PC power supply, wire up an 8 pin DIN plug and use that to power your XLD... I doubt your systems disk drive works, but hey, you never know.... quick way to check is to use a flashback, look through the back vents and see if you can see a small daughterboard card plugged ontop of the motherboard inside and a cable going from it to the disk drive -or- on the off chance you may have a TONG motherboard, you'll see the cable plugged right into the motherboard itself. Otherwise you'll have to open the case and have a look inside, this way is the quicker and easier route. Curt Hey Curt! Does this mean my system's drive won't work? Any working 1450XLD is gonna cost you a lot of money anymore. When I collected prototypes, the price would double every few years it seems. I've attached pictures of the insides. It definitely has a daughter board, but it's a big one! Would this be the first one you've seen with 1050 mechanism that is a functional drive? Curt Vendel Posted September 11, 2005 Share Posted September 11, 2005 Hi Jayson, The motherboard is a standard 1450xl type, that daugtherboard is odd, looks like a parallel version of a dual 1050 controller board, versus using the standard disk drives (later use of Epson disk drives) Most likely its either an earlier controller board design or a side-project design where engineers looked to use existing 1050 mech's in the design. Good idea in practice obviously, however, unless the firmware is updated, the question begs to be answered, are the drives 127K's or full 360K drives... Contact me off-line, I'd like you to ship out the unit, and let me power it up and lets get some more answers to this beastie, plus I would like to dump the eproms as well. Powered it up and it is fully functional including the floppy drive. The floppy works better than my other 2 1050's that's for sure. I don't think it has seen a lot of use.
