The 1450XLD fake thread

Hi there,

Can anyone help me? I got this really nice old PC at the flea market on Sunday.

I cleaned it up and it says it is an Atari 1200XL. I don't really know what that is.

It didn't have a VGA output but a TV cord was included. In one of the disk drives

was a DOS disk, but it is version 2.0. It didn't work so I got out the DOS Disk

for my old PC. My disk is version 6.22, but it doesn't work either.

I think it's the last one you can get on 5.25" disk. It is supposed to work,

but it doesn't on my Atari.

I just get this nice colored Atari BIOS Logo. I am not able to get into the

BIOS setup. I did a search on Google to see if I could find out how, and I can't

find anything at all. Does anyone know which key I have to press?

Is there a way to hook up a CD-ROM drive and an NIC?

I will post a picture of this little desktop computer.

Thanks in advance,

Atarinoob

Holy crap. That's actually a 1450 XLD.

Super-rare, what did you pay for it?

The Atari 8-bit machines aren't IBM compatible. They use a proprietry disk format.

You should just put the disk in the drive then power on the computer for it to boot DOS.

Also, I think that machine doesn't have BASIC built in so you might need to grab it on cartridge.

Finally, more pictures would be appreciated.

where did you swipe the picture from ?

As Rybags said, Atari 1200 (or 1450) xl's aren't pc comaptible so you can't use crappy ms/pc dos with it you have to use something called 'Atari Dos'

Also you can't you a standard modern pc monitor with an atari 1200/1450 unless you are competent in building yourself an extension cable that goes from the connector that goes into the pc end and building a cable witha connector thaty goes into your atari

So you are better of getting yourself a nice portable tv, get yourself a cable that plugs into the rf/tv socket at the atari and tv end

please note, unless you are from the US, you might not be able to do anything with it as 1200/1450 where only made for the US market (no pal/secam models are known to exist) as the machine probably comes with a NTSC/US pSU (which you'll have to swap over for a PAL/Secam psu, if your not from the states)

Also, as the system is NTSC only, you will need to get yourself a portable tv or television that is multi format compatible (i.e PAL/NTSC) or you'll get the wrong colours and everything will be in shades of grey

Apart from that, if this ISNT some april fools joke...well done on your find

I got a plastic bag with some stuff along the computer.

A cable to the TV's composite input was included. Works so far.

I do have a BASIC cartridge.

I now get a blue editor screen thats shows "READY"

Some keys do not work :(

I take pictures with my Ricoh R4 cam, here is another.

The label says "1200XL"

The label says so indeed. But it must be false then. The machine is 1450XLD. I don't know exactly, how many complete units were produced, but maybe 20 or 30 perhaps. So it is rather hard to find stuff, you know :)

The original labels on 1400XL and 1450XLD are sometimes missing, so maybe someone has "fixed" it using the label from the standard 1200XL (not a rare computer). Here: http://atariki.krap.pl/images/d/d8/1200xl-main.jpg is a photo of a _real_ 1200XL, it differs from yours quite a bit.

BTW. The 1450XLD is so rare that it is hard to believe you're not making fools here.

Judging by the low numbers made, it's entirely possible that many parts never made it past the proto stage, so using a 1200XL label just to finish the machine would be entirely feasible.

Some keys don't work? You mean the normal alpha-numerics?

Or, the function keys? Start, Select, Option don't do anything unless a program specifically checks them. F1-F4 are used for screen blank, disable keyboard, switch character set, turn screen on/off.

The power supply is not the original one, but a modified internal PC ps.

I googled for 1450XLD, found some pics of it, and yes they look like mine.

I liked the design and wanted to throw a modern AMD based PC into it,

but if it's so rare as you say, i'll preserve it in the setup it is now.

Do you think $125 plus giving a working PSone was a good deal?

$125 + a PS1 is a bargain.

I have no idea what they're worth but would have to be among the rarest computers ever made.

By the looks of it, it's barely ever been used.

Is it able to boot that DOS disk? Provided the correct drive is online, you should at least be getting a BOOT ERROR message.

Wohoo!

I assumed it would try both drives. I put the disk into the right drive and it booted!

At least it accessed the drive and made some "tock tock tock " noise.

But i reach the same "READY" as before. What to do now?

And thanks for your help! You are so nice here on atariage.

Type DOS

Should come up with the DOS menu.

Just make sure you don't format your boot floppy, since I'm assuming you don't have any other Atari disks.

What we need to do now is get you an APE interface so you can use the PC as an emulated drive and run downloaded stuff...

... and a dump of your OS ROMs would be nice to have a look at too.
