Atari History Book Cover Contest

Exciting news guys -

We've decided to run an open contest to allow Atari fans to help out with the book by designing the book's cover. Here's the contest info:

1) The contest runs from now until the end of March. It's open to anyone, not just AtariAge readers.

2) The winner will be decided by myself and Curt and announced publicly. Though you're all welcome to weigh in on your favorites.

3) The prizes are your name in the book (credit for the cover), a signed copy of the book, an "I Helped Make Atari History" bumper sticker, and direct input on the visual style of the book (layout of text, fonts, borders, page graphics, etc.)

4) Submissions can be here or through our email account ataribook@gmail.com.

The cover should be based around the following content guidelines:

Title: Silicon Hot Tube
Byline: How Innovative Leisure Created The Video Game Industry, And How Excess Almost Destroyed It
Authors: Marty Goldberg, Curt Vendel
Theme: Centered around the title and byline. Look should reflect the 1970's through early 80's and should not include any Atari products.

We're looking for something that's going to pop out on the store shelves while summing up the content of what the book entails: The exciting formation of an high tech entertainment industry and the stories behind all the people that did it, all during the "me decade" of the 70's to the pop culture icon status of the early 80's.

Attached is a simple concept I threw together for illustrative purposes only. It does not represent the "pop" we're looking for and is only to show a basic example of content and layout within the guidelines.

I have a CyberTech S-Video modded system and was wondering if anyone knows the best way to adjust the pots to get the colors, brightness, etc dialed in.

I have been using the recent LHE and bB mods, but dug this out to do a visual comparison of all the s-video mods. I will post pics of the screens when I am done, but need to make sure I have the CyberTech calibrated as best I can with the adjustments available.
Thanks!

Related topic: best way to clean the NES connector?

I really don't like how these replacement connector pins for the NES work, and I'm going to try cleaning the original part. I've read a bunch of posts but most deal with the carts, not the connector.

What would you suggest?...some contact cleaner spray? I'm wondering how to get in there to put some pressure on the pins without damaging them, but also ensuring no remaining residue is left.

Since there's plastic and metal, I guess a soak in contact cleaner might damage the plastic...any tips?

NEO GEO console project

Yet another NEO GEO MVS in custom case.

The project took around 1 year to complete. At first I did not know how I wanted to be done, should it be in cabinet, or coffee table, bar top or console.
Finally I decided that I want to make console type, for space reasons.
Then I had to decide how I will make it, that took forever to finalize.
And last, getting all the parts and pieces.
The frame is done with wood, and top and bottom plates are aluminum, painted with "flat" black enamel.
The gamepad is made from very old PC gamepad. I gutted the electronics and wired it per NeoGeo pin-outs.

But now it's done, my very own NeoGeo Arcade.

Regarding killing the used games market...

Hi there!

Here's a thought I'd like to hear your opinions on, just some silly math based on heavy guessing of mine...

=========

Assuming a good game sells 2 Million copies, 1 million of which get sold used.

Now the standard bigger, better, more sequel comes out, that is bought by let's say 80% of people who liked the first.

That would be 2.4 Million copies

Now after killing the used game market

That would be only 1.6 Million copies

=========

Maybe I'm missing something essential here, but how will companies manage to ever grow a franchise once they limit their target audience for a sequel to just the people that bought the first game? As I see it they'd be just cutting their own flesh in the long run...

Greetings,
Manuel

Support New Double Fine Classic Point-and-Click Adventure!

www.tinyurl.com/doublekick

Now you can support Double Fine and Tim Schafer "develop Double Fine's next game, a classic point-and-click adventure. Where it goes from there will unfold in real time for all the backers to see."

According to Joystiq, it only took 8 hours and 11 minutes for Double Fine to reach their Kickstarter goal of $400,000 ($300K to make the new game and $100K to support the chronicling of the entire process). As of the time that I post this on AtariAge, total support is now $544,459, and doesn't appear to be slowing down.

For a contribution of $15, You will get "The finished game in all of its awesome glory on Steam, exclusive access to the PC Beta on Steam, access to the video series, and access the private discussion community.". Higher contributions carry with it additional premium rewards.

Even just the $15 contribution is well worth the price in order to experience a new Tim Schafer/Ron Gilbert adventure game. Check out the cool 'feelies' for the higher contribution levels. But that $15 also gets you a back-stage pass into the whole creative/production process that occurrs during game development. And from reading the Kickstarter page (and seeing the video....definitely don't pass by the video, it's hillarious!) this will be a 'real' documentary on the making of this game, well beyond just a vi-doc series.

So check it out!

Hi there.
I am thinking to import a NTSC Colecovision, but since we use 220v i think the powersupply with the system, wont work, I could buy a step-down converter - but is it hard to modify the power supply to work on 220v or better to buy a new powersupply and make it from scratch ? another problem might be the tv-output from the Colecovision, since my tv are PAL. But newer tv's should support both NTSC and PAL and also work in 50 and 60 hz mode.

Which is the toughest of The Big Three?

After reading a lot of posts, I've come to the conclusion that many agree that three of the toughest games on the NES (tough yet beatable) are:

Ghosts n' Goblins
Ninja Gaiden
Battletoads

I've beaten two, but Battletoads still eludes me. I personally think it's the hardest one...at least in the other two, you get unlimited continues. If Toads only had that, it would be in the same category as the others...repetition, repetition. Eventually you'll beat it.

GnG was very, very difficult back in the day. Now, it's tough but only in terms of the clunky game mechanics. I'd say that a game like Gradius is actually more difficult, skill-wise. But beating GnG only to find out you had to do it all over again?...I think I just quit back in the 80s.

So, I'd add two more: Punch-out and Gradius. I've never beat Mike Tyson, but who knows....maybe one day! Gradius gets a bit easier with practice but you need a good streak of luck too...far more challenging that any shooter on the NES I know of, other than the ridiculous Cybernoid.

What do you think?

Let's Talk Burgertime (Burgertime Appreciation)

I thought i'd start a thread to praise the great game of Burgertime and maybe get a couple odd questions answered.

I'm a big fan of Burgertime. It is my favorite game of all time. I may not be the best but i love it. I own quite a few versions of it. Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, Atari 7800 (Beef Drop), Nes, PS1 (Arcade port), GB (Burgertime Deluxe), GBC (Burgertime in Bedrock). I am not completely obsessed with the game since i do love other games as well.

And i am not out to collect every version in the world but i do like to pick up different versions every once in a while. I would love to own the actual arcade cabinet.

Ok maybe i am slightly obsessed since i do have a Burgertime Clock coming in the mail. lol
And a few other Burgertime related items that i will do a video of and post them here when i get them.
Isn't that sweet looking?
eBay Auction -- Item Number: 370427446478

Ok down to the questions. I noticed there is a PS2 version of Burgertime only released in Japan as seen here eBay Auction -- Item Number: 270892466523
I am real curious to know if it is the same exact port as the one they released on the PS1 (Arcade's Greatest Hits Midway Collection 2). Especially control wise. The controls for the PS1 version was horrid. Just as bad as the Nes version which has awful ladder/level detection where you have to be right on the mark or your screwed. I wonder if that PS2 version has Analog support. The PS1 does not. I also tried using the PS1 Arcade Stick as well the Nes Advantage on that port and neither helped.

On a side note i thought the controls were not that much better on the Mame version i tried once. But that was some time ago. Plus i was using a real old Side Winder controller i bought somewhere around 2000 or 2001. The Dpad is not good on it at all.

So another question i have is, how well does the actual arcade control compared to the home ports? I have never had the chance to play the actual arcade machine. How is the ladder/level detection? I know from experience that the Intellivision, Colecovision and even Beef Drop have super smooth controls with no ladder detection problems whatsoever. Are the Arcade controls just as smooth or did they improve on the controls when they ported them to consoles? And maybe i shouldn't be comparing the Mame controls to the real thing?

Yes i know i'm long winded.

Powerpak, Harmony Cart: thoughts on these?

I'm about to pull the trigger on these NES and Atari mulitcarts. I'm just wondering if there's anything that members here would like to add about them, from experience? The Powerpak looks to be a good product and there's tons of games I'd like to try on the NES but don't really want to get the physical carts. From most reviews, the Harmony cart (or is it Cuttle, I can't remember now, the recent one available) looks very much worth it.

I've already got a Coleco Mulitcart, and I'm very happy with it (other than I bought it right before they released the SD cart version).

Any tips?

Very simple to learn, not simple to win lol. You have no inventory to manage, aside from the lower corner, you only have what you wear/are holding. It’s entirely played with the mouse.
