Now what's this all about?
* I've never moved my Wii while a game is loaded or running.
* I've never left my Wii on for long periods except when playing VC, and the disc doesn't spin during.
* I've never left my Wii on for more than a few hours in general anyway according to date/time logs.
So I'm websurfing with the Internet Channel and I get a call that my car's out of the shop. I figure okay, cool, I turn off the TV and leave the Wii on. I come back an hour or 90 minutes later, eat lunch, yadda yadda let's say it was idle for a couple hours on for maybe 3-4 total - about typical for me anyway. Since Sonic and the Secret Rings is already loaded I figure what the hell let's play for a bit. Now mind you here's two more things worth noting about me.
* I'm a clean freak. I hate buying disc games used because they're almost always scratched, so I only do it when I have to, and generally with brand new consoles I don't have to since all the games are available brand new anywhere at Target, Best Buy, you name it.
* I never unload or load a disc with greasy or dirty hands. I challenge any man woman or child alive to find a thumbprint on any discs I own, because I always load them by holding the center spindle and the edge. I've never ever "grabbed" a disc.
I start the game up and work on finishing the first set of page, the one where they teach you all the tilt dash and jump moves, as I had only gotten through 2-3 the last time before I had to shut it down and take the Mrs. to a dental appointment. Once I get through the eighth and final page of the chapter and level up there's a cut scene about the Erazor Jinn. At first the dialogue breaks up a little and I go "Huh, that's weird." Then the screen freezes a couple of times. I go "Huh, I remember my original PlayStation did that during Final Fantasy 9 when the drive started dying." Then I get something I never thought I would see on a brand new console ever:
BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH.

WHAT THE #%@! IS GOING ON?!!?!
Out of all the people in the world this should happen to, it's not me. I fucking take care of my shit, treat it with kid gloves, hell my Wii has never even so much as left the desk it sits on or the stand it's mounted in, and to my naked eye there's not a scratch on the Sonic disc nor
SHOULD there be considering it's a brand new game and only been out of the shrinkwrap for about a week.
Advice, anyone? How long should I leave the Wii off before trying again? I dread calling Nintendo for repairs because (1.) I wouldn't get my Wii back for who knows how long and (2.) They'd probably end up wiping all my saved game data and Virtual Console games in the process and (3.) Who says they wouldn't just replace it with a new or refurbished unit anyway, to the same effect?
I'm pissed now.
