Red Steel and Meal Slug Anthology. I was seriously afraid of Red Steel after hearing all about it. So i put Metal Slug in first. And I have to say I had a blast. I havent played any metal slug other than the import one on my Saturn, so it was a blast playing through Metal Slug 1 and 6 tonight (6 is amazing btw, love the character selection option). So if you havent picked that up yet, its work the 39.99.. much more so than other games for that price, like Ant Bully or Barnyard.

So then comes Red Steel.. the bastard child of bad control shooters from what i heard. So i start to play once i set up the game, has nice illustrations totally made cheesy by putting it in flash and make them move unnaturally. Still, after playing Elebits, the voice acting is VERY respectable and believable. ANywho, onto the most important part.. the shooting. So i try to aim.. and it looks like my arm just got poison ivy on it.. its twitching everywhich way.. ceiling floor all around. I tough it..

I start to go on, opening doors, fine, zooming in, wel.. other than looking like an idiot looking like hes reaching toward the tv, fine. THe sword fighting is even acceptable, and im doing it like a pro, even the parry which was bitched at saying that it never registered in reviews. well i can tell you them must have been shaking the remote , not the nunchuck cuase it works every time. Anywho, i start getting addicted the pretty graphics and metroid like cooridors shooting people left and right. I start to realize, wait... im actually doing somewhat decent here. Yes, after a short level or two, you WILL get the hang of the controller pretty well, and its really immersive, and im kicking myself for returning this game origina;lly to get Elebits.

I played through 16% of the game in one night tonight, which .. btw.. is a BIG portion of gaming.. my wrist, well.. is very sore. Its a challenge, not cause you cant turn like they said, or aim like they said.. but becuase the game is just challenging, but you can always start from the last checkpoint.. and youll do it often. But its fun, its actually challenging thank god. IM used to games like SW Battlefront 2 where i feel like the computers dont even realize thier holding blasters.

Overall, the controll is perfect, its a linear shooter, so needing to turn around anyway fast is not really needed, even though your turn speed is pretty good anyway. the "loading cooridoors" scream metroid, and its a really immersive envinment. So difficulty, flash animation in the story, and learning curve aside, i dont get what all the hoo ha was about on this game. Im really glad i got this instead of Far Cry tonight. Just goes to show you that reviews arent always to be trusted.. i just lost out of over a month of could be game play, pick it up.

Nice post!!

Like you, I've been playing and enjoying the heck out of Red Steel. I like the story, I like the "comic book" cut-scenes, I like the music & atmosphere, voice acting is good... heck, I just like the game!

Only problem I've had with the game is the Sword fights. From my experience the Wii-mote doesn't always register all my moves. For example, I might make 3 slashes at my opponent but only one or two slashes will happen on the screen. Sometimes all my movements will be perfectly re-created onscreen but then sometimes only 50% or less of the movements will happen. I rarely do any special moves during sword fights, as I have found that simple "parrying - dodging - 2 or 3 quick slashes - repeat" will usually get me thru a fight. As for parrying, I've never had a problem with it as it works every time for me.

The only other problem I've had with the game is learning new sword attacks at the dojo. I can't always figure out what the hell Wii-mote/Nunchuk movements they want me to perform to pull off a new move. In Excite Truck, they show you a picture of what movement is required PLUS they tell you in text exactly what to do. In Red Steel they only show you a picture of what you are to do and sometimes I just can't figure out if they are saying "twist up" or "twist sideways" or "twist at an angle" or "move both at the same time" or what. Others may not have any problems with learning new attacks but for me its been a real pain trying to figure out some (not all) of the movements I'm to perform to use a special move.

Overall, I really like Red Steel and think "rumors" of bad controls - bad graphic's - etc may have given it a very much undeserved reputation.

yea if the beautiful bump mapping and refections are "bad" graphics, i wonder how the other wii games got good graphical scores, this is in a differnt league and I was pleasantly suprised.

I havent had any trouble with the sword YET< but i havent gotten into the dojo, so i dont know about the more complex moves.

THere is one thing that is REALLY hard, when your chasing that car through the parking garage through multiple levels and its shouting objectives that are like 2 paragraphs long and you have a very limited time frame. I had to have my roomate become my narrator while i shot at everyone.

Thanks for the compliment, im tired of harsh reviews like this. And it reminds me why for a long time i just didnt read reviews and went with my gut. Just wanted someone "real" out there that wasnt on EA's paycheck to tell you Ubisoft's shooter was good. Even my roomate who says that the "only games hed buy that are out right now are DBZ and Zelda" admitted hed probably give at least an 8.0 on the game. For a guy who doesnt see the beauty of racing games or shooters, thats a compliment i think.

Im one of the people who laughed when i heard they were making Red Steel 2... now Im hoping i beat this game first before it comes out. haha

I too like Redsteel, and disagree with you just as much about the bad reviews. I got my Wii this last Friday by luck and immediately went to Best Buy to pick up this game along with Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (because I was addicted to the ones for the cube)

The next day I made some trades at the local EB Games for a couple more Wii games. I ended up buying Elebits and Madden, and as I was checking out the guy asked me what other games I bought. When I mentioned Redsteel he told me to bring it back to him if it hadn't been opened to swap for another game because it is real horrible. I told him I bought it at Best Buy, but he said it didn't matter. He pointed to the five used copies he had on the shelf and said "see? If this is the only used Wii game I have, that tells you it's horrible."

This pissed me off more than anything, so I went home, opened Red Steel and popped it in. I did agree that the controls are kind of glitchy, but like Atari Jr. said earlier, you get used to it after the first couple of levels and it really isn't that bad. All the blocking, aiming, zooming, picking up items, etc controls work fine. I am past the part where you have to chase the car in the parking garage, but not much further. I do like the mix between sword fighting and gun slinging.

i will admit, there was one level , like 2 after the car garage one where you finished the last level with a sword fight. well you start the new one with your sword, so im like lookin around for someone to fight melee with. and all of a sudden people with guns come out shooting me while im in the middle of the room looking for the opponent. turns out i needed to switch my weapon lol.

btw, is it me, or where those bubbles on teh car in the car wash level really freakin awesome. what was that bump mapping or polygons, it was really well done.

and yea, ive had a few moments where the controller view spazes for a second, whcih i read about.. but you get it under control real fast. ill tell you one thing, if this ran off of dual joysticks it wouldnt be nearly as fun.

Whoo boy. I played Red Steel for about twenty minutes at the local college, and was not even mildly impressed with it. Smeared textures, pedestrian character designs, low polygon builds for the playfield... it was a bitter pill to swallow after the highs of Resistance: Fall of Man, or even Crackdown on the Xbox 360. I actually jumped back to the Wii menu and checked the display settings to make sure the system was taking full advantage of the high-definition television. It was set at the Wii's maximum resolution of 480p, proving that even HD can't cover up a case of the uglies.

I also had a tough time getting a grip on the play mechanics, which seemed weird, unnatural, and imprecise. Merely touching a gun isn't enough to collect it; instead you've got to stand directly over it, then flick the nunchuck down to grab it. I should be able to get the blasted thing without some awkward, extraneous motion, but it doesn't work out that way. Aiming the gun was a bit more familiar, but also difficult due to the overly sensitive control. I've had more luck with a standard joypad... it may be kludgy, but there's no worries about getting the shakes when you're targeting an enemy.

Ubisoft may have had the best of intentions for Red Steel, but they're going to have to try a whole lot harder with the sequel. Next to Resistance, this comes up embarrassingly short.

I havent played Red Steel. But I know 4 people that have it and they all say its a good game. All the reviews say it sucks. Well, it shows how much reviewers know. Seems all there care about is graphics nowadays

I didn't find Red Steel to be quite as bad as some online sites that have reviewed it said it to be. Gamestop's is closest. The controls are rather unpolished, but they're nothing that can't be mastered with some practice. I will give this advice: When first learning to play the game, replay the first level a time or two. Get in a good session that first time (at least a good hour's worth), and you'll get used to the control scheme for the game. Once you've done that, playing it isn't nearly as bad as you would be led to believe.

And of course, Metal Slug Anthology is seven layers of retrogaming goodness. :P :lust:

Everytime I see Red Steel mentioned this exact thing happens - reviews sad bad but the word of mouth is really good. I guess I'll have to check it out maybe after it drops in price - I don't do FPSs enough to justify full price.

Yup. Previously I needed to travel to a movie theatre in town to check out Metal Slug 4 as it's the only place I know of that has a machine.
If only Metal Slug had online co-op play, it'd be perfect.

I just read that Metal Slug Anthology doesn't support the Classic Controller - how are the other options, do any of them work well?

I use the Cube controller and it works very well.
The other Wii control setups range from interesting to stupid. Some of them are fun to try out, but most people won't use them for long.

The initial controller setting for Metal Slug Anthology for the Wii remote works well enough, and is the one I use. You turn the controller on its side (like an NES controller). Buttons 1 and 2 are used to shoot and jump, respectively, and grenades are lobbed by flicking the controller slightly.

I don't know that I would recommend the other Wii Remote controls for any serious play, but it's worth taking a look at for oddness' sake. However, the GameCube controller support is also very good.

So I recommend either the initial Wii Remote setting, or use a GCN controller.

yea thast what i do.. the standard controlls.. andim haivng a blast with the game.. its a nice game to turn on for 20-30 min, play trhough on e of the metal slugs and go about your day

and im really sorry that you were unimpressed with Red Steel Jess. First of all, if all you gave it was 20 min.. then , well.. tahst your problem.. you need to OWN this game and get into it.. its a real gem. adn as far as it now looking as good as Resistance.. well.. uh. DUH.

Still enough, i found certain moments where i went "oooo" and called my roomates to look. Far from a bad looking game, but if you want HD graphics good enough to see the pimple on the ass of your target in a sniper shot, maybe the wii isnt for you. I know your support for the system overall seems to be a bit lacking, thast your choice.. but the game is still fun enough. and the best FPS ive played for the system so far.
