OK, maybe this is common knowledge or has been answered before but I looked the forum over and didn't see a direct answer to this. Let's say someone who downloaded $50 worth of Virtual Console games to their Wii but then wanted to sell the sytem. Would the new owner get the downloaded games or are they lost forever?

I'm a happy Wii owner and in no way would sell my system but I'm just thinking about all the money people are spending on VC games. Thiings come up and sometimes people have to sell things that they don't really want to.

It's late and I think I'm rambling but my basic question is do the VC games follow the system? Hypothetically, if I sold my Wii to my neighbor and I have 10 VC games downloaded on the system, will he get those?

Thanks for any answers and I apologize if this is common knowledge or has been posted before, I really don't get how it all works with these Wii VC games.

Well, consider this. Any games downloaded from the Virtual Console service are stored in the Wii's internal memory. The system isn't going to know that it's been sold to a new owner or that it's been moved to a different location. Long story short, any games downloaded to the Wii will be accessible to its next owner. They might be screwed if they accidentally delete those games and ask Nintendo to have them restored, though.

As a person who does not own a Wii and therefore has no experience with the VC games, I'd be curious to see what the EULA (license agreement) for a VC game says about this, if there is even a EULA (which I'd be shocked if there weren't).

Okay...you will not like the answer to this..but this is how it works.

You have noticed that there is not only the option to reformat the Wii's internal memory, but also there is an option in the Wii shop channel to remove the Wii's account data as well.

What is suppsoed to happen if you sell your Wii to another individual is that your supposed to go into the shop channel and delete the account. This will basically remove the Wii from the Wii account system. Then your supposed to format the Wii internal memory.

Doing these actions will then have the Wii come up brand new to the new owner and none of your VC games that you have purchased will be downloable to the new owner without paying for them.

If you however do not remove this account data, then even reformating the Wii's internal memory will still allow the VC games to be redownloaded free of charge to the new owner. This is because the VC games in the store are tied directly to your Wii itself and not to you. Simply selling your Wii will give the new owner free access to your previous games you have downloaded.

In either case, selling your Wii to someone else, will still mean you have to repay to download all the VC games if you should ever purchase a new Wii system again. I myself have nearly 20 VC titles downloaded. As such I have ZERO plans to ever sell my Wii to anyone else or trade it in. In addition, if I should ever have a problem with my Wii, I will have to send it in to the big N to get it repaired so that all that data can be retained.

That's my one gripe with the online functionality. The way the games are downloaded, if you get another Wii system or later on upgrade to the successor console, there's no real way to migrate these games to that system so you can keep them. You have to repurchase.

Wouldn't been so much better if you could download and copy the VC games as you like to an SD card (so you can keep them and access them on any Wii console), but have the purchased content tied to your actual Wii Shop account (on Nintendo's servers) so that the games can only be accessed if you have indeed purchased them. It would've been hard to secure, though (you could always give a friend your password and copy of the game so they can play on their Wii as well).

Still, there should be some user-level way to migrate games over to another Wii console, or the Wii's successor when it arrives in another half-decade or so.
