Oh, did this come out today? That's now at the top of my "Wii To Buy" list. Unfortunately, no time for me to play games until I get Adventure II shipped, so it will have to wait. Look forward to hearing some reviews of the game, though.

A friend was over and GameStop called his cell telling him that it comes in tomorrow (10th), and if he buys a guide (nintendo or prima) with the game you get 10% off the guide (think they do this with all game guides, not sure).

interesting...all the local Best Buy ads that came in the Sunday paper said they would have it avaiable by Tuesday (The 10th) by 2pm. If they don't you get something like $20 off a future purchase.

So I might be making the trip up to my nearest Best Buy at lunch tomorrow and see if they honor this.

I may pick this up. I haven't played any of the other Paper Mario games though, so I'm afraid I might be lost on this one.

To my knowledge, that's Circuit City stores not BB.

I found the IGN review to be rather interesting. One of their key complaints (other than the non-stop yapping) was that Nintendo (don't they mean Intelligent Systems?) "should have spent more time on the 3D design". The reviewer complained that the 3D looked as flat as the 2D, and really should have been spruced up a bit more.

What I think he fails to understand is that he's most likely looking at the 3D scene the entire time. It's just that with the camera moved to one side of the landscape, everything appears to be 2D. If the developer spruced up the 3D as requested, it would ruin the carefully-crafted 2D effect. (Basically, looking a bit more like Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.)

Besides, it's Paper Mario. Not "Full, gee-whiz, cool-3D" Mario. ;)

I doubled checked my sales ad and I was correct. Best Buy claims to have this available today by 2pm.

They always get me with the "release date" statement. I have found that this is in fact the ship date and while some places may get the game in later in the day, most get it the next day (the day after "release day").

This is just my experience because I have been on the hunt many Tuesdays in the past only to find that I could actually find the game on Wednesday.

The original Phoenix Wright for the DS and Trauma Center for the DS both come to mind when I think of running around looking for a game on a Tuesday which was supposedly the release date.

Well..Super Paper Mario's release day..was in fact yesterday the 9th. The flyers for Best Buy here in Sunday's paper all show they would have the game available by Tuesday after 2pm. I didn't actually go and check this out, but I might after work and see for myself. The online inventory most likely won't reflect this properly either. However, I do feel confident that I could also contact a local Gamestop or EBGames and they would likely have the game in stock now as well.

I was able to get Elebits the day after release..as was the same with Okami. However, in the case of We Love Katamari, I actually did manage to not only find, but buy that game on the day of release. One gamestop near me had the shipment come in a day early and so it was unboxed and selling the day of release. That was cool...but rare.

It could also be that these stores already received their shipments but just haven't put them out yet. I know that one of the gamestops here had Crackdown about 2 days early, but were refusing to sell to customers who came in and asked to buy were turned down with them stating they had to wait a day or two for the official release day.

I'm picking it up after work, or I am getting a free $20 gift card.

Finally another Wii game worth playing.

(And don't say 'What about Excite Truck'? Puh leeze  ...)

I am excited to fire this one up.
I love the humor and rpg-ish game play of this series.

From Mario RPG on the SNES to 1000 year door, it's all been good !
I hear they took away the turn based fighting though, which concerns me a bit, but we'll see.

Actually around here...getting the games isn't the problem. For once in the case of the Wii...there are usually more games sent and produced than there were Wiis actually sold. So...it is kinda like 2600 ET days where you could find them everywhere easily. Most of the Wii titles have been this way with the exception of Wii Play. So getting Wii games even the newer ones haven't been a problem around here. Usually plenty and plenty and plenty of them to go around. In fact I just finally picked up Metal Slug just over a week ago, and it was the last copy that particular Best Buy had. But I'm pretty sure it was part of their initial stock of them they got over a month ago.

Don't know if I just got lucky, but I walked into Best Buy today at lunch and they had just put them out. The guy working there said they got the shipment earlier this morning. Might be worth checking out!

yeap...I picked mine up last night...no problem at all. All three of the area Best Buys here seemed to have plenty of copies available. The one I purchased mine at must have had at least about 20 copies of it. Funny thing is though, I haven't seen Prince of Persia Rival Swords in any of the local Best Buy stores. But then last night I go to Target and they have like 3 copies of it...hehe.

And yes..about the $20 off thing before. That was for Circuit City. Their flyer stated they would also have the game in by 2pm Tuesday or you would get a $20 giftcard. I don't know if that was a Tuesday only deal or not, but it was indeed Circuit City that had the $20 giftcards if they didn't have the game.

As for the game itself. It is a ton of fun so far! I think I like the game better since it plays more like a standard platformer mario brothers game. The music is also very catchy in this one and I really like the way the Wii-remote handles for the game. I'm still not very good at getting style points for shaking the remote, but that isn't really all that important anyway.

Having played and enjoyed every Mario RPG game (I'd lump the Mario & Luigi sagas in with Paper Mario) so far, I'm for sure going to pick this up.

So is it pretty much a platformer, or are there still some RPG elements? I heard the battles are no longer turn-based. It is hard to imagine a Paper Mario game without the turn-based battles.

No..the battles are not turn based at all. It is literally played like an old school mario bros. platformer. All the normal enemies you encounter are just wandering around on the playfields and you jump to avoid or stomp on them...your choice. You increase in level automatically as you play because every enemy you defeat or coin you pickup plus hidden bonuses will build your score. That score is more or less your total experience points and once you reach a certain score your level will automatically increase. In addition there are other powerups available that can increase attack and such without leveling up if I'm reading the manual correctly.

So..in a nutshell it is a standard Mario (mostly 2D) platformer but set in the paper mario universe. Your special powers are done in the form of little fairy icons that you find and discover called "Pixls". But basically gameplay consists of some story then going through big doors from playfield to playfield. It basically plays like the other paper marios in this regard, but instead of the seperate turn based battles when you encounter enemies, you actually just fight there right there on the playfield in standard jump on the bad guys Mario fashion.

Really what you have seen in any gameplay or review videos is exactly how the game plays out. But what keeps you playing this game, is the constant switching from the 2d to 3d views to look for hidden places, items, or solutions for getting through the level.

I also like how this game breaks up the different playfields as chapters done in the retro chapter 1 - 1 or 1 - 2 like the old world 1-1 or world 2-4 type levels in the older games...

I really am impressed with this game thus far and I like this play mechanic more than the turn based or timing based attacks of the previous titles. Also it was stated before that IGN's review was sorta odd in that they loved the 2d side and thought the 3d side wasn't done very well. Well I can tell you for a fact that the 2d view is the 3d view just looking from the side. So when you switch to 3d view, your seeing the same thing just from another perspective which adds depth and reveals that a set of blocks that look like they are all together and can be walked on as a floating platform can in fact be broken out across the playfield when viewed in 3d mode which changes how the playfield is then navigated. It really is difficult to explain and I haven't really seen too many videos that really show how this flows together so seamlessly. The fact that you play the entire game from pretty much holding the Wii-remote in retro NES controller way really helps the gameplay that much more. I haven't found a need to use the pointer function that much but where it is needed is fairly obvious. I also like the fact that the game goes into autopause when you use the pointer function looking for hidden things.

My take...

What the hell happened here?
This is SOOOO not Paper Mario.
I have only played through the first three levels, but this is should just be called 'New Super Mario Bros. 2'
(Except you get to go to a 3-D Universe.)

This has just about none of the Mario / Luigi, Paper Mario, or Mario RPG elements.
Everything is laid out like a Super Mario Bros. game with a 3-D twist.

If I was told that this is what it would be I would actually really like the game.
It looks great, it is fun to play and has a fun 3D twist.
However, IT IS NOT Paper Mario.

Just because I can go into a store and buy power up does not mean it's Paper Mario.

That said, I would probably be raving about the game if it was called 'New Super Mario Bros. 2'.
Hell, you even turn into that giant mario character from the DS game.
If you are looking for Paper Mario type gameplay though, it's just not here.

Now I enjoyed the last Paper Mario game for as much as I've played it.
What you've mentioned above though has me instantly sold on this new game. New SMB 2? I am so there

I agree.
It is a great game (so far)
Just not what I was expecting at all and feel a bit ripped off.

Like I said, if you expect "New Super Mario Brothers 2", you will be very happy.
If you are expecting Paper Mario like the box says, you will be very confused.

I wasn't going to get this, then I heard it's less of an RPG and more of a platforumer. Then, I heard about the flipping platforms and I almost shit.

Of course, Walmart here doesn't get Wii games the day they come out, for some reason. Have to try my luck elsewhere, I guess.

I got this yesterday too. It's definately a pretty fun game. 2D/3D flipping is pretty cool. I agree with the New Super Mario Bros. 2 feel to it. This games barely feel anything like an RPG, but I don't have a problem with that since I'm not big RPG fan. It's more like a cross between New Super Mario Bros and Super World with a dash of Paper Mario thrown in there.
