I'm really liking it.

I wish it'd been 30$ rather than 40$, but I'm really happy thusfar. Serious Sam style shooting with campy, 60's style sci-fi bugs. Dialogue is funny and terrible at the same time, story doesn't get in the way, lots and lots of powerups.

I miss this style of pick up and play gaming.

I'm playing through it now. It is a great game, with that real B-movie feel. The fact that there's a crap load of weapons to find but can only choose two to use is kind of a turn-off. I pretty much been using the same few weapons through the game. I'm only on level 6 but I have been playing through 3x on easy, normal and hard. I've tried to play through the first level on harder but always get my ass handed to me. Hopefully as I get more life I will be able to survive the onslaught. It sounds like you get the more powerful weapons by playing the levels on harder and inferno. I did get my copy for around $30, Picked it up used from Amazon, was like $32 shipped. I would highly recommend this game. It's a no-brainer but pretty fun.

Love this game also. I play the heck out of it.

I've only beat one level on inferno. Can't recall the level number but's it's the first one with the large robots.

I still can't beat the first level on inferno even with better weapons. I must suck at it! But it's fun trying!

I don't believe there is a demo. I saw trailers for this game and knew it was one I was going to want to pick up.
I have yet to be able to beat a level on even harder yet. I think at this point I'm to level 12, cleared all on easy, normal and hard.
I keep waiting to find a weapon that will turn the tides in the harder and inferno levels.
Has anyone finished this game yet? Do you get more ass-kicking weapons towards the end?

I'm on level 30 something and the new weapons are few and far between. I keep trying to finish the hardest/inferno levels to see if better weapons show up.

I play all five difficulties per level so it has taken me a awhile to get where I am at.

Also I don't think the game has any achivement points (Not that it matters but it's the first one I have seen like this)

Also I've yet to see where any sniper rifle is of any use in this game. Not sure why they are in it.

The game has achievements that add up to 1000 gamerpoints....but only six of them.
Five are for completing the entire game on each difficulty level, and one is for finding all the weapons.

It looks awesome.

A bit off topic, but I have a DS game by the same guys featuring giant robots. It's all in Japanese but it's a laugh.

I bought this game today based on the recommendations here. My faith in AtariAge is now restored, because I love this game.

One of the reasons I like it is the same as Bullet Witch. I like not having to run out of ammo (dealing with short reload times is OK). The level of mayhem is wonderful.

I love the huge levels. I was already cackling with glee at all the green blood filling the air when I discovered that the buildings are destroyable. Then I became absolutely manic, destroying the city in a state of total hysteria.

Probably most important is the draw distance and the size of the enemies. I was walking up to the Space Needle type structure in the distance and saw the ants crawling all over it. I was in awe. And then there are the sheer number of enemies which is just icing on the cake (or is that green goo on the streets?)

This is why I come to this forum, so I don't miss games like this. So, everyone who spoke up about this game over the past couple of weeks, thank you.

I'm still waiting for Bullet Witch to drop to $30 or less on Amazon. There's a copy on there now for $26 but it's disk only, I will wait for the full package.

I was thinking the same thing, these two game have some definate similarities and I plan on getting BW soon I hope, but in the mean time I suspect it'll take some time to play through ED2017. It has something like 53 levels.

I checked last night i'm up to level 46. I guess I didn't investigate the achievements on this title. I'm so use to in game notifications that an achivements has been completed that I didn't think they had any.

As for bullet witch I had to get this one. I saw bad reviews on it but I still purchased it (The concept of the game sounded cool and I love 3rd person shooters). It's a fun game but not fantastic. Visually it's nice and the controls are okay. I would wait for this title to lower in price before deciding on purchasing. Your not missing anything by paying full retail.

I played through the game on easy.
The game suffer from slow down if there are too many ememies and explosions going on.
I dunno how a person is supposed to survive on harder and inferno level!
I've heard people say they have their life built up to 5500 and still have trouble on some the harder levels.
I wonder if the life has a cap?
Right now my life is at about 1500.
Playing through on normal and hard shouldn't be a problem...but those last two?? Jeeze.

Has anyone else still been trying to beat this games achievements?
I'm going for the achievement for beating the game on harder now.
My life is around 6250 and some stages still kick my butt!
I know one thing, when it's all over I'll definately get my money's worth outta this game I think I have like 62 hours invested in it! Great game.

I am trying to beat Hardest, but 2 missions (51 and the last one) are kicking my arse. My health is only 4500 so I need to do some farming. Did about 20 missions on Insane, very tough, will need to recruit my wife to help out soon :D

Depends on the stage. Really, the beauty of this game is devising a sound strategy with weapons/movement and follow through.

My typical loadout was the Stingray M99 (the most powerful one) and then one of the following:

Lyzander Z
ZERA
ZEX

Fighting those flying gunships, I would take one of the shotguns or assault rifle.

At first, I underestimate those gun pods (ZER), but after learning how to use them properly, they are very useful in crowd control or setting up a line then use the grenade/rocket launcher to take out groups of monsters.

I bought and I like it alot, co-op is the way to go, nuts to online who needs it
I agree on the weapon strategy point, the game is actually deeper than many reviewer give it credit for
personally I like using the bound gun or flame thrower for my primary fire arm then bringing along either a missile or rocket launcher depending on the type of enemy

I know I'm coming to the party late...

Earth Defense Force 2017 is more wonderful than I expected. I'm only up to level 15 , but Wow.

(Heh, it reminds me a bit of Alien Front Online for the DC, but is at LEAST eight times as fantastic)

It touches so many sci fi movie and literature tropes:
50s B-movie, with the scaled up insects
Godzilla, setting wise
Starship Troopers (the book) the being swarmed by feeling, and going into the dark insect nest
War of the Worlds (the book) with the walkers trudging through the water
Independence Day, giant silent enemy starships hanging over the earth

(I know some of these images may have had their origins elsewhere, but that's where I know 'em from)

And the scale of these things! Like that giant walker on Levels 14 and 15... does SotC get bigger than that? (I sadly couldn't get into SotC) It's the first game that... I dunno, gives me a walker that is to me now what the AT-ATs were in Empire Strikes Back to me as an 7 year old.

I tried the first level a week ago, but wasn't grabbed by it... I think I got killed near the end by my own rocket, but I didn't know it was the en of the level, and I had that feeling of "where is this game going with this" I sometimes get -- especially w/ the item drops, and that's the same problem I had with Bioshock... games that have a plethora of pickups (as opposed to say, classic DOOM with just a few distinct weapons and ammos), and that encouragement to grab all these damn items, because you don't know if they're useful to later. I have to let go of Obsessive/Compulsive urges to do it "perfect", weapon wise, and just find something that seems effective and run with it.

Also, it took me a while to accept that it's ok to level buildings. This game is at an interesting point of "realness" and arcadeness, and sometimes it's not clear what you should fix and what should roll with. Same with your buddies getting killed. I like that they are useful in combat. Though like some other games with destructible environments (Hulk) and non-immortal team mates, if a level goes on too long you find yourself walking in a burned out wasteland.

I'm also sad that vehicles have no crosshairs and (I think) ignore any setting to use inverted aiming.

So I think the single best images for me is made when you destroy one of those small bipedal walkers in a huge explosion, and then its brother starts breaking through the fiery smoke, guns blazing.

A lot of the old talk here was about the weapons, but I don't see that as being such a problem.

(Actually between the "2 weapon limit" and the loading screens explaining the game it reminds me a bit of Mercenaries)

I do wish there were a cheat or savegame way to get all the weapons, but I think I'm getting enough to get by...

I still haven't beat the game on the "harder" setting. I need to clear like 6 or 7 stages. :(
I need to get me a partner and co-op the rest of them I think. Too bad the game doesn't support on-line play. Still I agree, it is a great great game. They have it for $19.99 now on Amazon. If you are a 360 owner and don't have this game, you could do worse than to snag a copy.

I got mine for 20 at Gamestop.

I'm guessing they send about the same number of guys at you in Co-Op? It sounds like it's easier, what with double the firepower and the chance to have two big targets for the enemy hoards...

I tried the spider intro level on Harder and then Hard and couldn't get anywhere. Not sure if my health and guns are up to snuff yet :-)

I used the spider intro on hard to farm items. Sniper rifle or rocket launcher, plus an assault rifle. Blast the closer ones, then start sniping the big mass of bugs at the end of the street. They'll just sit there for a LONG time before they start looking for you.
Use the tank, if it seems viable(I can't recall if it's still useful at that point).

I didn't beat the game past normal, though.
Stages 1-16, plus 18 and 19 on hard.

I REALLY liked listening to the sidekicks shout, though. Almost as much as the bowling noise when you killed a spider. :P

SEND 'EM ALL TO HELL!
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
EDF! EDF! EDF!

The laser rifle you get for clearing easy would be a LOT more fun if it was reloadable.

Also: Gunpods are completely, irrefutably awesome for the stage where you have to clear out the spider hive.
You know, the one where they warn you not to fall down. Just walk up to the edge, throw some gunpods down, and activate them. No muss, no fuss.

Vehicles are also grossly over-rated. The tank is useful on the lower levels, but everything else is near-worthless.
And once you get a few items under your belt, your guns are more powerful and your armor is thicker than the tank's.
