I currently have a 1st gen Xbox, the halo edition, I have 11 games total, we dont play a lot of games around my house, just the occasional game here and there. Its mostly me and my son of 6yrs old.
the games are mostly racing games.

I am considering a PS3 because of its overall value, being a blue-ray machine, its much more ecconomical to get a ps3 than a BR player in my mind.

we arnt too worried about playing older games, as we have 0 ps2 games.
I have considered the 360, but I dont want to go with HD DVD's in the future, I dont think the HD DVD will win, I think it will go the way of the beta tapes.
There is so much talk of the ps3 being the console that doenst make it...bla bla bla, i dont want to start a thread over all that, just getting some simple opinions.

I currently have a new LCD HD TV that can handle the 1080i

So, is the ps3 a decent path?

I think the PS3 would be a good choice for you if you want to watch blu-ray movies and play games. There aren't a lot of games to choose from right now but that will change by the fall. The online store is adding new content almost every week which helps. The PS3's backward compatability is a great feature. I'm sure you'll be able to find some great games at bargain prices. You should give Gran Tourismo a try since you like racing games. There's no way to tell when the price will drop but several stores are giving away extra controllers with a purchse during this holiday weekend. If you think of any specific questions, let us know. I'm sure someone here will try to help out.

My advice is to buy your video game console based on the games, not what flicks you can watch on it.
Who cares which movie media format (if either) "wins"
7 years from now you will be re-buying your movie collection yet again when they release another format anyways.

That said, consider the fact the latest gen of consoles offer movie rentals or purchases so you can watch movies high definition flicks without spending hundered or thousands on a new collection of movies you will watch once or twice.
At least Live offers movies, not 100% sure about Sony as I do not have a PS3 yet but if they don't I'm sure it's coming.
An added plus is you wont wear out your disk drive watching movies since the files sit on the hard drive.
Just my opinion. Think video games first and don't worry about the movies. Most flicks Hollywood craps out these days aren't worth spending $25 to watch in high-def anyways.

I agree, both HD-DVD and Blu Ray, no matter which "wins", are both stopgap formats to co-exist alongside DVD until a less marginal improvement comes along. If you don't play very many games anyway, just buy an HDMI compatible DVD player, a set of component cables for your Xbox, and use the $450+ you have left to stock up on games for that, they're crazy cheap now.

Your best option is probably an Atari 7800. It'll play almost the entire awesome 2600 library as well as some of the best arcade ports of all time for the 7800. With the money left over you could just do what Scumdog says and get a real solid DVD player. Also, if I was you I'd get a surround sound system for it, as audio, and not video, is the real movie enhancement worth paying for. Then I'd use the rest of the excess to buy a Big Mac extra value meal. I mean, in your plan you don't end up eating anything do you? This makes my plan inherently better.

Seems obvious you don't care too much about getting games. If you're after mostly Blu-Ray movies and a few games then the PS3 is a no brainer. I haven't had any problems with mine yet, knock on wood. The updates take long but they are usually worth it. The last update upscales DVDs and PSOne and PS2 games which may appeal to you since you own a HDTV.

You may want to look into installing Linux on it if you like emulation. I've yet to try it. I'm waiting for a good complete walk through guide.

I a 7800 already. I wanted to hook it up over the weekend, but just didnt happen.

I have decided to hold off on the PS3 purchase. after reading your posts and taking a good look at how often we acutally use the xbox or any game console in the house, doesnt justify the purchase of the PS3. and after looking around none of the retal places have BR or HD dvd's and I have passed the phase where I purchase the movies, as mentioned, they are watched only 2x and it doesnt justify the purchase price of a BR movie disc.

I would wait and see in your situation. As far as the movies you should look at Netflix. Without any increase in your subscription fee you can enable either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD and any movie in your list that has your hd format available will be sent in the hd format instead of in a DVD format. The only real benefit to HD-DVD for me is that most movies come in dual (HD-DVD/DVD) format so that I can watch it in my media room on my 80" screen and then if it is a movie my son likes he can watch it in the living room or in the bedroom before bed.
