If your tank gets hit you can exit by holding A and tapping B (or vice versa), at least in theory. For whatever reason it doesn't always work.
It's difficult to hit enemies with the gun. Grenades are often helpful, and you have a huge number of them so don't hesitate to toss them around. Upgraded grenades (The "B" pickup) are very nice and can kill lots of enemies at once. You lose them when you die, which makes it even harder to keep the next guy from dying in the same spot.
