You guys all realize that the PS3 harddrive is not proprietary, and that you can slap in whatever size you like, right? :ponder:

Yeah I knew that, but here's the thing, if something were to go wrong you just voided your warranty and while $500 is a lot for a console..it's even more for a console that doesn't work. I'm all about investing in extended warranty's, the last thing I'd do is pay the extra cash for one and then start cracking open the console.

It does seem that if a person wants a PS3 with the BC hardware they would have to snag one quick. Personally this isn't a huge issue for me, I've had the 360 over a year and have yet to play an original Xbox game on it. Too busy playing new stuff! I'll wait for a price drop on the price drop and more games.

Warranty? It's a user-access plastic door on the side of the system, you don't need to open the console. :?

Ohhhh Good deal. Most times if you mess with the hardware you void the warranty. I didn't know the PS3 was set up like this. That is pretty cool. Is there a cap to the amount of space or can you insert any size HD?

People have hooked up to 500GB external drives to it (some company is selling a kit to do that even), internally the size is limited by the laptop drive form-factor, I think laptop drives go up to 250GB or something like that.

Gotta ask. WTF are you doing with that much space? Unless you're using your PS3 as a media center and downloading movies like mad, there's no reason an average user would need that much space.

I read somewhere that the new $500 PS3's are not going to have the EE chips, so their backwards compatibility is going to be done via software. If this is true I'm gald I bought mine before hand.

Tempest

The dumping of the EE is not related to the price drop. I think only the first production of PS3s (700k) includes it. I'm not sure if your PS3 has one.
The EE is not crucial for BC anyway, Sony wanted the software emulation in the first place. All European consoles are missing the EE chip from the start. Software emulation is just fine and allows upscaling of PS1 and PS2 games. Which means it has full BC. BC is further improved by firmware updates.
You get the same value for 100$ less.

Looks like the 80 Gig model will include a copy of Motorstorm as well....

Quote

The new PS3 increases the system's storage capacity to 80 gigabytes from 60 gigabytes and also includes a retail copy of the online racing title "MotorStorm," a company spokesman said. It will be priced at $599.

The larger capacity machine won't be available in the United States and Canada until August.

No, my PS3 has the EE and trust me, you can tell. Try playing any of the Final Fantasy games and tell me that the software emulation is just fine...

What? :?

target is selling the ps3 for 499.99 despite what the retail price is. many times, especially with dvds and such, companies such as target or best buy purchase them at a price that is not that much below retail. my old friend used to work at best buy and said many of the products in the store , while expensive to the consumer, didn't bring that much profit to the company due to the price they paid for it initially from the manufacturer. I'm wondering how much profit Target is getting on the ps3, if they are selling it 100 dollars below retail.

and were you saying what as in you didnt know target was selling them 100 bucks cheaper? its been all over the news. the local store here in town has theirs on the reduced price. my question was i wonder if they are moving stock to try to make sales, of if they are just trying to clean inventory. if they don't make a profit on the system at 100 below retail, id image it would be for clearing it out, thats all im asking.

It's been all over the news that Sony confirmed the price drop, hence the "what?". Seems like you only read one or two posts, instead of the whole thread. :ponder:

i read the first two pages, and thought id chime in when i saw someone mention target. last i read you guys said that the price drop was not confirmed yet... officially.. either way, target was selling the units for cheaper before the price dropped (if it has now officially). my question still stands. how much money would target make or lose if they sold a system 100 dollars under retail. im curious how much these companies buy these units for from Sony. whether or not sony has changed the price now or not doesnt matter, i was curious if target was losing money before or not.

They won't lose any money and they started selling them at the discounted price, the day Sony confirmed and announced the price drop. These people don't pay up-front, they pay when they have sold the units, or in chunks of units sold.

That used to be the case before game consoles cost a ridiculous sum of money! And actually had a library of games worth playing, not just one or two good games. For the same reason I never did buy an original Xbox. Wanted to play Halo, but I sure as heck wasn't going to buy an Xbox just to play a single game (which I would eventually play when it was released for OS X).

..Al

My original post was just an attempt at a little humor as it struck me as sort of funny that a guy who probably owns every retro console ever made, 1,000's of games, and runs a website about gaming was being "picky" about current consoles.

But I know what you are saying. I've had my PS3 since two days after it launched and there has been a real lack of games, both on store shelves and in the PS Store, to justify spending $600 for a system. I could have easily waited until a much later date (when more games were out) to purchase my system and the $600 price tag would have been much easier to explain to the wife-unit than it was last November.

But for several reasons, I've enjoyed owning my PS3 and don't regret my purchasing it when I did one bit. Sure, I'd like to save $100 over what I paid and get 5 free Blu-ray movies. But with the fun and enjoyment I've had for the last 8 months of owning it, that in itself was worth the price I paid.

But I hear what you are saying and that's cool.

Resistance: Fall of Man is pretty much a must. I didn't like Motorstorm enough to pay full price for it, but you might like it. Ninja Gaiden Sigma is out, though its pretty damn hard. Next month look for Lair and Warhawk. Keep in mind Warhawk is online play only.

My online name is xenorpher

My PS3 wouldn't let me edit my name so its stuck like that.

Actually I went back a couple hours later and cancelled the order. I got to thinking, the main reason I'm picking this up is because it comes with free movies and a remote (which the choices pretty much sucked and it was a lame reason to purchase a videogame system) There honestly isn't one PS3 game out now I want. We still have plenty of work and expenses associated with fixing up that cabin and it seemed silly to spend half a grand to watch some mediocre flicks. I wound up cancelling the PS3 and getting the HD DVD drive add on for the 360 and a few movies. Maybe when there is some good exclusive titles I'll try again.

I went to five different stores yesterday looking for the PS3 and they were all out of them everywhere I went. I went to to Best Buys and almost slugged the sales person in the face for practically calling me a theiving liar when I asked why they hadn't marked down their systems. I called up a target on my break by where I work and got it with the price cut and the games Oblivion, and Resistance. I am happy except for the fact that the wireless internet connection is messed up on it and I might have to return it for a new one.

Are you sure it isn't your router or simply user-error? Just asking, most of the time that seems to be the case.

Ok...I'm back in the club. I told my girlfriend about almost getting the PS3...and she was like...Whoa what a good deal. LOL
So I went ahead and re-ordered the PS3, with the free remote and 6 Blu-Ray disks.
I think I might keep it hidden away in the spare bed-room and let Santa bring it to us in December, maybe by then there will be some games that catch my eye. Plus I'll have one Xmas gift out of the way. Last year it was Wii....This year it'll be the PS3. THANKS SANTA!!
