http://www.joystiq.c...00-80gb-to-500/

Ars Technica has a mole that's had a few hits in the past that's now whispering about something big . The mole says that Sony's console pricing for the holiday season will be the 80GB PlayStation 3 at $499.99 and a 40GB PlayStation 3 at $399.99. Yep, 40GB. We hope there's some other sort of pot sweetening here, otherwise, the only consumer for the 80GB SKU is the one who doesn't realize that you can hook whatever hard drive you want up to the system. The mole also claims that Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray will be packed in with one or both of the consoles and that the PlayStation 2 will be dropping to $99.99.

The PS2 and PS3 price cuts would make sense going into a tough holiday fight. Even the 40GB rings true in the sense that it's PlayStation 3 plus baffling pricing, the Sony and Cher of the industry at the moment. With Tokyo Game Show just around the corner, we're hopeful we'll get some official word soon.

If this true, then Sony did a good move. I wonder how stripped down the 40 GB ps 3 is in features. I think the $99.00 ps 2 is signal that the system will a secondary system for sony starting next year to the end of the systems life in 2010 or 2011. I think it might be the final price cut for the ps 2.

And you know there are. A month or two ago at a Best Buy, I overheard some kid telling his mom that he wanted the EIGHTY GIG VERSION. When 60 gig versions with the Emotion Engine chipset were still sitting on the shelf. Stupid kid.

However the 40gb model has also been confirmed to not have any ANY backward compatibility correct? In that if I'm not mistaken Sony has removed the PS2 GPU completely from the 40gb SKU?

If there is still PS2 backward compatibility then that price is a damn good one. But without it, I don't know...

No backward compatibility in the 40GB. The 80GB isn't going anywhere, though, and it has software backward compatibility.

Yeah, it would be a better deal if the 40GB had it too, but that's one reason why it costs less. It's just like, you don't buy a Mercedes C-class and expect it to have everything you'd get in the S-class. Otherwise, why would they even make both models?

I did buy a 60GB model before they were gone to make sure I had the hardware backward compatibility, though. It was worth paying extra for, for me.
