Game Info

Coin-op released by Atari Games in 1988; ported to the NES by Tengen and released in 1988.

Other platforms: Everything has some kind of Tetris port, I think.

Related games: Welltris (1989-Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, DOS, Macintosh, ZX Spectrum), Faces (1990-Amiga, DOS), Super Tetris (1991-Amiga, DOS), etc.

Tips

We played Tetris (the Nintendo version) almost exactly a year ago. Here are the tips from that thread:

Quote

The A and B buttons rotate the pieces in different directions (A = clockwise, B = counterclockwise. Or vice versa.) If you learn to rotate both ways you will never have to rotate a piece 3 times. At the faster levels it makes a big difference.

Obvious, but go for all Tetrises (4-line combos) - they give the most points.

The classic technique is to build a solid mass of blocks, leaving room for the straight-line piece on one side or the other. The variation on this I use is to leave room for the straight piece in the middle, since that is where new pieces drop. When the pieces are falling quickly and your screen is almost filled it can be the difference between losing and getting a Tetris!

And I don't know if my version is the Tengen version or not.....I'm supposing it is.
I'm sure both are the same gameplay anyways.

I found out that the version me and Artlover are playing isn't the Tengen version.

And I can't find a ROM image of the Tengen version anywhere.

Look for a ROM labelled "unlicensed." I found it very easily earlier today. And the gameplay is undoubtedly close, but it almost certainly isn't exactly the same, and the same for the scoring. Make sure you are playing the correct version of Tetris. The graphics are obviously different; here are some screenshots to help you out.

Nintendo version (this is the wrong one! Do not submit scores if you are playing this version!):

I'm even worse at this version.

I was watching the demo go.....and it seemed to score normally. I think the scoring mechanism is screwed up when I play. Hmmmm......

Nope......apparently my score is working fine.

That means Artlover must have been playing a long time for that score.................plus I suck.

Since Punisher 5.0 is doing the pinning and unpinning.......it'll happen when he gets around to it.

Don't worry. ;)

I'm using UberNES, what's a good nes emu that takes screenshots?

Think I'll check nestopia. I don't like not being able to post a screenie.

This is by far the weirdest version of Tetris I have ever played. I have never played a version that had 30-line levels, that paused between levels, and that gave level-completion bonuses for Tetrises.

Odd, odd.

But still Tetris. 73,937

And we're done! Sorry I'm late; sick yesterday. :|

Hope you had fun with the naughty version of Tetris.
