As most of us know, www.stage6.com is a great place to get videos from the internet. Unfortunately, people have been known to upload HD-quality licensed movies to the site, and people watch them before the admins can take them down... but we'll not speak of that here. It uses a proprietary DivX web player, but someone figured out how to directly download videos to be played on the PS3.

The above link explains how to do this in detail, but here's the gist: find a movie on the site using the PS3 web browser. The URL will look something like this:

www.stage6.com/category/xxxxxx/name-of-movie

Where "xxxxxx" is some number. The movie won't play in the browser, but if you edit the URL to look like this:

video.stage6.com/xxxxxx/.divx

You'll get a pop-up message asking if you want to download the video. I've tried it and it works; unfortunately, the download stopped at 97% with no way to resume because I made the grave mistake of popping in a DVD. So much for "background downloading".
