US Getting White PlayStation 3?
UPDATE - Federal Communications Commission filings seemingly reveal that Sony’s Ceramic White 40GB PS3 is headed stateside.
Update: Added SCEE comments.
The Ceramic White PS3 unit is currently only available in Japan, having been released in the region on November 11, 2007, although filings submitted with the Federal Communications Commission indicate that is soon to change.
The initial filings were made in October of 2007, and show that Sony requested short-term confidentiality so as to "avoid premature release of sensitive information prior to marketing or release of this product to the public".
The filings are now publicly available, along with numerous pictures of the Commission's test rig.
Despite enjoying record sales in December, during which time US consumers snapped up 797,600 PS3s, sales of the system still trailed behind those of Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.
When contacted by Next-Gen Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said it was aware of the FCC filings, but suggested that SCEA’s Ceramic White PS3 release plans may not yet be concrete. SCEE also added that there are currently no plans to release the unit in Europe.
“…SCEA make many of these filings each year and it does not necessarily mean they will definitely happen… As for SCEE, we have no plans [to release the Ceramic White PS3] at the moment.”
Next-Gen has contacted SCEA for confirmation of its hardware release plans
