When you play back a 4:3 DVD (ie, Star Trek: The Next Generation), does the PS3 provide the option to display the 4:3 image with bars on the sides, so that it's not distorted?

I have a Samsung BluRay player (yes, one of the shitty ones they're being sued over) and it doesn't provide this option. So, if I watch TV shows on DVD, or older movies, I have to watch them in that nauseating stretch-o-vision. I'm very seriously considering replacing the Samsung with a PS3, and if this option were included, it'd be a VERY big plus.

I just stuck a copy of The Kids in the Hall in my PS3 and it played the DVD with the vertical black lines on both ends.

From what I understand the PS3 is one of the best Blu-Ray players available.

I agree. I use it for all types of movie's and mpeg playback. Its the best player I have ever had and with Sony pushing down new features and updates periodically I cant think of anything else that can come close.

When I was deciding which player to get, it came down to the BD-P1200 or the PS3. I chose the 1200, based on the specs of the unit, and at the time, the PS3's firmware wasn't even close to what it is now. The 1200 had the potential to be the best BluRay player on the market by leaps and bounds-- unfortunately, Samsung's support is terrible, so it's crippled to the point of being useless.

I'm wishing I went with the PS3 from the get-go.
