Game Info

The console version of Top Gun was released by Konami in 1987. Home computer versions (see below) were released by Ocean between 1986-1987; I'm not sure if the game is the same or not - from screenshots I found online it looks like the home computer versions used wire-frame, "Battlezone" graphics.

Other platforms: Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, DOS, ZX Spectrum

Sequels/spinoffs: Top Gun: The Second Mission (NES - 1990), Top Gun: Fire at Will (DOS, PlayStation - 1996), Top Gun: Combat Zones (GameCube, PlayStation 2, Windows - 2001)

Tips

How to land
========
Ignore the LSO. You're smarter than he is.
Look at the target altitude and speed. Use your superior human intellect to get there. Perfect landing.

The ships on level 2 are a pain. Safer to keep climbing and avoid them. The cheap "Wolf" missiles are probably a mistake on that level also - you don't need that many, and I almost died trying to kill the carrier with those peashooters. I'd use at least the middle missiles if I was going to play again.

There's one thing that absolutely needs to be explained. Everybody new at the game struggles with it, and I don't want it to hold anyone back.

... And after trying to make it sound so easy, I crashed at the end of mission 2. Apparently, the game decided at the last possible second that I needed to go "Right! Right!". :x

I must not have the US rom... this one plays music constantly, but shuts it off during the refueling sequence (opposite of what I expected). Don't know if the gameplay is any different, but with the lack of competition I guess nobody's going to care. I have a cart, but the NES wasn't usable at the moment.

But I always thought that if all else fails, use fire.

Well, that usually works, but there's this problem with fire onboard ships at sea.
