Someone has given some bad information and I wanted to correct it. Rainbow gels are smart bombs, they do not give extra lives, if they did you wouldn't need any continues.
Extra lives are at 50,000 for the first one and every 200,000 there after. Photon blaster (sounds like photon tractor to me) and level 3 homing missiles are the safest bet to beat the game, and make it easier to secure the Easter egg.
I'm uploading a video to youtube right now with the Easter egg, I have known about it for 18 years at least but have never seen any other information on it so I figured for it's 20th anniversary it was time to let the cat out of the bag. Once the video is loaded I'll link to it so you can all whip out the game again to give it a go.
