Canyon Climber

Contest ends Friday, September 26, 2008 at 11:30 pm EDT.

Begin this game on level 1. If level 1 seems too easy for you and you want to play a different level to begin with, feel free to do so.

As always, please feel free to post comments, suggestions, ideas and gripes.

One more thing guys.. I fly out this afternoon to go home for a visit. I will be gone for 5 weeks. In that time, I will still be doing the contests, but I might not be as quick at getting scores posted. So please bear with me, and I will do my best to keep things running as smoothly as possible. Thanks a bunch for all your effort and patience!!! I couldn't have asked for a better group of people! :)

And I thought I was doing well with 40,000 :D after an hours play I topped it with 40,200 losing 3 men on one screen, DOH!

Strangely addictive game.... Have just managed this ;)

Have fun

You'll laugh, you'll cry, but mostly, you'll want to fling your controller across the room.
Marvel as you stab right on the controller, while your character just stands still and mocks you.
Be amazed as yet again, a mountain goat changes direction just as you try to jump over it.
Thrill to the excitement as you start climbing a ladder only to have a bird appear and shit on you, literally.
Yes, it will happen, over and over and over again.
Yet, you will play "just one more game", The START key will be your best friend!

I wanted to like this game, so much potential for the era, yet mind numbingly sluggish (and unresponsive) controls frustrate.
(Both on my GP2X and the Mac)
Too much reliance on "cheap deaths" to manage difficulty.
No chance to 'scramble' in hectic situations- jumps must be executed too far in advance.
Oh well.

I had to fly last week, went through 2+ sets of batteries on my GP2X playing the silly game in the airport and on the plane.

Sounds like I need a GP2X. Hows the Jaguar emu on that so far?

Haven't tried jag emulation on it. A8 is great (as is 2600 & 7800).
Mame runs great, NES, SNES, Genesis all good.

There's a new version coming out that is faster, and there's a project nearing completion called Pandora that is built by some GP2X distributors who took tons of input from the GP2X community. I'll probably jump from the GP2X to Pandora once it hits.

That said, really do like the little GP2X, Linux OS, runs lots of stuff (native and emulation), decent form factor, uses 2 AA bats (comes with rechargeables). Took mine to Iraq and back, still works great.

Hey, I just posted a video playing to the score of 144,600 on canyon climber for the TRS-80.

There seems to be some differences between this version and the atari version. For instance, the atari one seems to be slower? However, the TRS-80 version only has two goats on the top level... but there are more bridges, I think.
Also the indians have more detail on the atari version.

Anyhow, watch the video... and let me know what's different, in particular I'm curious if the atari version gets as fast as the TRS-80 one.

Thanks!

Wow. the gameplay seems quite a bit different, in particular, the character's interaction with the ladders seems far superior in the trs-80 version. The transition to and from the ladders is maddeningly slow on the A8. It also seems like the character moves faster relative to the goats. Some of the moves in the video would not be possible on the A8. The goats also seem to be less prone to reverse direction.

That said, the A8 version is much slower. Seems like the trs-80 version relies on speed to take away your lives (top of the last level looks especially evil), whereas the A8 version relies on cheap stuff (goat reversals while you are jumping, sad ladders, etc)

Thanks for watching my video and comparing them for me. Never played the Atari version, so I was really curious as to the differences. And you are right.. . it seems that I have the most trouble with the end of the eagle stage, especially on later canyons as it's extremely sensitive and easy to walk off cliffs instead of jumping. Plus those stupid eagle rocks... I really need to come up with a strategy for that. Sounds like the Atari has more difficulty on the goat stage then?

The eagle stage is pretty easy on the A8. The goat part is the board that takes all your lives.
