http://www.the-crow.co.uk/jagcdtrans/If you have a Jaguar CD unit that is no longer working, you may be interested to know that Graeme Hinchliffe has put together a guide explaining how to replace the Jag CD's laser transport mechanism. Along with detailed directions on exactly how to perform this surgery, Graeme has taken many excellent photos to help illustrate the process. Even if your Jaguar CD unit is working fine, you may still be curious to see what's hiding inside. You can find Graeme's guide here.

Very cool! I had been trying to find one of these mechanisms myself to try and make something like this! Awesome!

I just did a quick search on google for one of these CD transports in the US and I found this place. Scoll down to where it says "Very special deals", it seem that they have the part CDM 12.1 for $16. Note, I just found this place on google search so I have no idea if they are reliable or not, but I figured if someone was looking for one they might check it out.

that is a good price! If you look on the digital jitter website I mentioned in my docs they list 2-3 US suppliers, which I guess are reputable for them to be listed. I never really looked (not being in the US and all :) ) so no idea of the price they would sell em for.

Ya, that's a GREAT price considering that Global Electronic Supplies has them for $59!

Great job on the instuctions. If only Atari had done such a great job on their service manuals. Non for the Jaguar of couse but the ones they did in later years were pretty limited. Thanks for doing such a great job documenting your work. I have at least 100 dead CDROMs that some day I need to look at.

cheers, thanks. I hope it helps you to resurect those units. Don't forget to try just pulling on the platter (as I have now been informed by several people here). As a common problem is the platter sliding down the spindle and jamming. I'll be updating my docs with this little gem. Could have saved me £22, but end of the day I enjoyed myself :)

Thanks again

I would just like to add the UK Supplier Cricklewood Electronics has put their price up to £22 per unit PLUS £3 P&P PLUS VAT at 17.5% so now the units are in excess of £25 each (Over $37)

The link given for US units seems great till you read they only supply in lots of 100 pcs whilst thats probably an OK number for the big guns it rather leaves the small guy just wanting to have a bash at his one unit - a bit out in the cold!

How about getting a load in T Bird and flogging them on at a modest profit to those that need them in smaller quantities? I would take 3 for starters if you could do them for less than the UK price inclusive of shipping!

Cheers

Yeah, I also have about 15 dead Jag CD units waiting to be fixed. The jammed platter is a common problem from what I've seen, and thankfully an easy fix... but these 15 or so units usually have some sort of motor/laser assembly problem that perhaps could be fixed with a replacement like you describe. Usually the laser will move but the motor won't spin, or the motor will spin but the laser won't move.

Could also be a supplied power problem, maybe a regulator is blown out or something. Difficult to say, and I don't have much time to play with the multimeter these days...

a quick check you could do would be to just unclip the cradle carefully with the loom till attached and make sure the cables are still attached to the lateral motor, or the spindle motor.

I know one I discovered was (gotta write a doc about this too :) )

If when you powe rit up the laser stays near the centre and makes a loud clicking noise and sorta vibrates, weither the door is open or closed, this is probably a dodgy wire on the zero switch.. (sences the laser is at zero position). If a wire has come off, or the switch is damaged, the unit will continually try and send the laser to the zero possition (ie try and push it into the spindle motor). The clicking is the teeth gratting against each other on the rack.

Should be a 5 minute solder job to fix.

I added the link to the guide at dmoz.org in the Jaguar section so the actual guide and the pages that it links to should be a little more prominent in google searches now.

Off topic, I also added a new category for Space War 2000. If anyone wants to look at links to sites about specific Jaguar games check out the following url

http://dmoz.org/Game...guar_64/Titles/

and if anyone has some good links to games that are not represented in that category or any other good Jaguar related links please submit them to that category and I will take care of it.
