It's abundantly clear to me that the Gameline's failure was inevitable. It cost $1 to download a game, which would have been reasonable had there not been a time limit on the game (roughly 8 plays.) Consider that this is half the price if an arcade game, and it's no wonder it failed.

Oh, yes, the Gameline service was doomed at those prices. But the Gameline hardware, the Master Module, is still there waiting to be explored and exploited.

Not that I'm going to hold my breath waiting. I've got too much of an oxygen addiction.

On a related note, I wonder how long it took to transfer a rom?
I remember one side of a c64 floppy taking like 24-48 hrs over a modem depending on connection quality. (& that was, what, 140kb?)

Nice. What condition is it in? And if it's not too much trouble, would you open 'er up and snap some pix of the insides? I'm terribly curious.

I think that Kevin Horton dumped it by disassembling the unit and reading the ROM chip in an EPROM burner.

that sounds a bit beyond my abilities :( I'll take a look at it when I get home to see if it's something I can open without damaging. I'd say it's in solid 'good' condition, no plaque, but the label has a little wear. the case is in good condition and doesn't appear discolored. The thing is huge. Makes a supercharger look weeny. It's missing a small plastic cover over where you put the 9 volt battery (I could have spent like $20 extra for the cover lol.).

Oh! Right, I remember eyeing that one and debating with myself over whether to buy it. "Some day," I told myself. Now I'm even more curious about the gizmo and its innards. Time to shop around.

If I had a used one, this thread would have come to a conclusion long ago, but mine is NIB and there is no way I am opening it.

Why, oh why are you Collectors always taunting us mere mortals with your buried treasures? :)

There is one on eBay right now with a bunch of high quality external pictures of it.
Has a minimum bid of $379. Is that a fair price?

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 130638410131

Did anyone ever find the BINs for the various downloaded games that were offered?

The dumps for Save the Whales and the Gameline itself are both out there. As Godzilla mentioned above, I don't think anything else they had was special.
