I just received Bomberman for Sega Saturn that I purchased on eBay for our 10-up Bomberman championship at the Expo. We already have two multitaps and 10 controllers so we are ready to go!

Sounds great Chuck, I'm a big bomberman fan, and I'm sure 10 player would be crazy!

I just set up a Twitter account for the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. We're just starting, but it will be a great way to keep up on the latest news about the show.

Thanks for the heads up. I will be home in my new house by then (moving back home from Ft. Knox, KY.).

Matt Rau (of Video Masters TV) and I went up to Rick Weis' house a couple of weeks ago to do a short video of his game collection as a lead-in to the Portland Retro Gaming Expo on Sept 20.

Have a look at Rick's awesome collection and see me in an un-awesomely ill-fitting Atari t-shirt. We are clearly not video professionals by any stretch of the imagination, but we had a great time and got to see some rare and interesting gaming goodness.

Roll the clip!

Thanks to Rick for being such a good sport and gracious host!

When will the tournament games be announced? I might make the trip from Boise if there are good ones, maybe I will make the trip anyway.

I am not going to announce all the "possible" games until possibly a couple of days before the show. I may not even announce them then. That way, it is more of an even playing field for everyone at the show. We have often had some really good players turn out for these things. I kind of like to have fun with keeping the games a surprise and let people guess. What I can do is to throw out a couple of hints and the systems that will be in the multi system tourney that I will be running. There will be all types of individual tourneys at the show, but this is the main one that I will be running.

My game choices will depend on turnout. If I have 100 people show up, then I am going to need a good game that will be fun to play as well as multiplayer fun. Typically in the past we have had a blast running 2600 tourneys. Last year, we ran an N64 tournament with a great turnout for being at the very end of the show. Here are the systems that are in the multi-system tourney this year

2600
NES
SNES
N64
Genesis
????? mystery system

I will probably pick a couple of games from each system as "options"

You want a hint? I will give you one game that will be in the tourney. Warlords for the 2600. Practice up, it is going to be awsome!

Also the above may be subject to change if we have setup causalities. Also, I am trying to get the FC twin for space issues to replace the NES and SNES systems.

Just added a new video to the PRGE home page. It's an interview with PRGE's own John Hancock in his palatial classic game room.

Check it out!

That makes sense to keep things fair and I do like Warlords for the VCS. I am leaning towards going as I haven't been to an event like this since CGE 2k1 in Vegas. If I do go, I would be glad to bring an Atari 800 for multiplayer games like Archon if you want to add another system to your tourney. The 8 bit computers always seem to get ignored at events like this so I would be glad to help its profile, I could also bring a 2600 or 7800 as well if you need any.

I agree that the 8-bit stuff gets ignored, maybe next time. Archon takes too long for the type of tourney that we are running. I also have the games already picked out. Thank you though. I hope you come to the show!

As I have never been to one of these Expo's before, I was wondering if there are booths with items for sale or just showing retro gaming items?

There will be games to play, TONS of games and systems to buy, Live Music, and some minor celebrities, as well as some suprises :)

Atari, Sega, Nintendo, Colecovision, Intellivision, and much much more will all be there in full force.

Heck I know of at least one vendor that will even have a Boxed Neo Geo AES system there that I know of.

What makes our show great is the diversity. We have games for the value gamer on a budget. We have games for the ultra collector. We have games for the RPG fan. We have games for the show exclusive collector. We have games for the weird. We have just games to play, and we have just alot of fun packed into on convention. There isnt anything reallly like it anywhere in the Northwest that I know of that packs so much retrogaming goodness in one convention. Spread the word. Tell your friends. It is people such as yourself that make this show fun to do. I welcome your first show and hopefully many more!

Definitely tons for sale. Probably more this year than ever. I have been holding back a ton of rare stuff just for this show.

I think that you and Lord Thag would get along great, as he is one of our vintage computer specialists. I dabble in it, and love MULE as well. I definately would love to have a tourney around Blue Max if I had the choice.

It is all about getting to the big city in that game....

I haven't thought of Blue Max in years, I remember it was a great game and that I crashed an awful lot. This expo sounds like fun and barring any unforeseen circumstances, I think I will make the trip. Does Ground Kontrol serve food as well as drinks, I see there is a pre-show party there Saturday night and it looks like my kind of place, just wondering if I need to eat beforehand. I hope the Star Wars machine is in good condition, I was at Funspot a few months ago and theirs was not well maintained at all.

Ground Kontrol does not serve food, but there are plenty of restaurants in the area including Backspace right around the corner.

I just played the Star Wars machine at Ground Kontrol not 3 days ago. It is in excellent condition as are 95% of the machines there.

We look forward to having you at the show!
