It's very difficult to get a proper objective opinion on how good most Jag games are. I've found that on balance these reviews pretty much match my own opinions on the 7 carts I now own:

http://atarihq.com/r...guar/index.html

Most other reviews are either horribly biased or are really old and ape the graphics and sound. I'm almost considering writing my own (though I don't have many games) from the perspective of a gamer who has dipped into the Jaguar out of curiosity, after owning a Lynx many years ago.

I recently borrowed a few old 1994 Edge magazines from a friend which contain Jag reviews. They gave AvP 4/10, concluding:
"Despite some attractive backgrounds and reasonable srolling, AvP has turned out to be a lumbering, lame and unfocused imitation of Doom that only the most masochistic gamers will get anything out of."

If you honestly take a step back then I'm sure most of you would agree (with the comment, not the score). You almost have to force yourself to enjoy it because it has the best graphics on the platform. I think in some ways this typifies gaming on the Jaguar and the Lynx in general (Hard Drivin' anyone?)

And before you berate Edge - it gave Tempest 2000 9/10 proclaiming it one of the best all-out blasters of all time ;)

T2K is certainly a gem that's worth owning a Jaguar for, but many of the other good games are merely ports. I want something that is truly good, but which is native to the cat - enter Battle Sphere... if only I could get it!

It's hard for me to believe for instance that Defender 2000 was considered worthy of release - it looks, and plays like a PD game on the Amiga.

What are your thoughts on a set of consistent, sensible reviews for AtariAge maybe?

I can't really agree with you. I agree that the Jaguar has more than it's fair share of crap games, and I've never been all that big a fan of AvP anyhow, but the Jaguar has a handful of really unique games that rock!

I totally disagree, I think AvP's game play is top-notch and a LOT deeper than just the shootem' up slugfest of games like Doom (I like those too thought). I loved it then, for gameplay and graphics and I still love it now, for gameplay and graphics. I like the 3 scenerios and completely different styles of play within them, the atmosphere, everything. It was a milestone in gaming then, as far as I'm concerned, and a TOTAL classic today. PERIOD. IMHO.

[b]i dont understand much how people can put down somewhat AVP, i know everyone is entitled to thier own opinions and such, but AVP still is a great game, great graphix, gameplay and sounds, a great piece of work for the Jag...just a shame that werent able to make a part 2 on CD or cart...

For me, the main let down is the respawn of all items after a save, and I guess having seen the PC version before I had a Jag made me appreciate all the things they were trying to do, but couldn't at the time.

Read the words in the review and you can discount it immediately - AvP is not Doom, and if you think so then you'll be disappointed.

AvP was GREAT when it came out and nothing really could touch it - it was a bit sluggish but made up for it in atmosphere - respawing was a bit of a pain but if you think about it those Aliens didnt stop in the movie right :)

I also played most of the game through so the respawn didnt effect me as much - The Predator game was really fun.

Anyhoo, back to my question - should Atari Age host some decent, balanced, and trustworthy reviews?

Oh you had a question :P

Hmmmm..........Maybe a true 'Feedback' mechanism would be better - let the true gamers vote on the game to give a more rounded response?

Kinda like the Amazon rating system?

That sounds like a good idea. Then you get all the different perspectives. I like it.

Back on the AVP note :)

I thought and still do think it's a great game, I have had to change my underwear whilst playing it at night with headphones several times (when you don't notice that alien sneeking up to you). It isn't without flaws (like play as Predator, and for some strange reasons you go into a room and both the Marines and ALiens are stood chatting it would appear until they notice you, then it's a combined effort! :/ )

AVP involved a lot more thinking than doom, probs why edge game it a poo score. Doom is a nobrainer in comparison, and no where near as difficult.

Sorry, but I don't agree. AvP, for the time, was one of the best FPS's out there. It was incredible then and is still fun to play today. IMHO. :)

I haven't played it an awful lot it must be admitted but it stikes me as the sort of game where you need a pencil and a pad of graph paper to stand a chance. The auto map should be a way of getting around this but it keeps resetting itself. That's a big flaw for me...
