I think PT is acting as a deterrent to releasing new titles. The guys who were developing Arachnoids were going to contract ScatoLOGIC to publish their game. Since PT came out they stopped coding to wait and see if piracy runs rampant with the next titles that come out.

T-Bird, I agree with you. As I wrote earlier, I'd love to find out topic's games be released in cart form.

Maybe they should work with PT to ensure new games wont be able to run in the emu......

Sounds like a better solution for the whole community.

I doubt you're going to find BS on the net. The rumors have ran rampant, but I can't imagine anyone who owns BS having it dumped and posting the ROM. Not to mention the fact that T-bird would be T-eeing up on them with a lawsuit..... :)

This is a conercern for me too. I think I may release games on ROM image when they are a couple of years old or so.. maybee not, not decided yet. But I am planning to try and make the operation of any titles I release difficult on an emulator :)

I have plans :)

Uhmm...maybe I missed something, but I just read the whole thread, so...what the H*ll does any of this have to do with Thea Realm Fighters or Varana's Force's?!? That IS the title of the thread...has someone released the roms for them? If so, where can I get info on them? I could care less about PT, but I'd sure like to get these roms on cart or cd, regardless of how incomplete they are, to run on my REAL Jaguar (the only way to go!). I hope someone will bring them out like SW2K, Barkely, or the forthcoming BI/WN.

The problem is that people with code to release are perhaps not doing so because they think Project Tempest will hurt their sales. You can't run a cart on PT, but you can run a BINARY on PT, and you can send a BINARY to anyone in milliseconds via email, etc. Once one person gets a BINARY, will all sales cease?

That's why the thread has changed direction.

I think the whole "emulation hurts development" argument is garbage. I don't believe it for a second:

1) Look at all the DOZENS of new games released or in development for the 2600, the Colecovision, the Vectrex, the 5200, the Intellivision, etc.
If anything, emulation makes it a lot EASIER for developers to test changes and debug.

2) Emulation of these platforms has increased interest in the old platforms. Now instead of colecting dust in basements, these old consoles are valued and cherished - and get played. And as they get played, collectors look forward to and buy new games.

If emulators for the Vectrex (and to a lesser extent the others I mention) hadn't been released, many of today's video game players would never have heard of it. Yet precisely because of emulation, we've seen several new games released for the Vectrex - and more on the way.

Emulation >ROCKS< 8)

I like emulation and emulators in general, but the trouble here is that it takes MUCH less work to develop a 2600, 5200, or Vectrex, etc. game than it does to make a Jaguar game. No offense to anyone, but it is much harder to make something on the Jag.

I suppose one could argue that I could make PONG or Breakout on the Jag easier than on the 2600, etc. But that's not what I meant. I meant a quality title worthy of production.

Now, there's a LOT more 2600 fans out there I believe than Jaguar fans. The 2600 community has a cool method of distribution where the same ROM that is uploaded to Atari Age is produced on limited edition carts that sell for a little money to pay for the materials, etc. and a little profit goes to the designer. There are enough serious 2600 Collectors out there who will buy a cart just to have a boxed cart and manual for the collection, while the binary is freely available and emulatable. A 2600 game might take a month or two of evenings to make. Plus, a lot of unreleased and unfinished 2600 games are still floating around and surfacing, plus the ability to hack an existing 2600 game and make something new or improved out of it is a lot easier on the 2600 architecture.

The Jag would take at least a year of evenings to make an adequate game, and who knows if there are enough serious collectors out there who would pay the higher price (because Jag carts cost about 5x as much as 2600 carts to build) for a cart when they could download and emulate the cart for free. The Jag developer has no monetary incentive to develop a game because he might be stuck with boxes of unsold carts because of emulation... and spending a year of work on something that's just for giving away is probably not something many people would do, so it might not ever happen for the Jag.

So, while your point is true for some platforms, it might hurt the Jag's chances of attracting new developers.
